Also survived by sister-in-law Marie HILL, of Harriston. Predeceased by husband Ezra HUEHN and a brother Herbert HILL. Treasured "grammy" to Marcie and husband Matthew TENK, Tillsonburg, Erin and husband Justin CHUTE, London, and Christopher McCALLUM and friend Heather RICKARD of Lyons. Born in Springfield on April 30, 1925 to the late Earl and Mary (GLENN) BAGNALL. Predeceased by her sister Kay (Bruce) MATTHEWS (March 2, 2005,) her brothers-in-law Clarence BRUCE (1982) and Gordon MATTHEWS (1997,) sister-in-law Marie PEARSON (2002) and nephew Kevin PEARSON (2000.) She lived all of her life in the Springfield area and was an active community supporter. She was a former telephone operator and school teacher. Member for over 50 years of Carnation Chapter #135, Springfield and McDonald Chapter #167, Tillsonburg, Order of the Eastern Star; Charter member of the Springfield Lioness Club (1981); former member of the Springfield Women's Institute and long time leader of Springfield 4-H homemaking clubs. She was the caterer for over 30 years at the Springfield Lions Club Hall, long time Springfield news correspondent for the Aylmer Express, and an Avon Representative for over 25 years. She was a member of Saint John's United Church, Springfield. Special thanks to the Red Cross home care workers, Care Partner nursing staff as well as the doctors, nurses and staff at Tillsonburg District Memorial Hospital for their excellent care. Mary Elsbeth “Betty” McCALLUM, died at her beloved home on Sunday, May 15, 2005. She was born in Mont Louis, Quebec on The Gaspe Coast. She was the daughter of the late Jane “Jen” Huntington GIRARD and John Douglas McCALLUM. Betty leaves her sister Marian MOUNTAIN (Alan) and her brothers Douglas (Frances) and Evert (Vera). Betty was the proud aunt to 11 nieces and nephews and 16 grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister Phyllis MORIN (1964) and brother-in-law Larry MORIN, sister Shirley (1932) and brothers Lewis (1933) and Lowell (1934). Betty was also predeceased by her long time friend and nursing buddy Patricia Ann BINNS. She▼ cherished her “family of Friends”. Those Friends will know who they are. Marion Katharine YOUNG (STEVENSON.) Born April 16, 1922, in London, England, Kay died peacefully on July 13, 2005, under the good care of the staff of Victoria Hospital, London, Ontario. A sensitive, civil and gentle woman, she was ever loving and caring as wife to her late husband Gordon Alexander, as mother to Donald Gordon YOUNG, Robert Andrew YOUNG and William Alexander YOUNG, as grandmother to Alicia, Duncan and Troy, and as mother-in-law to Louise GADBOIS and Mary YOUNG. She is survived as well by her beloved sister Ruth Clare LODGE and her husband Arthur and by her brother William Denman STEVENSON and his wife Mildred, along with her relatives sister-in-law Dorothy Jean ANTROBUS, nieces and nephews Kathryn, David and Steven LODGE, Cathy McCALLUM and Robert STEVENSON, and Drew ANTROBUS, together with their spouses and children. Kay was a wise and competent home-maker, and a warm and welcoming hostess. She was raised in relative comfort in the Niagara escarpment area by her mother Agnes Macdonald STEVENSON (CARPENTER,) who was a graduate of the Ontario Agricultural College at Guelph, and her father William Oliver STEVENSON, a surgeon. She survived meningitis and rheumatic fever as an adolescent but was left with a damaged heart. Kay and her future husband Gordon met as teenagers, and after an appropriate courtship, they married in September 1944. Kay moved with Gordon's career, which focused on polyester textiles, first with C.I.L. and later with Celanese Canada. As mother to three busy boys, she cared for the family homes in Toronto, Kingston, Hamilton and Montreal with diligence and creativity. After Gordon's retirement in 1978, Kay and Gord settled in Kingston and passed idyllic summers with family and many Friends at their beloved cottage on Bob's Lake, near Westport, Ontario. Kay's old-Ontario culinary mastery, including her signature sweet red pepper sauce, was enjoyed by dozens of visitors from across Canada and around the world. She enjoyed nature, games and reading, and followed the lives of her family and many Friends with much interest and affection. Kay endured two open heart surgeries, first in 1965, and again in 1981 to insert a mechanical heart valve. The valve, which was designed to operate for some ten years, was still functioning at the end of her long, rich and productive life. Relatives and Friends are invited to a memorial service for Kay, to be held in Kingston, Ontario, during the autumn of 2005. Details will be announced. WILLARD, her brothers and sisters Isaiah, Ruth, Sarah, John, Thomas, George, William and Albert. Also predeceased by her parents Ruth and John James McCHESNEY. A long time resident of Windsor, Ontario, passed away peacefully at University Hospital in London, on September 