Marion McDONALD
By Rod McDONALD, Wednesday, November 16, 2005, Page A22
Wife, mother, great-grandmother. Born July 11, 1922, in Lochiel, Ontario Died June 16 in Alexandria, Ontario, of kidney failure, aged 82.
Marion was proud of her penmanship even though she never graduated from high school. Because she lived on a farm on the Sixth Concession of Kenyon Township in Glengarry County, just north of Alexandria, Ontario, and there were no buses, she had to board in town. Within weeks, she got homesick for the old homestead, and decided to go back to the country, where she could spoil her pet pig and rooster, and ride the mare bareback.
About five years after that time, when my father Hugh McDONALD was 45 years old, he walked out of the bush and away from his job tending the cattle in a lumber camp in the Ottawa Valley, and guided his horse and buggy for "The Sixth," as the locals called the Sixth Concession, the Scottish settlement where he was born. There, in Gaelic, he asked my grandfather, Rory MacCULLOCH, for his daughter Marion's hand in marriage. Rory answered, "Och yes, Hughie, if she agrees." Only 20 years old, Marion then dedicated the rest of her life to her father's most trusted friend.
Marion and Hughie moved from The Sixth to Alexandria. They never owned a car. They did not go on trips. Their main focus was on their seven children, and all else was secondary. They were deeply religious, and St. Finnan's Cathedral became their second home.
Marion was a "people person." It used to take her an hour to go to the post office, which was just down the street, because she would stop and talk to everybody. She would shake hands with her powerful grip, which she had developed from milking the cows by hand when she was a little girl, and ask a litany of questions before she let a person go. That was her time away from the house, and she made the most of it.
She was also a woman of high spirits, even though she did not drink. Every Saturday morning, she would listen to a radio show called Scots on Parade and she would dance to the jigs and reels as she did her chores. When I was learning to play the fiddle, and could barely scratch out a tune, I would look up and there she was dancing around the kitchen.
Marion was no stranger to hardship. Her sister Sadie was hit by a car and killed instantly on a busy street in Montreal and her brother Vincent drowned in a boating accident while he was working as a forest ranger in northern Ontario. Two of her children died in infancy. I was the eldest child and got to see first-hand the stuff my mother was made of at an early age.
When I was five years old, I lost my sister to a viral infection. The wake was held in the front room, a place reserved for visits from the priest, Gaelic conversations between my father and his cousin Alec, and reciting the beads during Lent.
My sister's coffin was not much larger than a fiddle case, and it was propped gingerly on two pressed back chairs. From my perch on the stairs, I watched my mother, and listened to the soft hum of the prayers being incanted over and over again by the ladies of the Catholic Women's League.
My mother's face was drawn and gaunt, but she kept her pleasant smile throughout the ordeal. She maintained her vigil until all the mourners had passed through, and then she knelt on the hardwood floor and prayed alone, with her head down. When she came out of the room, she waved at me as I crouched on the stairs, as if she had been away on a long journey.
That was the day I got to know my real mother, but it was only after she died that I got to know the meaning of the old saying that the mother's heart is a child's real schoolroom.
Rod is Marion's son.

LINDO, William Joseph " Bill" (1921-2005)
Passed away peacefully at home, Wednesday January 13, 2005, following a lengthy illness. He is survived by his devoted wife Bernice, his loving sister, Margaret McCULLOUGH, and his 7 children, Lorraine HENNESSEY, Eleanore, Elaine, Marion ZAKOS (Kingston), Christine MILCAWICH, Peter, and Marguerite. He was proud and delighted to have 15 grandchildren. Nothing was more important to him than his family. Bill often said his greatest accomplishment was his marriage to Bernice. Through her loving care and unwavering courage, he was able to live out his final months as he so dearly wished, at home, surrounded by those whom he loved, and who loved him most. As a successful entrepreneur, Bill created several manufacturing enterprises involving a wide range of products from the first artificial fire logs in Canada to windshield wiper antifreeze. His flagship company, TML Industries Ltd., the second largest can manufacturing business in Canada, continues as his legacy, operated by his son Peter, and daughters Christine and Marguerite. He also leaves behind his last venture, a fledgling start-up - Dr. Maggie Pet Food Supplements - operated by daughter Elaine. Much of his success was due to the personal integrity and concern for others that he brought to all his business dealings. His longtime business partner, Joe WOMERSLEY remained a lifelong steadfast friend as did countless colleagues, customers and employees. Bill was an exceptional athlete throughout his life. He especially distinguished himself as a senior marathon runner and triathlete, competing for the Canadian National Team in the World Champion Triathlon in 1993 at the age of 72. His stamina and dedication to physical fitness were amazing and inspirational, particularly to those who knew him as a denizen of the Willowdale Fitness Institute where he was a member for over 30 years. All of us who were privileged to know him through business, sports, or on a personal level, were touched by his generosity of spirit, his love of people, animals, nature, music, and his unbounded enthusiasm for life. We will remember him in so many ways for so much that we shared - the illuminating ideas, the smiles, the songs, the moments full of love and hope and striving, the triumphs and failures that made up his meaningful and cherished life. The family welcomes Friends to celebrate Bill LINDO's life at a memorial service to be held at the Scarborough Golf and Country Club, 321 Scarborough Golf Club Rd., (Kingston Rd. east of Markham Rd.) on Sunday, January 16 from 1-4 p.m. In lieu of a formal eulogy, those who wish to, may relate their favorite memories of life with Bill. Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Canadian Cancer Society.

SAUNDERS, Margaret Maude (née McCULLOUGH)
(Dec 14, 1916-Sept 09, 2005)
In her 88th year, Margaret passed away peacefully with her family at her side at the Saanich Peninsula Hospital, Palliative Care Unit, Saanichton, British Columbia on September 9, 2005. She has gone to be with her beloved husband, Victor, who she shared 52 years of her loving life. She will be dearly missed by her son David and his wife Berniece and their children Stacey, Brent and Ashleigh of Salmon Arm, British Columbia, her son Robert and his wife Susan and their sons Christopher and James from Saanichton, British Columbia, and her daughter Beverly and granddaughter Joanne of Chetwyn, British Columbia. She will also be missed by her sister, Joyce SHAW (née McCULLOUGH) and her husband David and their children Bill, Charles and Robert and many other nieces and nephews and extended family members. The family had a wonderful opportunity to share memories with Margaret about her life growing up in Toronto with her parents William and Maude and her brother Bustin and sister Joyce. She met her husband, Victor, on a blind date. He was serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force in Montreal and they were married a short three weeks later. He was sent overseas and was captured in Germany after being shot down. They shared their love through letters for four years before being reunited in 1945. Their life together was spent in Toronto, Oshawa, Falkland, and Vernon. Margaret was a very loving and caring person and donated her time in helping many organizations. Margaret volunteered her services with the Canadian Red Cross during the Second World War, when Vic was a P.W. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the Canadian Red Cross would be appreciated. There will be a memorial service for Margaret, on Monday September 12, 2005 at 2 p.m. at the First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 4725 Falaise Drive, Victoria, British Columbia.
