McLARTY,

In loving memory of our dear son and brother Ryan
McLARTY, who
passed away two years ago, March 18, 2003.
You'll always be with us Ryan, for you never really left
You just went on a journey ahead of the rest.
You walk with us in sunlight,
You're in our dreams at night.
You never really left us Ryan,
You just went out of sight.
Your laughter rings within our ears,
Our eyes still see your smile
You never really left us Ryan,
You just stopped to rest awhile.
For those who really love you and think of you today.
You never really left us Ryan
You're in our hearts to stay.
Always loved and never forgotten, Mom, Dad and Jennifer.

MOWAT,

The children of James Rodman ('Rod')
MOWAT would like to advise
longtime Friends of his death, on Tuesday, April 12, 2005 in
Santiago, Chile. Dad died peacefully, with his devoted wife of
25 years, Graciela Poblete
DE_LA_CERDA ('Piti') by his side.
He leaves his children - Anne, (Susan
RISK,) of Regina, Saskatchewan
Becky, of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island; David, (Lina),
of Ottawa, Ontario; Vicki, (Claude
LEGER,) of North Bay, Ontario
and Kati, of Ottawa, Ontario. He is also survived by his many
grandchildren: Norah, Natalie, and James
PENDERGAST in Charlottetown
Austin, Bridget, and Cameron
MOWAT in Ottawa; Alexandre and Eric
LEGER in North Bay. He also leaves his sister, Nancy
McLATCHIE

SNOWDEN
(Ken) also of
Skead,
Ontario; nephews, Stuart
McLATCHIE (Jo-Anne) of Sidney,
British Columbia; and John
McLATCHIE
(Barbara

Dad was predeceased by his first wife, Marjorie Esther
EVANS,
of Fredericton, New Brunswick; and their daughter, Norah Patricia
('Patti'). He is also survived by his second wife, Mary Kathryn
(WALSH,) of Ottawa, with whom he lived for many years. Dad was
a strong and compelling man, whose sense of personal destiny
was matched by a dry sense of humour and determination to live
on his own terms. A mining consultant for many years, he joined
the United Nations Development Program in 1968 to assess and
develop base metal mining operations, primarily in Chile and
Colombia. Eventually, he decided to retire to Chile, where he
had fallen in love with Piti, and the spectacular beauty of the
country itself. Until recent years, when his health began to
fail, he and Piti travelled home to Canada often, visiting Friends
and family. Born January 13, 1925 in Campbellton, New Brunswick,
to Isabel Annie ('Nan'
WETMORE) and Earl Porter
MOWAT, he earned
a B.Sc. in Geology from the University of New Brunswick, and
later became a Professional Engineer in the province of Ontario.
Dad felt he was a self-made man of the old school, driven to
achieve in his career. In this, he succeeded. In many ways, Dad
was a paradox: he called himself a 'citizen of the world' - anticipating
the global village long before the internet. But he was pulled
back to his roots in the Maritimes often to enjoy lobster feasts
by the sea with his Canadian family and Friends. An intense and
challenging man, he could be charismatic, charming, witty, and
stimulating. He loved to engage others in deep conversations
about politics, business, and history in two languages. Although
he spent most of his life far from his children in Canada, he
nonetheless exerted a powerful influence on us. A memorial celebration
of the life of Rod
MOWAT will take place in his beloved New Brunswick,
however, the date has not yet been set. Friends and family may
contact Becky by Email at mowat@eastlink.ca, or by telephone
at (902) 569-9120, if you are interested in receiving an invitation
to this gathering. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate
donations made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada,
2360 - 2nd Avenue, Regina, Saskatchewan S4R 1A6, (306) 569-8433,
in memory of James Rodman
MOWAT.

I Remember -- Red
HORNER
By Rob MacLAUCHLAN,
Monday,
May 9, 2005, Page S6
Rob MacLAUCHLAN of Toronto writes about Red
HORNER, whose obituary
appeared on April 29.
At the height of the Depression in the winter of 1935, three
young boys from Stanhope on the north shore of Prince Edward
Island decided to write a letter to their favourite Toronto Maple
Leafs player, Red
HORNER.
The theme of the letter was that the boys, who all lived on a
small dairy farm where they shared one pair of skates among 11
children, believed "they had the stuff to make it to the National
Hockey
League." My father Leslie
MacLAUCHLAN (11,) my uncle Harry
(9) and Mervyn
ROBINSON (9) were convinced that the only thing
standing in their way was a lack of hockey equipment and they
had come to the conclusion that there must be plenty of it lying
around Maple Leaf Gardens. If Red would just toss it into a box,
they'd sure put it to good use.
Much to their dismay, the box never arrived. Years later, I had
become good Friends with Stewart
GAVIN, who played for the Leafs
from 1980 to 1985. Through him I was able to track down Mr.
HORNER,
who learned about the three boys from Stanhope. A few weeks later,
a signed photograph of Mr.
HORNER was delivered by Stew. Included
on the photograph was the note: "Les: Sorry, the stuff must have
got lost in the mail. Yours truly, Red
HORNER."
That framed photograph hangs proudly in my parent's home, validation
that Red at least believed they had the "stuff" to make it to
the National Hockey League.