1st, 2005, surrounded by the love of his family at 89 years of age. Devoted husband of Margery Ethel DANTER of London with whom he celebrated 57 years of marriage. He will be missed and lovingly remembered by his children Dr. Wayne DANTER and wife Deborah DANTER (nee SCRAGG), Pastor Brian and wife Lynn DANTER (née ROGERS), David and wife Diane DANTER (née DIAVOLITSIS.) Loved grandfather of Matthew, Benjamin, and Patrick, Brianne, Brittany, Bethany, Judah, Brooklyn, Olivia, Jonathan, Robert and Anastasia. Mr. Robert DANTER will be fondly remembered by sister-in-laws Florence PENNINGTON of Windsor, and Jean McINTOSH of London. Robert was born on April 17, 1916, in Windsor, Ontario, to the late Robert H. DANTER and Elizabeth DANTER. He was predeceased by brothers Gordon and Edward DANTER. Robert was a painter and decorator by trade, and he was also an accomplished fine artist. The role of which he was most proud was that of loving and committed husband, and caring and involved father and grandfather. 78, Truro, passed away peacefully on January 12, 2005, at home, surrounded by family. Born in Halifax, Yvonne was the daughter of the late Earl and Mabel (DICKSON/DIXON) MALLOY. Yvonne graduated from the Halifax Children's Hospital School of Nursing in 1946. Following graduation, Yvonne worked with the Dalhousie Public Health Clinic in tuberculosis research and also served as a private duty nurse for paediatric and adult patients. Yvonne was a dedicated Reach to Recovery Volunteer, Canadian Cancer Society, for over 25 years. Yvonne was a member of First United Church, Truro, a United Church Women member and assisted with the youth choir in the 1970's. A gracious, selfless and compassionate woman, Yvonne devoted herself to her family and her community. Researcher and teacher born on April 7, 1858, at Belmont, Canada West (Ont.).
Both a biochemist and a physiologist, he was an important player in early scientific medicine in Canada. In 1908, he organized and then ran the department of biochemistry at the University of Toronto. In 1916, he became chairman of a committee that oversaw the formation of the National Research Council and then went to Montreal as professor of Biochemistry at McGill University. As a researcher, he developed the theory that body fluids are living proof that humans evolved in an ocean environment. He died in London, Ontario

Doctor born in Toronto in 1909.
After attending the University of Toronto Schools, he studied medicine at the University of Toronto, where his father was a professor of ophthalmology. He left Canada in 1934 to continue his research into virology at the London Hospital in England. Later, he taught virology at Oxford University, retiring in the mid-70s to go back to research, at which time he switched his attention from animal to insect virology. His greatest achievement was to identify the hepatitis-B virus. During his long medical career, he performed innovative work on poliomyelitis and herpes simplex viruses. He also helped found the World Health Organization after the Second World War, and lectured and travelled extensively on its behalf. Although he spent most of his life in England, he was always known as "the Canadian doctor," probably because he never acquired a British accent.

BIRD, John Irvine, Q.C.
Age 87, died very peacefully at home September 17, 2005 surrounded by his family.
John was born September 23, 1917 in Wimbledon, England and completed his high school education at Shawnigan Lake School and commerce degree at University of British Columbia and studied law at Dalhousie University. He played rugby for the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds and was honoured to be invited to play fullback with the British Columbia All Stars against the New Zealand All Blacks in 1935. When World War 2 broke out he enlisted with the Canadian Navy on loan to the British Navy where he achieved the rank of lieutenant. He served on the destroyers "Wolverine", "Trinidad" and "Argonaut".
After the war he returned to Vancouver with his family and articled in law. He practised maritime law with J.V. Clyne at Campney Owen Murphy and Owen. He and the Hon. Walter Owen were founding partners of Owen Bird. John was a pre-eminent counsel in maritime law, was appointed Queen's Counsel and on many occasions appeared before the Supreme Court of Canada. He served as Chair of Maritime Law of the Canadian Bar Association, Vice-President of the Canadian Maritime Law Association, President of the Plimsoll Club and was appointed to the Vancouver Police Commission.
Predeceased by his parents, Eva and Chief Justice Henry BIRD, his brother William and sister Eve (HOCKIN.) Survived and dearly missed by his wife of 62 years, Molly BIRD (née McCALLUM,) sons Michael BIRD (Carolyn) and Brian BIRD (Lora) and daughter Barbara KLOPFENSTEIN (Albrecht,) grandchildren Shelley DESBRISAY, Blake KLOPFENSTEIN, Hallie and Devon BIRD.
