Oro woman stabbed to death
University student attacked in Ottawa apartment
By Andrew SEYMOUR,
Saturday,
December 10, 2005
Ottawa A 21-year-old Oro Station woman studying at the University
of Ottawa was stabbed to death after answering the door to her
basement apartment around 5: 30 p.m. Thursday.
Kleigh CUNDALL, who was on the phone with her boyfriend at the
time, put the phone down to go to the door and was attacked by
a knife-wielding assailant.
Hearing her screams over the phone,
CUNDALL's panicked boyfriend
immediately hung up and called 911, said Ottawa police Sgt. Ron
BOS.
CUNDALL's upstairs neighbour, hearing the screams, came down
to see what was happening, only to discover the man still stabbing
her. The neighbour retreated from the scene and dialled 911.
Police officers who raced to the house on Queen Victoria Street
kicked down the front door, guns drawn. Inside the apartment,
they found
CUNDALL who had been stabbed 20 times in the neck,
chest and back and her alleged attacker.
Police said they believed the two knew each other.
CUNDALL, who had no vital signs when paramedics arrived, was
later pronounced dead at the Civic campus of the Ottawa Hospital.
Police arrested Anthony
ROACH, 21, of Barrie at the scene. He
was moved to the same hospital, where he remained yesterday under
police guard.
Police said
ROACH apparently overdosed on Aspirin, and possibly
other drugs, after
CUNDALL was stabbed and before officers arrived
on the scene.
Major crime detectives have yet to lay any charges against
ROACH,
instead waiting until he is released from hospital. He is expected
to recover from the overdose.
CUNDALL was a fourth-year biochemistry student who planned to
attend medical school and become a general practitioner, her
friend Lyndsay
BUEHLER said Thursday night.
She had an amazing future ahead of her, she said.
BUEHLER, a member of the university-based Ottawa Christian Fellowship,
said CUNDALL had been a member of the group for at least three
years.
BUEHLER said
CUNDALL loved curling, which she would teach to
others in the school group of about 30 members.
I knew her as a very friendly person who was quiet, but willing
to talk to whoever was there, she said, stunned by the news.
Neighbours also said they were shocked. A couple who lives across
the street said they would often see
CUNDALL coming and going
to school.
They said she rented the apartment for the past two years.
We knew she was living alone, and we said to her one time, If
you ever need anything, give us a call, said Rick
FINDLAY.
She looked like a real sweetheart, added Ida
FINDLAY.
She was
always quiet
Another neighbour, Miriam
FARBIASZ, arrived home around 8: 30
p.m. and heard the news.
Im just horrified. Shes only been here for a few years now, and
she certainly has been the nicest of neighbours. She was very
quiet, and seemed like a sensible young lady.
CUNDALLs boyfriend, Joshua
FLETCHER, was exiting Highway 417
in Ottawa and talking to her as he made his way through traffic
en route to her apartment when all hell broke loose at the other
end of the line.
He told his father
CUNDALL heard someone at her door and asked
her boyfriend to hang on just a minute while she went to see
who it was.
The next thing he heard was his girlfriends shrieks as her attacker
flailed at her with a knife.
And then he lost the connection.
Now frantic, the man repeatedly hit redial on his cellphone,
hoping CUNDALL would pick up and tell him what was happening.
He called 911 and drove to the apartment, where he found several
police cars.
The only thing that matters to me right now is that we help Joshua
in the grieving process, said his father, Bob
FLETCHER, yesterday.
Kleigh's parents are grieving, everyone is grieving, he said.
Life will never be the same for anyone associated with this.
