STEINKOPF, Helen Katz (1918-2005)
Helen STEINKOPF passed away suddenly at her home in Winnipeg on Monday, May 23, 2005 at the age of 86 years.
Beloved mother to Marilyn, Justine, Aliza, Max, Jocelyn and Winifred. Grandmother to 16 and great grandmother to 6.
Born and raised in Chicago, she practiced nursing before moving to Winnipeg in 1947 when she married Maitland STEINKOPF. It had been a whirlwind courtship. A devoted wife and mother, she was a tireless leader in efforts to better the lives of others, especially intellectually handicapped children and adults. The establishment of group homes in everyday communities was her greatest passion. As part of her commitment, she was instrumental in the founding of the Manitoba Marathon. It has raised millions of dollars for group homes since its inception in 1979.
Helen was a determined and relentless campaigner for the causes she championed. There were many. She touched the lives of numerous people and acted as a voice for many unable to speak for themselves. In later years, she focused on Continuity Care to help families plan a safer and more secure future for relatives with a disability - a cause she was working on at the time of her death.
Helen had a great love for nature in all its wonderful glory. She spent many a summer in Riding Mountain National Park conferring with the naturalists and riding the endless miles of trails on her faithful horses Captain and Patchy. Most people did not know that Helen was just as comfortable sleeping outside in a snow quinzee as she was in her own bed. She loved the Manitoba winter. She loved being active.
Helen was an avid traveler. Three days before she died she returned from a trip to Europe where she had been joined by three of her children and one grandchild. Throughout her life she explored most continents and countless countries.
An iconoclast - her counsel, pioneering spirit, sense of purpose, inspiration and integrity will be profoundly missed.
Donations in Helen's memory can be made to Continuity Care, Endowment Fund Capital Campaign, 2-120 Maryland Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3G 1L1.

DIAMOND, Marc (May 2, 1944-November 17, 2005)
Teacher, theatre director, playright, novelist, opera librettist, Marc DIAMOND died suddenly at his home in Vancouver, aged 61. Born in Hornell, New York, he came to Canada with his family in 1954. His father, Dr. Ralph DIAMOND, his mother Mary (nee LEFF) and brother Michael, are now deceased. He received his doctorate in Drama from the University of Toronto in 1979, and came to British Columbia in 1980, where for 25 years he taught in the theatre area of the School for the Contemporary Arts at Simon Fraser University. He is survived by his beloved partner and colleague of 27 years, Penelope STELLA, with whom he taught in the School, and by his countless students and Friends for whom he was a constant support and inspiration. An open, generous and encouraging mentor, patient and demanding by turns, with a subversive sense of humour, Marc DIAMOND has, along with his partner, had a transformative effect on the development of theatre in Canada. The hundreds of students who have gone on to act, direct, write and develop new companies form his enduring legacy. Marc DIAMOND was enthusiastically committed to the idea of interdisciplinary and collaborative projects, and regularly formed substantial creative alliances with musicians, composers, dancers, artists and film-makers. His remarkable sensitivity to the nuances of disparate art forms became an endless, surprising pleasure for the creative artists with whom he worked. From librettos for contemporary opera and musical theatre, through experimental novels to classical Greek dramas re-cast as contemporary political theatre, he brought to life his heartfelt commitment to the progressive possibilities of these art forms. The inquisitive and judicious audiophile, the uncannily discerning listener these animated his enduring love of music, especially jazz. Wide-ranging visits to the galleries of New York, his favourite city, fed a remarkable aesthetic sensitivity. The range of interests and curiosities pursued throughout his life were returned to the arts - his driving pleasure. Once a competitive swimmer, over the last several years Marc DIAMOND became an accomplished sea-kayaker. On vacation at his favorite place on the big island of Hawaii he could be seen at dawn, setting out alone into the Pacific. Thus we will remember him. The magnitude of his loss will be hard to calculate the math has not yet been invented. There will be a public viewing this Friday, November 25, from 7 to 9 p.m., and a funeral service on Saturday, November 26, at 1 p.m., at the Mount Pleasant Universal Funeral Home, 306 E. 11th Avenue, in Vancouver. In lieu of flowers or other donations, a contribution to the Marc Diamond Fund may be made through Simon Fraser University. Mount Pleasant Universal Funeral Home (604) 876-2161
