She was the much-loved wife of Dr. William "Bill" SEDGEWICK. Jean was an inspirational mohter to her children Margaret, James, Elizabeth and Jane and a wise and loving grandmother to Scott and Luke. Her parents, Harold James and Margaret Laura SHORTREED and her sister Marion Shortreed DRIVER predeceased her. Jean had a unique artistic flair, exhibited in her gardens, floral designs, paintings, skating carnival productions and style of living. Her family and many Friends will miss her humour, optimism and strength. She always served her community with energy and dedication. She was an honorary lifetime member of the Woodstock Figure Skating Club and the Woodstock Art Gallery. She was a member of the Wingate Raiders chapter of the Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire Jean was the recipient of numberous awards including the province of Ontario Premier's Bicentennial Medal for Service to the Community, the Ministry of Citizenship Volunteer Service Award, and the 1988 Olympic Share the Flame Volunteer Award. She was an inductee into the Woodstock Sports Hall of Fame. The family thanks Dr. Jeffery NICHOLLS for his Friendship and for the special care that he gave to Jean. She was predeceased by her parents Samuel DOLE and Louisa DOLE (née KAISER,) sisters Delphine and Dorothy and her beloved husband Judge Edward McLeod SHORTT. She leaves behind three devoted children; Samuel (Maria), James and Janet. She will be dearly missed by two grand_sons, Michael and Charles, her sister-in-law Mary and friend Barbara WEST.
Born and raised in Toronto, Willa was a graduate of the University of Toronto in Honours English and History and of the College of Education. She taught a Harbord Collegiate in Toronto and during the Second War was employed by the British Admiralty in Ottawa. She and her family relocated to London, Ontario where she taught at Sir. Adam Beck and London South Collegiates. She was a longtime member of the May Court Club in London and the Canadian Society of Painters in Watercolour with whom she exhibited on a number of occasions. In 1964, the family moved to Perth, Ontario where she continued to paint and became a noted antique collector. She played a leading role in founding both the Perth Day Care Centre and the Firehall Gallery and sat on the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee. Physician and feminist born at Winona, Canada West (now Ontario) on January 18, 1859. A member of a prominent Loyalist family that founded the E.D. Smith food-canning company, she took up teaching for a time before deciding to become a doctor. After encountering hostile behaviour from male medical students at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, she and several other women convinced the school in 1883 to open the Canadian Women's Medical College. After graduating, she opened a practice in Hamilton, Ontario, and then, in 1886, married Adam SHORTT, a professor at Queen's. She joined the faculty of W.M.C. and went on to become a professor in medical jurisprudence. Later, she embraced women's rights as a personal crusade and was elected vice president of the National Council of Women.

After graduating from Seaforth District High School, she attended Stratford Normal School and McDonald Institute in Guelph. She taught for five years in McKillop Township at Leadbury School (S.S.#7.) On June 6, 1936 she married Archie SOMERVILLE. After her marriage, Cora dedicated her life to providing a loving home for her husband and four daughters on the family farm in McKillop. She derived joy and contentment in her various domestic pursuits of cooking, gardening, sewing, decorating, and nurturing her family. For many years, she taught Sunday School at Caven United Church, Winthrop and also served as treasurer of the United Church Women there. In 1984, Cora and Archie retired and moved to their home in Seaforth. The family will receive Friends and relatives at Northside United Church, Seaforth on Tuesday, January 11, 2005 from 12: 00-1:30 p.m. Funeral service will be held following visitation at 2: 00 p.m. with Bruce WHITMORE and Reverend John GOULD officiating.
