STEEVES,
David▼ -- Dispatch
By Katie ROOK,
Saturday,
February 12, 2005 - Page M4
David STEEVES, known as the Cat Doctor, was esteemed by clients
and colleagues for his knack with the animals. Even the most
skittish kitties seemed to calm in his presence.
Dr. STEEVES, 36, would often take a seriously ill cat home so
he could provide around-the-clock care.
If he had to leave an ailing animal at his Davenport Road feline
veterinary clinic, he was known to return at 3 a.m. to check
up on it.
It was Dr.
STEEVES's childhood cat, Tippy, that inspired him
to get into animal medicine.
Dr. STEEVES and his partner of 16 years, Malcolm
GILMOUR, had
three cats, including a hairless named Rogaine after the hair-loss
remedy, or Rogue for short.
Dr. STEEVES worked with Annex Cat Rescue to find homes for stray
cats. He offered a discount on fees for less well-to-do clients
and would sometimes help to relocate cats when owners could no
longer care for them.
A graduate of the Ontario Veterinary College in Guelph, Dr.
STEEVES
was just 25 when he took over the Cat Doctor, a pre-existing
practice. Later, he returned to school part-time and earned his
M.B.A. from the Rotman School of Management at the University
of Toronto.
Diabetic felines were of particular interest to Dr.
STEEVES.
He advocated proper diet for cats with diabetes. Healthy eating
for both animals and humans was important to Dr.
STEEVES, who
was an excellent cook, Mr.
GILMOUR said.
Dr. STEEVES's cancer -- non-Hodgkin's lymphoma -- came on quickly
and he expected to recover, going so far as to move the Cat Doctor
to a new location on Belmont Street three months ago.
When it became apparent that he would no longer be able to practise,
he closed the clinic permanently on December 31, but continued
to work on files until two days before his death on January 8.
