LONGERAN, Ernest " Ernie"
Ernest LONGERAN, beloved husband of Katherine LONGERAN (née O'KEEFE) passed away on December 21, 2005 at the age of 78 years after a courageous battle with cancer. He will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by Katherine, his wife of 53 years, his 4 daughters, Patricia LONGERAN, Barbara BYERS, Nancy LONGERAN- LARSH, Jan WATEROUS, his 3 sons-in-law, John LARSH, Jim▼ BYERS and Adam WATEROUS, his 9 grandchildren, Michael, Kathleen and Christopher BYERS, Matthew,▼ Paul▼ and James LARSH, Connor, Riley and Liam WATEROUS and his 2 sisters, Margaret LONGERAN and Gaye MacKINNON. He is predeceased by his parents and infant son. Ernie grew up in Vancouver, British Columbia and moved to Toronto in 1960 with his young family to work with Shell Canada. He retired after approximately 30 years with the company and spent his retirement doing what he liked best - being with family, traveling with Katherine and playing lots of golf. Visitation with family will take place on Wednesday, December 28th between 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. at Morley Bedford Funeral Home, 159 Eglinton Avenue West (2 stoplights west of Yonge Street). Funeral services will be held on Thursday, December 29 at St. Bonaventure Church, 1300 Leslie Street, Don Mills (south of Lawrence Avenue) at 10: 30 a.m. Special thanks to Dr. BRANDWEIN and Dr. ANNA at Princess Margaret Hospital and the palliative care team at Markham-Stouffville Hospital. Pete was a proud Veteran of World War 2. Beloved husband of Audrey GRAY/GREY and the late Winnifred GRAY/GREY (1992.) Lawrence POPE of London passed away at University Hospital after much suffering on Tuesday, August 9, 2005. Age 74 years. Beloved husband of 48 years of Pat (STOCKDALE) POPE and much loved father of Nick. Loving brother of Margaret and Kathleen of Manchester, England and Peter of British Columbia. Loving brother-in-law and uncle. Cremation has taken place. At Larry's request, there will be a short service for family members only at the scattering of his ashes. If desired, donations in his memory to the Alzheimers Society for Lewy Body Research or the charity of choice. Grateful thanks are extended to all concerned with Larry's care at Mt. Though▼ reluctant to leave us so soon, Dr. Thomas George McGHIE peacefully left this earth, leaving behind his loving wife and best friend Dr. Margrieta Edels McGHIE, his children whom he cherished, Loree KAY and her husband Steve; Brad McGHIE and his wife Linda;▼ John▼ Paul▼ McGHIE and his wife Catherine; and Susan BALDWIN and her husband Charles. Grandpa will be lovingly remembered by grandchildren Adam, Rachel, Karly, James, Charlie, Spencer and Simon. Tom will also be sadly missed by the Edels family, and his faithful companion, his dog, Dregs. After 68 Christmas mornings, Tom left us on Christmas Day, twelve days after being diagnosed with cancer. Special thanks to Dr. Janet WILSON, Dr.▼ Albert ANNEN, Dr. Paul MAROTTA, Dr. Cam GHENT, the Palliative Care Teams, the forth floor doctors and staff at London Health Sciences Centre, University Hospital for their professionalism and compassion. Loving, devoted and cherished mother of Joanne Talebian (John PAIVA,) Bill, Judy (Peter DONLON), Mary, Christine (Michael KEARNAN), and Andrew; proud grandmother "Nanny" of Sean TALEBIAN and Anthony PAIVA, Matthew▼ and Tara DONLON, and Travis and Megan GAMMON.
