Boy drowns on jungle tour

A Niagara falls boy with London family ties drowned on a family vacation in the Dominican Republic last week after being pulled underwater by a strong current during a countryside tour. Adam VITATERNA, 11, died after jumping off a small waterfall last Wednesday while on a countryside tour with two siblings and his parents, who looked on in horror.
The family had been vacationing at a resort in Puerto Plata.
VITATERNA, whose funeral is today, has maternal grandparents and other relatives in London.
Krista WALL, who was on the tour with the family and about 10 other people, jumped in the water to try to save VITATERNA, coming achingly close.
"I touched him, but I wasn't able to pull him up," said the Waterloo-area woman.
A doctor in the group performed cardio-pulmonary resuscitation, but couldn't revive the boy.
"We had to carry his body through the jungle back to where the vans were and call the ambulance," said WALL.
The safari tour last Wednesday gave tourists a chance to see the countryside and concluded with the waterfalls.
Tourists held onto a rope as they waded through the water to jump off a series of ledges. It looked safe enough, but Andrew VITATERNA, the boy's father, later discovered it had recently rained, making the currents more powerful.
He said he watched helplessly as his son, who was a strong swimmer, was pulled under the waist-high water.
He screamed at the tour guides to help, but they seemed to be arguing among themselves.
It took nearly an hour before the boy's body was taken to a hospital. It was too late.
"It felt like hours," VITATERNA said.
He and his wife are still looking for answers and warning tourists about the perils of vacationing in Third World countries.
"We worry about whether we go to a three-star resort or a four-star, a five-star," he said. "Little do we know what's outside the walls of the resort. You're playing with fire."
Almost as terrible as the boy's death was the fact that the next day the tour operator, Allegria S.A. Tours, was booking children on the same tour, said WALL.
"They said it was safe for the children and not to worry," she said.
Allegria S.A. Tours could not be reached for comment.
WALL returned to Canada on the same flight as the family Monday.
She said she didn't know them before the vacation, but they have since become close.
In his death notice, VITATERNA was described as a cherished young boy who loved soccer, hockey and his guinea pig Sammie.
"He had an adventurous spirit, a loving soul and he touched the hearts of all he met. God now has a new angel in heaven," the notice said.

In her 94th year, peacefully passed away at Huronview Nursing Home on December 26, 2005. Daughter of the late Ida and William RITCHIE, she was the loving wife of the late Ivan PAPERNICK and loving mother to Larry (Susan FRIEST) and unconditionally to her first born Frances. Jean also touched the lives of her close family members, which include: Her sisters, Elsie (predeceased Robert IRWIN,) Daisy (predeceased Elmer WALL) and Violet (Jim SMITH;) Her brothers, predeceased Harvey RITCHIE (Betty) and predeceased Eldon RITCHIE (Madeline;) and granddaughter Simone PAPERNICK. She will be missed by her many nieces, nephews and Friends. Jean practiced as a Registered Nurse until she met her husband, at which time they opened a ladies store in Goderich - the Fashion Shoppe. Jean was a passionate nurse and fervently committed to taking care of her family and Friends all her life. She was an avid duplicate bridge player, enjoyed her golf outings and was very active in the church and other charitable organizations. Jean was unconditionally devoted to her mentally challenged daughter Frances. The special bond between them will live on forever. Jean will be fondly remembered by her very caring nature, kindness and strength of character that allowed her to overcome many obstacles with grace and dignity. Janet died of heart failure on Monday, December 12, 2005 in the company of her husband, Michael WALL. She▲ had suffered from Parkinson's Disease and spinal damage for some years. Born in Niagara Falls, she was the daughter of the late Wilfrid Brenton KERR and the late Ada Sarah Melvina BRETT. She was pre-deceased by her brother James. She leaves her sister Catherine THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON, her two nephews, Michael and Gabriel, and me and my daughter Imogen