'Fearless' educator mourned
Beloved principal drowned diving in Stoney Lake
Wanted students to 'take on life with dignity'

Students loved Althea RHOOMS.
The long-time teacher and principal had an infectious laugh and was always ready with a hug at the end of each school day.
She was also the whip-smart businesswoman who made sure students' education wasn't compromised by funding cuts, and fought tirelessly to improve her schools.
Always up for a good challenge, Rhooms was a woman described by best friend Sharon ALLEYNE as "strong, fearless."
"She could be strict in some ways, but there was always love for the students and lots of hugs," said Mike TIMOTHEOU, father of one of her students.
RHOOMS, who loved the outdoors, rowed Saturday in the Toronto International Dragon Boat Race Festival, competing on the Toronto District School Board team.
The next day, she participated in a practice dive at Stoney Lake near Peterborough with her scuba diving club. She had been diving almost weekly for a year, Friends and family said.
But on Sunday, she began having breathing problems under water and never made it up. She was 43.
The coroner's office is still probing what caused her death.
RHOOMS worked as a teacher before serving as vice-principal at McMurrich Junior Public School for two years, and then principal at Humewood Community School for three years.
She transferred to Maple Leaf Public School this past December, following her passion to the Jane St. and Lawrence Ave. neighbourhood where 65 per cent of her students have African or Caribbean backgrounds.
"She wanted them to grow up and take on life with dignity," said ALLEYNE.
RHOOMS volunteered for Women for P.A.C.E. (Project for Advancement of Childhood Education), a group promoting early childhood education in both Canada and her native Jamaica.
"She wanted to be a leader in the African Canadian community," said Trustee Josh MATLOW. "(At Maple Leaf) she found a place in the world to be a leader and provide mentorship to young students."
Principal Rita GARRY, who took RHOOMS's place at Humewood, said she took the assignment at the new school because "there were a lot of students from the black community there. She wanted to be a role model for the female students."
Flags were flying at half-mast and grief counsellors had been brought in at her former schools.
At a graduation ceremony at Maple Leaf yesterday, students spent what should have been a day of celebration, memorializing a lost friend.
RHOOMS leaves her parents, younger brothers Wayne and Jason, and her 18-year-old son, Gyasi. Funeral arrangements are still being made.

Peacefully passed away Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at Providence Health Centre, Toronto. Joe was an inspiration to so many people throughout his life. He was our hero. He was our best friend and he was someone who led by example. Sadly missed by his wife Janet (PERKINS) and sons, Terry and Helen (Calgary,) John TIMOTHY (Toronto), Steven (Toronto), Christopher (Chicago) and daughters, Dianne and Bruno BENEDETTI (Mississauga) and Wendy KANE (Toronto.) Proud grandfather of David BENEDETTI (Mississauga), Lisa ALLANA (Markham,) Kiah and Sage KANE (Calgary.) As a respected member of the judicial and legal communities, Joe was admired for his sense of integrity and honesty. In 1978, after a 23-year career as lawyer and Queen's Counsel, Joe was appointed a County Court Judge in the City of Toronto. At the age of 49, Joe was one of the youngest judges ever appointed and he served on the bench until 1997 as a Superior Court Judge. While law ruled most of his working days, his true passion was hockey. His contributions to the sport in Canada and internationally were far reaching - from coaching house league and the University of Toronto Varsity Blues, then President of the Central Pro League, Director with Hockey Canada and eventually Arbitrator with the National Hockey League. Joe loved being in a rink and around young people. While he experienced so many rewarding moments in hockey, his greatest thrill was being able to coach his four sons when they were young. There was no prouder parent in the arena 7 nights a week! Words which best describe Joe are - loyal friend and kind soul. He used to say, "a person's wealth is not measured by the amount of money in his bank account but rather, the number of Friends he acquires throughout his life." Suddenly at St. Joseph's Health Centre in Toronto, Thursday morning, August 11, 2005. Bill SHOULDICE of Christie Beach, Meaford at the age of 62. Loved husband of Diane TIMPERLEY. Loving father of Melissa, Jonathon and Darren. Loving eldest son of W.B. (Bev) and Dorothy SHOULDICE of Shallow Lake. Dear brother of Rob and his wife, June, of Shallow Lake, Beth and her husband, Paul FARROLL, of Orangeville, Doug and his wife, Kathy, of Owen Sound, Joan and her husband, John LEVER, of Shelburne and Dale and her husband, Eric ROBINSON, of Wiarton. Lovingly remembered by his eighteen nephews and nieces and his mother-in-law Christel WRIGHT of Toronto. TIMPSON, Shirley
After a long illness, Shirley passed away into peace at the Country Lane Nursing Home, Chatsworth, on Tuesday, May 31, 2005, at the age of 65. Shirley is survived by her children Natalie, Valerie, Andrea, Lori-Anne, Vicki, and Steve. She will be missed by her grandchildren Donovan, Crystal, Darlene, Aaron, and Walker. Dear sister of Mona (Max), Lillian (Gerry), Ken (Carol), Jane, Dennis, and the late Mary-Ann, and Miles. Predeceased by her parents Henry and Jacoba LOTSBERG. A special thank you to the nurses and staff of Country Lane Nursing Home.