Safety urged after fatality
A West Elgin farmer is killed while working alone with a tractor's
power takeoff.
By Patrick
MALONEY, Free Press Reporter, Wed., November 9, 2005
On the farm he had called home all his life, Paul
BINKS fell
victim to an accident that is "all too common" among farmers.
BINKS, 46, grew up on the Kintyre Line farm in West Elgin where
he was killed Monday night when his clothing became wrapped in
a tractor's power takeoff, which redirects power from the tractor's
engine to run other implements via a dangerous spinning shaft
attached to the rear of the machine.
The power takeoff shaft -- which was powering a post-hole auger
BINKS was using -- can spin at 1,000 revolutions a minute and
poses a serious danger to farmers, a national safety expert said
yesterday.
"It's way too common an occurrence," said Marcel Hacault, executive
director of the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association.
"Look at disabled farmers -- often their disability was the result
of an encounter with a power takeoff shaft.
"Anything that's hanging around can easily be caught up in it."
A longtime horse aficionado,
BINKS was building a corral for
his newest animal when the accident happened after 3 p.m. at
the Rodney-area farm. He was working alone and it wasn't until
8 p.m. that a relative found him, Elgin Ontario Provincial Police
Const. Dennis
HARWOOD said.
A love of horses was a constant in the life of
BINKS, a shy,
quiet man, his grieving family recalled.
"He had an interest in horses (since) being a small boy," said
Ken BINKS, his brother. "He raced horses all over -- here in
London, Dresden. Never anything big, but it was big to him. He
enjoyed it."
During the 1990s, 1,086 people were killed while working on Canadian
farms, according to the Canadian Agricultural Injury Surveillance
Program.
One month ago today, Patrick
MacLAUGHLIN, a 19-year-old from
Langton, was killed after falling into a corn-filled silo at
a Woodstock-area farm.
According to Free Press files, the last area farm death involving
a power takeoff happened in Perth County in August 2002.
To Hacault, power takeoff safety should be a top priority on
farms.
"This is dangerous," he said. "You hate preaching to farmers,
but maintain your guard shafts."
Not all power takeoffs are outfitted with guards. It wasn't known
whether BINKS's power takeoff had a guard on it.

Police hunt shooter after woman killed
By Tracy McLAUGHLIN,
Saturday,
October 15, 2005
April Lynn
DOBSON believed in living for today.
“She was the most happy-go-lucky person you would ever want to
meet,” said
DOBSON's roommate Kelly
KING. “She always said, ‘Life
is too short, enjoy it while you can.' I can't for the life of
me think of why anyone in this world would want to hurt her.&rdquo
DOBSON was shot to death early Friday on the front porch of a
Browning Trail home.
Neighbours were jarred awake by the sound of a gunshot at about
12: 30 a.m. and seconds later found
DOBSON, 40, of Barrie, on
her back, bleeding to death.
Police are looking for a male, 15 to 18 years old who was seen
by one witness racing from the scene on a brown mountain bike.
“He is a person of serious interest,” said Barrie Police Sgt.
Dave GOODBRAND as he stood on the street, which was blocked off
with yellow tape while police officers climbed on rooftops and
combed the area for clues.
“We do believe this was not a random shooting and the public
is not in danger,” he said.
A witness, who asked not to be named, said he saw the teen get
off of his bike, cut across the yard to where the woman was.
“Then I heard a gunshot and I saw him get on his bike and take
off,” he said.
Police say they don't know if the teen was the shooter or a witness
to the shooting. One neighbour who tried to revive the woman
said he jolted out of bed when he heard the shot. “We wanted
to keep her alive, but her eyes were wide open. She had that
dead look and we gave up.&rdquo
DOBSON worked as a waitress, but was off with a knee injury.
“She loved to be the life of the party -- she would tell the
same old jokes,” said
KING with a gentle laugh.
“This just doesn't make sense.&rdquo

For the next 61 years Ken

his family, and his Friends, his courage, leadership, and his
love. We are all lucky he survived. Peacefully and with his family
by his side, at North York General Hospital, on October 11, 2005.
Kenneth Charles
ANDREWS, loving husband of Mildred (née

for 59 years. Predeceased by daughter Nancy, stepbrother John,
and stepsister Irene. Proud father of Laura, Bruce, Gord, and
Steve. Father-in-law to Eileen and Jen. Grandfather to Lindsay,
Mark, Emily, Kevin, Brian, Helen, and Monica. Born September
4, 1925 in Toronto, Ken
ANDREWS was the only
son of Charles and
Agnes ANDREWS. He was a student at Danforth Technical School
prior to altering his birth certificate so he could enlist in
the army militia in May 1941 and be transferred to active service
in March 1942. Ken enlisted with the Queen's York Rangers, and
was transferred to the Royal Regiment of Canada after going overseas
in September of 1942. With the Royals, he was stationed in South
England. Ken, or Andy to his many Friends in the Regiment, landed
in Normandy after D-Day and advanced from the Caen area to the
Seine area. Once asked if he had any close calls during the war,
Ken noted "in a combat area, an infantry man has close calls
every hour and day. One memorable event, however, was being bombed
by our own air force outside Falaise in mid-August 1944." Ken
was severely wounded on the left arm and right leg on August
28, 1944 while on duty near Elbeuf on the Seine. Military service
earned him the 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defense
Medal, The Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with Clasp, and the
War Medal 1939-45. After the war Ken rejoined the Canadian Army
(reserve) and eventually rose to the rank of Regimental Sergeant-Major
with his beloved Royal Regiment. In 2001 he had the honour of
representing the Regiment at the 55th Anniversary celebration
of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy Campaign. In civilian life
Ken had a career with the Toronto Assessment Department, and
later the Provincial Assessment Department, and was the Commissioner
for York Region. He later became Chief Administrative Officer
and Secretary to the Ontario Municipal Board. He built a wonderful
life for his family, with a home in North York and a cottage
in the Kawarthas. He will never be forgotten. A private service
is being held for family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be
made to The Hospital for Sick Children.
