TURNER, Frances Catherine (née CROUGH)
Our most blessed and beautiful Mother, Frances Catherine TURNER (née CROUGH) lovingly surrounded by her children, returned to Heaven on November 16th, 2005 after a brief illness. Teacher, Mother and "Nana" extraordinaire, Frances was born in 1924 and raised in Ennismore near Peterborough and was one of nine siblings born to Clara and Frank CROUGH. She attended a one-room schoolhouse (which she got to by horse and buggy) and it was here that she decided to devote her entire life to teaching. Frances began her teaching career in South Porcupine and eventually came to London where she taught at Saint Mary's, St. Roberts, Holy Family and eventually retiring in 1993 at her beloved Pius X School with Doug McCARTHY as Principal. Our Mother was instrumental in integrating challenged children into regular classrooms and she felt it was her biggest professional accomplishment. She was also the last person in Canada to teach for a full fifty years for the Separate School Board and literally changed the lives of thousands of students. She will be lovingly missed, treasured and remembered always by her children Shaun, Paul, Dan, Chris, Kelly and Tim as well as her four granddaughters, Sonya (Germany), Keara (Nova Scotia), Olivia (Toronto) and Emily Frances Catherine (Calgary). Predeceased by her husband of forty years, Patrick Joseph TURNER. Will be sadly missed by her sister Marlene SINDALL of Hamilton and brother Bill CROUGH of Peterborough, as well as Sister-in-Law Monica LAMBERT of Hamilton, Brother and Sister-in-law Leo and Helena TURNER of Saint Mary's and dozens of nieces and nephews who adored her! We would like to especially thank nurse Sarah RENOUF and the nurses and doctors in the Critical Care Trauma Centre at Victoria Hospital for doing God's work here on earth. If you knew and loved Frances TURNER or knew any of her children, please come and honour us with your presence in a celebration of Fran's Life! Funeral Mass will be held at St. Patrick's Catholic Church, 377 Oakland at Dundas on Monday, November 21st, at 7 p.m. with reception to follow downstairs. In lieu of flowers, Hug A Teacher. God Bless our Mom!

Nico Michel " Nick" VAN GELDER
By Ivan VARGA, Friday, December 16, 2005, Page A24
Husband, grandfather, scientist, teacher, humanist. Born December 24, 1933, in Padang Sidempuan, Indonesia. Died September 19 in Kingston of cardiac arrest, aged 71.
No matter whether the conversation turned to the brain's functioning, the correct way to perform a Wagner opera, the merits or deficiencies of a novel, current political affairs or the proper way to train dogs, Nico expressed his strong opinions with a great sense of humour. One could agree or disagree with him, but would never be bored. As his son Steve said at the memorial gathering of family and Friends, "He was always right but he was a good listener."
Nico was the son of a high-ranking Dutch colonial administrator. He enjoyed a rich and privileged childhood, in a home filled with books. After the Japanese occupied the Dutch East Indies (today Indonesia) during the Second World War, he was interned, despite being very young, in a concentration camp, where he spent five gruelling years.
He often referred to that experience, which taught him to overcome difficult situations. In spite of deprivations and humiliations, these years were decisive in forming his indomitable spirit and deep concern for the well-being of the underprivileged.
After the liberation of Indonesia, the VAN GELDER family returned to the Netherlands, but soon emigrated to Canada and settled in Montreal.
Nico was admitted to McGill University and received his PhD in biochemistry in 1959. That year also marked his marriage to Louise SINGER, whom he met in 1954.
Subsequently the couple moved to Cambridge, England, where Nico received his post-doctoral fellowship, followed by the same at Harvard University's medical school, finishing in 1962. Over the next five years, Nico carried out research at Tufts University's medical school in Boston.
In 1967, he returned to Canada and joined the department of physiology of the University of Montreal, where he became a full professor in 1973 and remained until his retirement in 1997.
Nico was active in research, teaching and health promotion, especially in Latin America. For his accomplishments he was awarded several distinctions in Japan, Italy and the Netherlands, and received the Order of Andres Bello of Venezuela.
In Venezuela, he worked with the poor and devised a nutritional regime for expectant and breastfeeding women. He promoted the use of locally available, cheap foods, such as pineapples, that contained the necessary nutrients for the healthy development of the brain. He gained the trust and admiration of the local population, to the extent that children who were involved in his studies called themselves Niños de Nico (Nico's children).
Nico was the author or co-author of three books and 87 articles in scientific journals and a member of the editorial boards of many international journals, as well as an appointed expert of the United Nations and the World Health Organization.
After his retirement, Nico joined the department of chemistry at Queen's University as an adjunct professor, studying neurochemistry and improving nutrition for children in developing countries. His fatal heart attack struck him when he wanted to drive home after yet another day in the laboratory.
Nico and Louise have three children, Stephen, Terry and Gregory, and two grandchildren, Kailie and Maxime. He is missed by family, Friends, colleagues and students, as well as by Coal and Biff, his dogs.
Ivan is Nick's friend.
