I Remember -- Leo
STERNBACH
By Jan DROBOT,
Saturday,
October 8, 2005, Page S9
Jan DROBOT, a former vice-president of Westinghouse International,
writes about Leo
STERNBACH, whose obituary appeared on October
Leo STERNBACH was the
son of a pharmacist in my hometown of Krakow,
Poland. I first met him in the 1920s through my older brother,
who knew him because they were both interested in the same girl.
In 1963, I moved to New York and found my old friend's name in
all the papers: he had become famous as the inventor of Librium,
and its younger sister, Valium.
I contacted his company, Hoffman LaRoche, and we renewed our
Friendship, which lasted until his death. On my many visits to
his New Jersey home, I saw the 14-karat gold molecular model
of Librium that Roche gave him when he officially retired. Leo,
who held more than 200 patents, did not like to be called a genius.
He insisted it was all luck. He claims he accidentally synthesized
Librium when he was "housekeeping," or testing compounds before
dumping them.
Roche, however, was convinced and kept him on as a chemist emeritus
well into his 90s. The company stills owns his creations. That's
because Roche saved Leo's life. In 1941, he was working for the
company in Switzerland. With the Germans massing on all sides,
Roche sent their Jewish employees to its American branch. Their
loyalty -- which they thought was just sound business practice
was returned by his loyalty. Not that Roche ever let him want
for anything. He had a wonderful life with his beautiful wife
Herta and their family, and went peacefully, leaving the world
a better place.