who had become, in effect, an adopted daughter. We are all heart-broken at our loss. Educated at Havergal College; Trinity College, University of Toronto; and the University of Rochester she decided, despite having offers from at least two universities, on a career as a high school teacher. This she commenced in Oakville, Ontario and in 1972 came to Ottawa to take up the position as head of the Social Sciences Department at Lisgar Collegiate Institute. She remained as head of an ever expanding department until her retirement in 1995. She was an active Progressive Conser vative since her days at Trinity, she was a former president of both federal and provincial Progressive Conservative riding associations and served on the board of the Ottawa West-Nepean Conservatives until her death. An historian, she was the author of two books, 'Sharing a Continent' on Canadian-U.S. relations and 'Search for a Nation' on English-French relations in Canada since 1759. She had just completed work on a third edition of 'Search for a Nation', which will be published by Fitzhenry and Whiteside in the spring. Her funeral will be held at Christ Church Cathedral, Sparks Street, Ottawa at 11: 00 a.m. on Friday, December 23. The service will be preceded by a gathering at the Cathedral at 10: 00 a.m. at which photographs and other memorabilia will be displayed and followed by a reception, also at the Cathedral. Her cremated remains will be interred in the family plot in Seaforth, following a memorial service in Rosemount next spring. Passed away peacefully on September 5, 2005. Beloved wife of the late John. Loving mother and mother-in-law of Jack and Bonnie, Ted, Lenny and Rena, Sharon, Penny and Lorrie GEFFEN. Cherished grandmother of Dara, Alyssa, Samantha, John, Sara and Jessie. Survived by her sister Bella WALL. Of Franzfeldt, Banat, Hungary/Yugoslavia Passed away peacefully and in caring hands at Carefree Lodge in Toronto. Predeceased by her husband Johann, daughter Katarina HATZENBICHLER and son Johann. Barbara is survived by her loving daughter Barbara SCHOENEMANN (Alexander) of Boeblingen, Germany and son Adolf (Marilyn) of Bobcaygeon, Ontario. She will be fondly remembered by grandchildren: Manfred and Edmund SCHOENEMANN; Erwin and Willibald HATZENBICHLER Anneliese WALL; David and Brian NOTTA and great-grandchildren. The family will receive Friends at the Humphrey Funeral Home - A.W. Miles Chapel, 1403 Bayview Avenue (south of Eglinton Avenue East), from 10-11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 12th with the funeral service to follow in the chapel at eleven o'clock. Dear mother of Eileen KINGDON of Sutton, Eleanor JOHNSTON of Drayton Valley, Alberta, and Linda WALL and her husband Thomas of Breton, Alberta. Predeceased by her son-in-law Roy KINGDON. WALL, Dr. Anne-Marie (1964-2005)
It is with profound sadness, we announce the passing of Anne-Marie WALL, 41, of Toronto and formerly of Riverview. Her death comes following a brief illness on Thursday, December 8, 2005, in Toronto. Born in Saint John's, Newfoundland, she was the daughter of the late Terence and Thelma (SULLIVAN) WALL of Pouch Cove, Newfoundland. Anne-Marie was an Associate Professor of Psychology at York University in Toronto. She leaves to mourn her husband Ian SWAYZE of Toronto, her mother-in-law and father-in-law Sandra and Allan SWAYZE of Toronto, brothers-in-law Christopher and Sean SWAYZE, her adoring adopted family, Jim and Marnie WALL of Riverview, Blair WALL of Toronto, and Andrea WALL of Sackville, her much loved siblings Jennifer HISCOCK (Bill) of Ottawa, Terry WALL (Julie) of Riverview, and Stephen WALL (Jennifer) of Toronto. She also leaves to mourn two nieces Ashley and Nicole, and her loving aunts, uncles, and cousins. Anne-Marie was a friend to all who knew her. The family will be receiving relatives and Friends at the Riverview Funeral Home, Pine Glen Rd., Riverview, New Brunswick on Monday, December 12, 2005, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Prayer Vigil and sharing of memories will be held at the Funeral Home, Monday evening at 8: 30 p.m. The Funeral Service will be held at Riverview Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 13, 2005 at 10: 00 a.m. with Fr. Jeff Doucette officiating. A Memorial Mass will also be held on Tuesday, December 13, 2005, at 10: 30 a.m. at Saint Agnes Roman Catholic Church in Pouch Cove, Newfoundland.
