Fifty-five years ago, 350 members of the 2nd Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery, were en route to Fort Lewis, Washington., and thence to the Korean War when their troop train collided with an eastbound passenger express near Canoe River, British Columbia Twelve soldiers were killed instantly, four died aboard the rescue train, and one died in hospital. They were Arden ATCHISON (Loon Lake, Saskatchewan.), Weldon BARKHOUSE (Wolfville, Nova Scotia), Norman CARROLL (Pennant, Saskatchewan.), Frederick CONWAY (Grand Falls, Newfoundland.), Robert CRAIG (Foam Lake, Saskatchewan.), Austin GEORGE (Eight Island Lake, Newfoundland.), Urbain LÉVESQUE (Ottawa), Robert MANLEY (Niagara Falls, Ontario), Basil McKEOWN (Moscow, Ontario), Albert ORR (Calgary), David OWENS (Granby, Quebec), Leslie SNOW (Saint John's), Albert STROUD (Howley, Newfoundland.), Joseph THISTLE (Conception Bay, Newfoundland.), James WENKERT (Cowansville, Quebec), James WHITE/WHYTE (Placentia Bay, Newfoundland.) and William WRIGHT (Neepawa, Manitoba.) Jean McEWAN, wife of Bob, mother of John and Jessica, and daughter-in-law of Lois, died at her home on Grosvenor Street on the 31st of August. Jean grew up in Elma Township as the much loved daughter of Archie WHITE/WHYTE and Hildred STRUTHERS. Their farm was isolated and Jean had few playmates, and this may explain her deeply intuitive understanding of the rhythms of nature. She was a quietly cerebral woman, equally at home editing John's history papers, playing fiddle music with Jessica, or planning flower gardens with Bob. She leaves behind her older brother Murray and his wife Elizabeth, many Friends, and the McEwan in-laws: Lou and John CULL, Loiey (and the late Ken) MOIR, and Terry and Linda McEWAN. There will be no visitation or funeral. Jean will be buried in the Saint Marys cemetery by her family where she will rest among the Hearn ancestors near her father-in-law Gordon, and where she will wait gently for her Robert. She also graduated with a B.Sc.N. from Western University in 1956 and taught secondary school for the Waterloo School Board and at the College of Education in Toronto. June was an pilot, teacher and a nurse plus serving as minister at the Britten Memorial Church of Canada since 1995. She earned her pilots license with the "99's Women's Pilots Organization." June is survived by many close Friends and members of her church. How lucky we are to have known her and to have come in contact with her wise teachings and wonderful humour. She will truly be missed. Friends may visit at the T.
