Marion McDONALD
By Rod McDONALD,
Wednesday,
November 16, 2005, Page A22
Wife, mother, great-grandmother. Born July 11, 1922, in Lochiel,
Ontario Died June 16 in Alexandria, Ontario, of kidney failure,
aged 82.
Marion was proud of her penmanship even though she never graduated
from high school. Because she lived on a farm on the Sixth Concession
of Kenyon Township in Glengarry County, just north of Alexandria,
Ontario, and there were no buses, she had to board in town. Within
weeks, she got homesick for the old homestead, and decided to
go back to the country, where she could spoil her pet pig and
rooster, and ride the mare bareback.
About five years after that time, when my father Hugh
McDONALD
was 45 years old, he walked out of the bush and away from his
job tending the cattle in a lumber camp in the Ottawa Valley,
and guided his horse and buggy for "The Sixth," as the locals
called the Sixth Concession, the Scottish settlement where he
was born. There, in Gaelic, he asked my grandfather, Rory
MacCULLOCH,
for his daughter Marion's hand in marriage. Rory answered, "Och
yes, Hughie, if she agrees." Only 20 years old, Marion then dedicated
the rest of her life to her father's most trusted friend.
Marion and Hughie moved from The Sixth to Alexandria. They never
owned a car. They did not go on trips. Their main focus was on
their seven children, and all else was secondary. They were deeply
religious, and St. Finnan's Cathedral became their second home.
Marion was a "people person." It used to take her an hour to
go to the post office, which was just down the street, because
she would stop and talk to everybody. She would shake hands with
her powerful grip, which she had developed from milking the cows
by hand when she was a little girl, and ask a litany of questions
before she let a person go. That was her time away from the house,
and she made the most of it.
She was also a woman of high spirits, even though she did not
drink. Every Saturday morning, she would listen to a radio show
called Scots on Parade and she would dance to the jigs and reels
as she did her chores. When I was learning to play the fiddle,
and could barely scratch out a tune, I would look up and there
she was dancing around the kitchen.
Marion was no stranger to hardship. Her sister Sadie was hit
by a car and killed instantly on a busy street in Montreal and
her brother Vincent drowned in a boating accident while he was
working as a forest ranger in northern Ontario. Two of her children
died in infancy. I was the eldest child and got to see first-hand
the stuff my mother was made of at an early age.
When I was five years old, I lost my sister to a viral infection.
The wake was held in the front room, a place reserved for visits
from the priest, Gaelic conversations between my father and his
cousin Alec, and reciting the beads during Lent.
My sister's coffin was not much larger than a fiddle case, and
it was propped gingerly on two pressed back chairs. From my perch
on the stairs, I watched my mother, and listened to the soft
hum of the prayers being incanted over and over again by the
ladies of the Catholic Women's League.
My mother's face was drawn and gaunt, but she kept her pleasant
smile throughout the ordeal. She maintained her vigil until all
the mourners had passed through, and then she knelt on the hardwood
floor and prayed alone, with her head down. When she came out
of the room, she waved at me as I crouched on the stairs, as
if she had been away on a long journey.
That was the day I got to know my real mother, but it was only
after she died that I got to know the meaning of the old saying
that the mother's heart is a child's real schoolroom.
Rod is Marion's son.

has gone to be with her beloved husband, Victor, who she shared

opportunity to share memories with Margaret about her life growing
up in Toronto with her parents William and Maude and her brother
Bustin and sister Joyce. She met her husband, Victor, on a blind
date. He was serving in the Royal Canadian Air Force in Montreal
and they were married a short three weeks later. He was sent
overseas and was captured in Germany after being shot down. They
shared their love through letters for four years before being
reunited in 1945. Their life together was spent in Toronto, Oshawa,
Falkland, and Vernon. Margaret was a very loving and caring person
and donated her time in helping many organizations. Margaret
