witness sought in fatal shooting
By Betsy POWELL,
Crime▼
Reporter▼
He wasn't much of a partier, but on Saturday night 36-year-old
Jack LEE headed out with Friends for some karaoke and dancing
at a Bloor St. W. nightspot called the Emerald Restaurant and
Sports Bar.
A lot of fun was had, according to police, and
LEE left the bar
around 2: 20 a.m. with his two Friends, who dropped him off on
LEE
Centre
Dr. near Highway 401 and McCowan Rd.
Around 2: 40 a.m., the divorced father of two called another friend
and was waiting for that friend to arrive outside a condominium
complex on nearby Corporate Rd. when "an unknown person or persons"
approached
LEE and shot him, homicide Det. Peter
CODE said yesterday.
At about 3: 01 a.m.,
LEE's friend arrived to find him bleeding
on the ground. A passerby stopped to assist while the friend
called 911. After police from Scarborough's 41 Division and emergency
personnel arrived,
LEE was taken to Sunnybrook hospital where
he was pronounced dead.
CODE and partner Det. Sgt. Gerry
CASHMAN have no motive to explain
the slaying of the Toronto resident, whose Korean name is Sung
Woo LEE. "
There's nothing to suggest that he did know his assailant,"
CODE said. Police have no descriptions of any vehicle or suspect.
LEE was a self-employed tobacco wholesaler who worked out of
his apartment.
CODE didn't want to say if
LEE lived in the area.
While the slaying occurred in the dark, investigators believe
someone from several surrounding buildings might have seen something.
They are asking witnesses: to come forward.
LEE had no prior involvement with police,
CASHMAN said. He added
that family members are devastated and his mother was scheduled
to arrive in Toronto from Korea yesterday.
Meanwhile, officers in 41 Division continue to probe the non-fatal
shooting of a 40-year-old woman at a doughnut shop on Progress
Ave., also near Highway 401 and McCowan. Police were called to
the Coffee Time outlet within minutes of receiving a call about
LEE who was shot about a kilometre away. The woman had been shot
twice in the shoulder.
"We have no conclusive evidence," other than the closeness of
time and place, that the two incidents are linked,
CODE said.

Man, 36, found on sidewalk was beaten to death
By Betsy POWELL,

Reporter,▲

PARAN spent the final hours of his life in a Midland
Ave. diner before he was severely beaten to death by one or more
people, Toronto police say.
A person walking to work who called police discovered
PARAN's
body at dawn Thursday.
An autopsy yesterday did not conclusively establish the cause
of death, "but there is significant trauma about the body...
consistent with a very severe beating that has been conducted
by one or more individuals," homicide Det. Peter
CODE said yesterday.
CODE said the single Toronto man was 36 years old. "We have spoken
to his family and they described him as slightly mentally challenged."
PARAN was working for a temp agency and had been employed in
a factory that dyes clothing and fabrics.
Homicide detectives want to speak to anyone who was in the Java
Diner at 1570 Midland Ave. in Scarborough Thursday night who
might have seen
PARAN.
CODE didn't say how long he was in the
diner, only that he had been alone at one point.
He also wouldn't say whether other patrons had been interviewed,
or what time
PARAN might have been beaten.
His body was found lying on the sidewalk right up against the
building and close to a doorway,
CODE noted.
PARAN was known to police, but for something very minor and quite
dated, CODE said.
"I don't think his involvement with police has anything to do
with this event."
