HARTEN, Kathleen
Peacefully on Friday, October 21, 2005, at William Osler Health Centre, Etobicoke. Kathleen was born in England, April 24, 1915 and was a long time resident of Kipling Acres, where she was much loved, and admired for her kind and cheerful disposition. Kathy was sent to Canada, as an orphan, by the British Government, with a boatload of young children in 1930, to work as a mother's helper. She soon after joined the family of the late Edna and Roy TASH, as a nanny for their daughters Norma (McFADDEN/ PEARCE) and Bette (BARRETT/ ESCH.) Kathy lived with them in Montreal and Toronto for 50 years, becoming a treasured member of the family, and a 'second mother' to the girls. She was a beloved grandmother figure to their children: Doug, Dave, Wayne McFADDEN, Marilyn STERN, and Bruce, Larry and Scott BARRETT. A dear great-grandmother of twelve. Although Kathy never married, she met the 'love of her life', the late Ernie SNODDEN at Kipling Acres. Many thanks to the staff, Friends and volunteers on the 4th floor who so ably cared for her. If desired, donations to Kipling Acres would be appreciated. Cremation has taken place. Private interment in the McFadden-Barrett family plot, Park Lawn Cemetery.

I Remember -- Leo STERNBACH
By Jan DROBOT, Saturday, October 8, 2005, Page S9
Jan DROBOT, a former vice-president of Westinghouse International, writes about Leo STERNBACH, whose obituary appeared on October Leo STERNBACH was the son of a pharmacist in my hometown of Krakow, Poland. I first met him in the 1920s through my older brother, who knew him because they were both interested in the same girl. In 1963, I moved to New York and found my old friend's name in all the papers: he had become famous as the inventor of Librium, and its younger sister, Valium.
I contacted his company, Hoffman LaRoche, and we renewed our Friendship, which lasted until his death. On my many visits to his New Jersey home, I saw the 14-karat gold molecular model of Librium that Roche gave him when he officially retired. Leo, who held more than 200 patents, did not like to be called a genius. He insisted it was all luck. He claims he accidentally synthesized Librium when he was "housekeeping," or testing compounds before dumping them.
Roche, however, was convinced and kept him on as a chemist emeritus well into his 90s. The company stills owns his creations. That's because Roche saved Leo's life. In 1941, he was working for the company in Switzerland. With the Germans massing on all sides, Roche sent their Jewish employees to its American branch. Their loyalty -- which they thought was just sound business practice was returned by his loyalty. Not that Roche ever let him want for anything. He had a wonderful life with his beautiful wife Herta and their family, and went peacefully, leaving the world a better place.