Memorial Service to be held on Friday, September 23rd at 2: 00 p.m. at Saint Mary's (Kerrisdale) Anglican Church, 2490 West 37th Avenue, Vancouver with a reception to follow at the Vancouver Lawn Tennis Club - 1630 West 15th Ave., Vancouver. Age 96, born April 1, 1908. Our beloved mother, grandmother, greatgrandmother and aunt, left us all for a better place on New Year's Eve Day, 2005. She stayed loving and young at heart to the very end, blowing kisses and bidding "love you." She deserved so much more than what life gave her in the end. Our "Nany" leaves us saddened at her passing, but happy at the same time, for now she will be reunited with her deceased husband Kenneth and child Peggy, her best Friends, long ago gone, her parents, brothers, and so many more who loved her and left her in her lifetime. She will see, speak, and hear clearly for the first time in years, enjoy the birds singing, and the love and warmth of Heaven's glow. Passed from this life on January 22, 2005, at home, with her family by her side. Born Catherine McCALLUM in 1951 in Guelph, she was to become the heart of a family of three sons Jordan, Jesse and Adam, husband Garnet, and her doggies Dudley and Elmo. She was the beloved sister of Margaret (Paul) MARCHESSEAU, and special Auntie to Genevieve and Keenan, Paul, Patrick and Simonne. We were so fortunate to have Catherine cared for by Dr. BLACKSTEIN and his wonderful team at Mount Sinai, and by Dr. WARD and Dr. LEE locally. Together they gave us eight precious years. Family and Friends are invited to share in the memories of Catherine's life, and the mysteries of all life, during visitation with her family at the Edward R. She was the daughter of the late Jane "Jen" Huntington GIRARD and John Douglas McCALLUM. Betty▲ leaves her sister Marian MOUNTAIN (Alan) and her brothers Douglas (Frances) and Evert (Vera). Betty was the proud aunt to 11 nieces and nephews and 16 grand nieces and nephews. She▲ was predeceased by her sister Phyllis MORIN (1964) and brother-in-law Larry MORIN, sister Shirley (1932) and brothers Lewis (1933) and Lowell (1934). Betty was also predeceased by her long time friend and nursing buddy Patricia Ann BINNS. She▲ cherished her "family of Friends". Those Friends will know who they are. World War II Air Force Veteran
The family announces with sadness the passing of Gordon on December 16th, 2005 at the Welland County Hospital, in his 86th year. Gordon was the loving husband of Gertrude (FUCHS) for 63 years. Gordon was born on March 21, 1920 to parents Glover and Ella (McCALLUM) BOYD in Toronto, Ontario. He will be greatly missed by his son Steven (Jun) of Mississauga and daughter Linda QUIBELL (Brian) of Deep River. He was a beloved grandfather of Andrew (Amanda) and Geoffrey QUIBELL and a loving great-grandfather of Bruce, Story, Jack and Niyah QUIBELL. Fondly remembered by brother Norman (Margaret), nephews Bill, Douglas, Robert, Scott Boyd and nieces Anita DIAMOND (Jeff,) Mary-Anne and Sharon BOYD. Predeceased were brothers John (Marjorie), Harold (Bert), Howard (Chris) and sister Irene ANTHONY (Doug.) During his service with the Royal Air Force from 1937 to 1945, Gordon was stationed at aerodromes in Britain, on the aircraft carrier Illustrious of the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm, in air force squadrons in the North African desert war and later with Coastal Command in Britain. Gordon later transferred to the Royal Canadian Air Force. Gordon was employed for 34 years by Union Carbide in Lindsay and Welland. In 1978 Gordon represented Union Carbide at a ceremonial Investiture conducted by Her Honour the Lieutenant Governor, Pauline McGibbon, to receive the Priory Vote of Thanks for valuable assistance rendered in the furtherance of the work of the Saint John Ambulance. He was an ardent golfer, boater and a past Master of the Masonic Lodge. During retirement he researched family genealogy with his brother Norman in Canada, U.S.A., Ireland and Scotland. In his 60's, he undertook an extensive walk across Newfoundland, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec and Ontario. Gordon and Trudy enjoyed travelling to many countries with Friends and relatives in far-off locations. A private family service was held in the Chapel at the H.L. Cudney Funeral Home, Welland. Gordon was cremated and his ashes interred at Pleasantview Memorial Gardens, Thorold, Ontario.
