Failed robbery led to death
By Melinda
DALTON,
Free
Press
Reporter
A robbery gone bad led to a would-be robber dead in a stairwell
and an intended victim charged with manslaughter, police said
yesterday.
A 24-year-old London man has been charged with manslaughter and
two other Londoners with robbery after the city's 11th homicide
of the year, police said.
Dead is Stephen Robert
CORMACK, 45, police said. An autopsy performed
yesterday in Toronto concluded
CORMACK died as a result of a
stabbing.
Three people -- two men and one woman -- came to a unit in the
Northgate Park Apartments at 1424 Huron St. with the intention
of robbing a resident, police said.
The resident refused to comply with the demands of the would-be
robbers, police said.
Instead, the resident grabbed a weapon and used it on one of
the would-be robbers, police said.
The trio ran out of the apartment, police said.
The injured man fled to the building's north stairwell.
A resident found his lifeless body in the stairwell between the
first and second floors.
The discovery of a body in the early afternoon Friday, while
children played outside and residents went about their business,
left the neighbourhood in shock.
Dameon LODGE, 24, was arrested Friday and charged with manslaughter.
Elizabeth SCHMIDT, 39, and Rocco
CAVUOTI, 44, both of London,
have been charged with robbery in connection with Friday's events.
SCHMIDT was also charged with three counts of assaulting a police
officer and property damage.
All three suspects made court appearances yesterday.
This year, the city has already seen more than double the number
of homicides than in 2004.
"It is a record number if you consider the totals from the last
five years," said Const. Amanda
PFEFFER of the London Police.
