Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, on Sunday, January 16, 2005. Bette
was a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend who
above all believed in the strength and the love of family.
She leaves her devoted husband of 52 years Thomas, children Judith
(Lee), Thomas (Teresa), Shelley, John (Maria), and Catherine
(Marty), and her beloved grandchildren, Katie, Kayley, Amanda,
Sarah, David, Robbie, Gillian, Russell, and Corey. Bette also
leaves her best friend and sister Catherine (and family), her
brother William (and family), her brother-in-law Gordon (Yvonne)
and step-brother and sister Bob, and Mary.
Bette lived a full life as a long time community volunteer and
a dedicated employee of McGraw Hill Ryerson and inspired and
led all who knew her by example.
The support, love and laughter of so many close family Friends
have been a constant source of strength to Bette and the entire
Gibson family.

in Ghana, West Africa. In Africa, her approach to life led her
into many adventures. Returning to Canada, she acquired a B.A.
from the University of Toronto and taught in Ontario. Looking
for further challenges, she nurtured the career of Benny

then took up a career as Office Manager for the medical practice
of Dr. Carmen
PRICE in Pickering. Many of his patients regretted

Hospital in the wood working shop of the Creative Arts Department.
A long time member of the Men's Bridge Club at Leaside United
Church, and member of Northlea United Church since 1954. Our

Aged seventy-nine, lawyer, lover of many Friends and of life
in general, died at his home in Vancouver on November 3rd, 2005
after struggling with cancer for eight months. Predeceased by
his sister, Stephanie
OUTTRIM. Survived by his sons Mark, (Barbara
and grand_son Chris) and John (Margaret and granddaughters Fuchsia
and Chelsea) and
by Patricia
KRAMER and granddaughter Rowen
also by his brother Richard (wife Lenora) and brother-in-law
Frank OUTTRIM and five cousins, five nephews and nieces and ten
great nephews and great nieces. He will be greatly missed by
the Friends who helped him through his last illness and especially
by his beloved friend of many years, Marjorie (Jo)
KEDDY.
The
family especially wishes to thank Dr. Duncan Miller, Lea Bennix,
R.N., and the home care and nursing staff from the Home Hospice
Program for their excellent care during Philip's last illness.
Born in Vancouver, Phil graduated from U.B.C. Law School in 1954
and articled to the late Jack Bourne, Q.C. He was called to the
Bar in May 1955 and after working in the oil industry in Alberta
returned to British Columbia to practice law in Dawson Creek
and later in Vancouver where he established his reputation as
a respected labour lawyer representing both Management and Union
clients. He was often involved in industrial relations for some
of the Province's leading economic industries.
He held a variety of professional offices including, President
of the Vancouver Bar Association, Chairman of the Canadian Law
Information Council, Executive Director of the Arbitrators Association
of British Columbia and Secretary/Treasurer of the University
of British Columbia Law Alumni Association. In retirement he
served as a Canadian observer in critical elections in Albania
and Bosnia.
He was a gregarious man with a remarkable gift for fun and Friendships.
He was a proud and active member of the Terminal City Club and
the Arbutus Club in Vancouver. In his career and in retirement
he enjoyed life thoroughly, reading eclectically, travelling
often and nurturing his many Friendships. He was a lover of Jazz
music, good parties and had a prodigious memory for anecdotes
and humour with which he regaled his Friends.
No service by Phil's request, but a celebration of his life will
be held on Monday, November 14th from 4: 45 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
(tributes starting at 5: 30 p.m.), President's Ball Room, Second
Floor, Terminal City Club, 837 West Hastings Street.
Donations may be made in his memory and sent to the Philip Shier

Hugh (91 years of age) passed away peacefully on November 10th.
He will be fondly remembered and greatly missed by Carol, his

Born in Montreal, Hugh moved to Vancouver in 1921. He graduated
from University of British Columbia with a B.Sc. and M.Sc., Chemical
Engineering in 1937. He earned a PhD in Industrial and Cellulose
Chemistry at McGill University in 1941. Hugh served as Chief
Chemist and Chief Explosives Inspector for the Canadian and United
Kingdom Governments during World War 2. In 1945 Hugh joined Alcan
in Kingston, Ontario as head of Aluminium Research progressing
to Deputy Director of Research. After retiring in 1973 he remained
active as an Independent Corrosion Consultant. A member of the
National Association of Corrosion Engineers from 1947 to 1983,
he served as it's first North American President in 1959-60 and
editor of its technical journal from 1973. Hugh was a pioneer
in aluminium corrosion, authoring a book on this subject and
receiving extensive recognition from peers around the globe.
Hugh returned to the Vancouver area in 1987. He had a zest for
life, adventure and travel. His career afforded him opportunities
to travel the globe and establish Friends in many countries.
He enjoyed relating these experiences to all of his family. We
will especially remember Hugh for his great intellect and his
lifelong love of learning, his generosity, compassion and wit.
Memorial Services will be held November 28, 2005 at 2: 00 p.m.
in the Boal Chapel at 1505 Lillooet Rd. North Vancouver. His
final resting place will be at Glenhaven Memorial Gardens in
Kingston, Ontario. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to
University of British Columbia Brain Research Center, 6253 N.W.
