I Remember -- Red HORNER

Gordon WINCH of Toronto writes about Red HORNER, whose obituary appeared on April 29.
One Toronto summer in the Thirties, our hired man (Ken BOOTHBY, whose son David became a Toronto Police chief) took my brother and I to a pick-up ball game in Keswick, Ontario I think Ken was one of the players. Red HORNER, who was helping his uncle on a nearby farm, played short stop. I cannot remember much about the game except being awestruck at actually seeing a Maple Leaf hockey player. We listened to hockey every Saturday night on the radio.
What I do remember about that pick-up game is the exceptional play of Red HORNER. At short stop, he was responsible for the three outs almost every inning. He was so fast that he seemed to always be the first to catch or stop the hit and throw or tag out the batter. I think he was the only National Hockey League player I ever saw up close and in action.

GOSTICK, Ronald (July 18, 1918-July 16, 2005)
Died peacefully in Centre Grey General Hospital, Markdale. Ronald was born in Wales while his parents were serving in the First World War. Following the war, they returned to Canada to settle near Stettler, Alberta. After nine years on the homestead, the family, now including a brother, William, left the farm and moved to Calgary where, in 1932, Ron's Mother represented a city riding in Alberta's first Social Credit Government. Ron completed high school and college in Calgary, and later completed a business course in Chicago. He married Jeanette WINDSOR, in 1941, and joined the army weeks later. He was stationed in Ottawa and Toronto, serving as a court reporter. At the end of the war, Ron was the national Secretary of the Social Credit Party, and subsequently left that position to start his own newspaper, and lecturing business, which he continued for fifty-five years. Early years of this period were spent in Walter's Falls, with a move to Flesherton in 1952. He was the author of several booklets and was well known internationally for his

Class 1 Firefighter with Leaside and East York for 33 Years. Suddenly, after a valiant struggle at Ross Memorial Hospital, Lindsay, on Saturday, August 20, 2005. Barry MUIR, in his 65th year, was the beloved husband of Carole MUIR of Fenelon Falls. Dear father of Sheri ALLEN of Bethany, Steve and his wife Laura of Oshawa, Stacy MUIR and her husband Glenn BATEMAN of Stouffville. Loving grandfather of Ben, Drew, James, Joshua, Megan, and Ryan. son of Madeline MUIR of Brampton and the late Murray MUIR. Brother of Sue and John VORSTADT of Brampton and uncle of Wayne, Christine and her husband Dennis WINDSOR, and great-unlce of Amy. MURPHY, Margaret Ishbel (née MacDONALD)
Passed away peacefully at her home on September 20, 2005. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughters Sheena MURPHY (Geoff BOVETT) and Deirdre MURPHY (Ron MEHMEL.) Left to cherish her memory are her brother Lewis MacDONALD (Agnes,) sisters Jeri WINDSOR, Mairi CHALMERS (Bill) and her nieces and nephews. We would like to express our heart felt thanks to the MURPHY and MacDONALD families, and to all of Mum's Friends who have touched her life and have provided compassion and support to all of us, recently and over the years. Special thanks to the Scarborough Palliative Interdisciplinary Network team and all those involved in her care. Cremation has taken place and at Mum's request there will be no formal service. A gathering in celebration of her life will be held at the house on Sunday, September 25th, 2-7 p.m. Flowers are graciously declined. Passed away on October 10, 2005 with her devoted husband Stan at her side. June was born in Scarborough on June 23, 1922 to Rebecca and Horace WINDSOR. She married Stan on October 12, 1957. June was a 43 year employee of Christie Biscuits. June leaves to mourn her husband Stan, sisters Eve (Lloyd), Edna, Lorraine, Norma (Bruce), sister-in-law Stella, many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews. Iain, age 29, passed away on Thursday, November 10, 2005 as a result of a motor vehicle collision. Iain's name meant "God's magnificent gift" and that he truly was - a gift to us all. In his short life Iain touched many lives through his spirit, enthusiasm for life, his smile and cheerful laughter. He was a great man who helped anyone in need no matter what the situation. Iain was the loving husband of Julia, proud, devoted and loving father of McKaila. Dear son of Myra and Ron.
