Stray bullet kills sleeping boy, 8,
Shot fired from apartment above, neighbours say
By Morgan CAMPBELL,
Staff
Reporter
St. Catharines -- An 8-year-old boy is dead after he was shot
while sleeping in his apartment bedroom and neighbours believe
the bullet was fired from a unit directly above him.
Police and paramedics arrived at the low-rise co-op complex around
12: 50 a.m. yesterday and found a bleeding Jordan
SMITH being
cradled by his mother. He was taken to St. Catharines General
hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Niagara police confirmed yesterday afternoon that their investigation
is focused on the
SMITHs' apartment -- on Roehampton Ave. near
Welland Ave. just north of the Queen Elizabeth Way -- and the
one directly above it.
Several neighbours said Jordan and his mother had lived in the
building for about two years. They said a young man living upstairs
was playing with a gun when it went off.
Last night, police said a 29-year-old St. Catharines man is being
sought on a count of criminal negligence causing death.
The shooting is Niagara's 10th homicide of the year.
Vladimir ZGAZAR, who lives next door to the
SMITHs, was getting
ready for bed when he heard what he thought was a gunshot. "We
were looking out the window and we could still hear the echo,"
ZGAZAR said. "It makes me sick. If you want to shoot a gun, why
not take it somewhere else where innocent people won't get hurt?
Why not go to a shooting range?"
Yesterday, people in this 130-unit complex returned to the courtyard
like they do most sunny Saturday mornings. Children played on
a jungle gym while parents sat on benches and talked. One man
erected a small flagpole on a picnic table, then raised a Canadian
flag halfway.
Neighbours said a family of four -- two parents, a teenage girl
and a young man -- live upstairs from the
SMITHs.
ZGAZAR's brother, Patrik
ZGAZAR, whose 10-year-old son was one
of Jordan's playmates, was outside the building minutes before
the police arrived. He didn't know anything was wrong, but he
saw the young man who lived above the
SMITHs run from the complex
with two Friends.
Another neighbour, Liz
AUDETTE, saw the man's three other family
members taken away in cruisers just before 3 a.m.
Lynda ZIMMERMAN, who taught Jordan music and drama in Grades
1 and 2 at Carleton Elementary before she moved to a new school
this year, was shocked at the news, when contacted by the Toronto
Star. She described Jordan as friendly and athletic. "You couldn't
have asked for a nicer kid."
A post-mortem conducted in Hamilton confirmed Jordan died as
the result of gunshot wound to the back.
Police are looking for Brian Stephen
DANIEL, 29, of St. Catharines.

100 years of memories
The area has lost five centenarians in the last few weeks, but
they all left loving legacies.
By Debora VAN
BRENK,
Free
Press
Reporter
Carmela Maria
FARRUGIA never had many material possessions but,
in raising her 10 children, she had all the riches of the world.
By the light of kerosene lamps she would knit, play piano and
cook for her family in Malta. If any young ones fussed, she would
pop a chocolate sweet into their mouths.
She loved chocolate all her life, eldest son Frank says. Eating
it or sharing it, she took equal pleasure from both.
Last week, her family opened boxes of chocolates for those who
paid their respects to the family matriarch at London's Donohue
Funeral Home. "I knew she would do the same," Frank says.
When FARRUGIA died March 6 at the age of 106, she was likely
the oldest person in the region.
In the last 10 days, Southwestern Ontario has lost the collective
wisdom and guidance of five centenarians.
They were born before radio, automobiles and airplanes.
They grew up without electricity, raised families when cars were
a luxury and retired as colour televisions became commonplace.
And they lived long enough to glimpse the future -- animal cloning,
cellphones, climate change -- though their great-grandchildren's
eyes.
Until this month, they were among the 3,795 Canadians to have
lived 100 years or more.
Census data show a Canadian baby born today can expect to live
78 years.
The life expectancy for a Canadian child born in 1898 isn't known
because it wasn't tracked then.
But if U.S. data have any parallel here, consider this: the life
expectancy for an American baby born in 1900 was 46 years.