Fondly▼ remembered by her sisters Joan AYRES and Bette ANNESLEY. Life long friend of Eileen and Helen. Dear mother of chosen son Michael ANNETT and sisters-in-law Marge ANNETT of Medicine Hat, Alberta and Doris (Jack) COUPLAND of London. Survived by nieces and nephews Kay CAMPBELL of Alvinston, Shirley DOUGLAS/DOUGLASS and Beverly LEWIS of Petrolia, Wilma BELL of Strathroy, Alma ROBB of Ilderton, Joan ANNETT of Sarnia, Ross ANNETT of Brooks, Alberta, Jeanne ANNETT of Edmonton, Alberta, Robert ANNETT of Petrolia and Bill ANNETT of Wyoming. Also survived by several great nieces and nephews and many close caring Friends. Predeceased▼ by her parents Wellington B. Family and Friends will be received at the Harper Funeral Home, Watford, on Wednesday February 9th from 1 pm until 2 pm when the Funeral Service will be held. Reverend Jo-Anne SYMINGTON officiating with interment at the Alvinston Cemetery. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation would be appreciated by the family. Education of young children was Patricia's main concern and she taught in the Allenby Public School, Toronto for many years. She was Past Matron (Faith) Aloha Chapter, Eastern Star. While she was a very private person, she was generous in helping others. Her rose garden and fish pond were very important to her, especially after ret irement.

With hearts saddened by loss but overflowing with beautiful memories, the family of Doris Jean McNAUGHTON announces her peaceful passing at Saint Thomas Elgin General Hospital on Thursday, March 24, 2005. Born in Belmont, Ontario May 31, 1922, Doris resided near Lawrence Station until 1977 and since then in Saint Thomas. Supportive and loving mother of Ann CARR, Sarnia, and Jeannie (David GALE,) Oakville; proud grandmother of Shauna CARR, Sarnia, Heather CARR, Toronto, and Katie GALE, Oakville. Driver faults U-Haul in death

The Ontario coroner's office is investigating the mechanical fitness of a U-Haul truck after the death of a passenger who was thrown from the vehicle as it flipped over.
Gordon ANNIS, 43, of Peterborough, died last Wednesday while helping his cousin, James MILNE, move from Campbellford, northwest of Belleville.
ANNIS had not been wearing a seatbelt, but MILNE, who was driving the vehicle, and a source close to the investigation told the Star that ANNIS's seatbelt didn't work.
"The police are conducting their investigation with the coroner's office," said Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Brian BLIMKIE.
The coroner will examine the truck tomorrow to determine whether any safety malfunctions contributed to ANNIS's November 30 death.
MILNE, reached last night, told the Star ANNIS's seatbelt didn't work. He said the truck's driveshaft dropped off the vehicle, causing the accident.
"The seatbelt on the passenger side did not operate," said MILNE, "When I picked the truck up first, in Havelock, I went from Havelock to Campbellford. I picked my wife up and little boy, the seatbelt didn't work then. I tried it. I took them into Peterborough, went back to Campbellford, loaded up my truck and that's when it happened."
MILNE said he couldn't return the U-Haul for another vehicle.
"It was the only truck they had," MILNE said. "I just wanted to get my stuff moved out there and get out of there. It never crossed my mind to take the truck back because I was going to try to get the seatbelt to work. It didn't."
MILNE said as he was driving, he heard a loud bang. He believes the driveshaft dropped off the truck.
"It was a bang, like a shotgun bang," said MILNE. "It caused us to veer and I lost it."
A U-Haul spokesperson told The Peterborough Examiner after the accident that the company was awaiting the results of the police investigation and a mechanical inspection of the truck, due to be done this week.
Joanne Fried, based at U-Haul's headquarters in Tucson, Arizona., said U-Haul has had safety issues in the past, but she said they were being dealt with.
"Over the past year we've had more training, more resources available to our locations," Fried told The Examiner. "We've rotated older pieces of equipment out of our rental fleet because we're purchasing new equipment."
It's the first fatality involving a U-Haul in the area since a July Toronto Star investigation revealed half of U-Haul trucks routinely failed Ontario Provincial Police roadside spot checks.
In response to that investigation, the Ontario transportation ministry conducted its own investigation of all truck rental companies, determining that U-Haul had the poorest safety record. That prompted high-level meetings among Ministry of Transportation of Ontario, Ontario Provincial Police and U-Haul executives.
In October, U-Haul promised that it would clean up its act, and begin removing older vehicles from service and more thoroughly checking vehicles before they're rented.
MILNE was on Northumberland Rd. 30 when the accident occurred.
There were three other passengers in the vehicle, including two in the rear with the furniture. None of the others were seriously hurt, said Judy ANNIS, Gordon's mother.
