Shirley Marks
SHIPMAN
By Mel SHIPMAN,
Wednesday,
March 2, 2005 - Page A18
Wife, mother, grandmother, wise counsellor, friend, reader, arts
enthusiast, networker supreme. Born June 8, 1925, in Montreal.
Died August 11, 2004, in Toronto, of meningitis, aged 79.
My wife Shirley was beautiful, vivacious, generous, considerate,
intelligent and affectionate, with a zest for life, a commitment
to social justice, and an ability to link family, Friends and
even total strangers into a web of meaningful relationships that,
once established, were almost impossible to rend asunder.
Here are some selected diverse voices from her extensive tribute
file that illustrate her wonderful personality, her remarkable
life, and the love and esteem in which she was held by so many.
Joshua COX says: Grandma, thank you for always making me feel
that my dreams were not unreasonable. Thank you for having convictions
and living your life with a purpose. And in the last few months
of your life, thank you for eating ice cream when you knew you
shouldn't, for being the one to tell your husband that he is
occasionally wrong, and, during Scrabble, for using a word that
no one else knew even existed.
Thank you for hugging me and telling me you loved me. And thank
you, when I was little, for spoiling me at every opportunity.
And, when I was big and you were little, for continuing to do
it.
Esther SHIPMAN: I remember accompanying my mother to the ceramics
studio where, between babies, she began to find creative expression.
I remember visits to art galleries, live theatre and attending
foreign films and traversing every corner of Toronto, passport
in hand, during the early years of the annual International Caravan.
I remember my mother's going back to school and getting her master's
of education and how my father took us out of the house every
Sunday so that my mother could be free to write her dissertation.
I remember my mother's spaghetti with meat sauce, veal scaloppini
and sweet and sour spareribs. I remember her dignity, quiet strength
and selflessness.
I remember her, above all, for creating, along with my father,
a warm and loving household where everyone was given the opportunity
to express his or her opinion, encouraged to strive for excellence,
and always to question and explore.
Norma PENNER:
Five days before she died, my husband and I celebrated
Mel and Shirley's 60th anniversary. Shirley looked as beautiful
as ever and we had a wonderful time reminiscing over our 60 years
of Friendship.
We also recalled her work with the federal government, counselling
young people seeking training and employment. Her support changed
the lives of hundreds of young people including our own son,
Gary. In the past 10 years, sadly, Shirley's health deteriorated.
But that did not stop her from participating in community affairs,
humanitarian endeavours, cultural activities and her involvement
with family and Friends.
It is devastating to have lost Shirley. But her spirit, positive
outlook, determination, and understanding and love will live
on.
Anita SHEDLETSKY:
When
Ralph and I moved to Toronto Shirley welcomed
us into her home, her world, and most importantly into her heart.
With Shirley we were never the family obligation but the family
she wanted to see and hear about.
In my family there is one word that describes Shirley and that
is MelanShirley. It was always: MelanShirley are coming for a
visit or MelanShirley have invited us for lunch. It is going
to be very hard for everyone to have to break the word in half
but Shirley will always be part of all of us.
Mel SHIPMAN is Shirley's husband.

Damaged shelter lacked sprinklers
Facility still met building, fire codes
40-year-old man died in Sunday fire
By Dale Anne
FREED,
Staff
Reporter
The Fred Victor Centre, where a 40-year-old man died in a fire
Sunday night, met building and fire code standards even though
it did not have sprinklers in residential areas, the centre's
executive director says.
Sprinklers are located in the garbage area and parking and ground-level
areas of the centre, which provides permanent housing for 194
previously homeless people, Mark
ASTON said yesterday.
He said the fire code didn't require them in residential levels.
Fire department spokesman David
SHEEN confirmed that the four-storey
centre complied with sprinkler standards.
Fire victim Abdirazak (Nero)
KAILLIE was found in his second-floor
apartment, next to the apartment where the blaze started, police
Det. Matt MOYER said.
ASTON said smoking was a possible cause of the fire, but added,
"that would be speculation at this point." He said smoking was
permitted in the apartments.
KAILLIE's distraught sister and mother arrived at the fire scene
Sunday night and spoke with police,
MOYER said.
Born in Somalia,
KAILLIE had lived in the centre for about 18
months, said Keith
HAMBLY, director of Fred Victor's housing
and shelter services.
"He was well liked in the community,"
HAMBLY said. It was a "fresh
start for him."
One friend said
KAILLIE was receiving disability payments.
About 50 Fred Victor residents were affected by the fire and
were offered room at downtown shelters so they wouldn't have
to go back on the streets,
ASTON said.
"If we have a way to prevent such tragedies in the future then
we have a responsibility to consider it," said Brendan
AGNEW-
ILER,
a spokesperson for Mayor David
MILLER.
Toronto
Fire
Chief Bill
STEWARD/STEWART/STUART said he wants sprinklers made
mandatory in all new residential construction. He said the department
is supporting a private member's bill on mandatory sprinklers
in new residential construction that is scheduled for second
reading at Queen's Park on Thursday.
STEWARD/STEWART/STUART acknowledged that retrofitting residential buildings
with sprinklers would be costly. "The industry indicates it costs
about $3.50 to $4 per square foot," he said. If the Fred Victor
board has the money, he said, "then in the interest of public
safety, why not?"
STEWARD/STEWART/STUART said there were 259 fire deaths in Toronto between 1994
and 2004, of which 223 were on residential properties.