Here, then, a glimpse into some local lives lived well:
The pace of her last 51 years never quite matched that of Anna
MISHCHENKO's first half-century.
And that was just fine with her, says her youngest son, Tony
MISHCHENKO.
Born in Russia in 1903,
MISHCHENKO survived the horrors of the
First World War.
Then, when the 1917 Russian Revolution turned the country upside-down,
she and her husband were on the "wrong" side; they lived under
assumed names in a new regime with a long memory.
Then came famine. Then the Second World War.
They fled Russia with their three sons and, after a five-year
stopover in Belgium, arrived in Canada in 1951.
"Canada is where they found peace, freedom. But on the other
hand, they were lonely" to be so far from home.
But MISHCHENKO says there was larger purpose in all his mother
did: "All her life was to preserve her family.
"This was her life," he says.
She found comfort in church and in the Bible: The epic film The
10 Commandments was her favourite movie.
And the world stopped whenever the western Bonanza came on television.
"She would say, 'Boy, these guys are just like the (Ukrainian)
Cossacks. They're tough and they're brave.' "
She doted on all the generations that followed hers.
"Her children and grandchildren and great-grandchildren were
her joy."
Carmela FARRUGIA
Francesca DI
FABRIZIO, born in Italy in 1901, was the glue that
kept her family strong.
Sometimes she would tell stories of her childhood, when 20 family
members would live in the same home, daughter Anna
PICCOLI says.
Her three daughters grew up and married and moved to Canada.
They persuaded Francesca and her husband, Filippo -- "the only
man for me," she always said -- to come here in 1968.
Though she couldn't speak much English, she easily made Friends
and earned strangers' respect.
"Nonna," as the children and grandchildren called her, stayed
with her daughters and their families until moving to a nursing
home 15 months ago.
Maria ZIMMERMANN says her grandmother loved to dress up, prayed
for everyone and never failed to stash chocolates in her room
for the grandchildren.
"She had a sparkle in her eye and she exuded love."
Harvey MILLER
Whether teaching young farm kids or volunteering with the Rodney
Kiwanis
Club, where he was a charter member, Harvey
MILLER was
a gentleman and a scholar, says daughter Marilyn
RUMBLE.
"His life was helping people."
MILLER was born on a farm near Rodney in 1902. He taught in a
rural school, then became principal, for two decades, of Rodney
public school.
Rumble recalls how music was always part of their lives --
MILLER
played piano and organ in two churches, starting at age 12 --
and how she once sang at a political nomination meeting for Paul
Martin, Sr.
MILLER "had a real nice way with people," from his Friendship
with Martin to his mediation help with immigrant families, she
recalls.
He was married for more than 70 years to Wilden, who died in
1997, and helped raise three daughters.
RUMBLE planned to sing Promise of Joy at the funeral: "Now we
celebrate his life."
Carmela FARRUGIA
In 1946, Carmela
FARRUGIA's husband, John died, leaving her to
raise 10 children alone. The youngest was six.
But where others might have despaired, she filled their home
in Malta with music, hope and learning, son Frank recalls.
She made sure all her children -- eight remain -- had the chance
to attend private schools.
"She was a very proud woman that she could raise 10 children
without a father," Frank says.
And in 1958, at 60, she left Malta for Canada, where Frank had
found work.
"She loved it here," with the flowers and the space, Frank recalls.
Of the many world changes that took place in her life, airplanes
fascinated
FARRUGIA most.
And even when hip problems forced a move into Marian Villa, she
kept a protective eye on her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren
and great-great-grandchildren.
And always, her faith and family -- and her chocolates -- sustained
her.
"She was a very happy lady," Frank says.
Century Club
Five London-area residents older than 100 have died this month:
- Carmela Maria
FARRUGIA-
SANTANGELO, 106, died March 6 in London.
- Francesca DI
FABRIZIO was 103 when she died in London on March
- Harvey MILLER of Rodney died a week ago, age 102.
- Idella DEMERS, 102, died last Thursday in Wallaceburg.
- Anna MISHCHENKO, 101, died last Monday in London.
