Talented man recalled through his own work
Win SCHELL's
Friends will honour his memory with a 90-minute
show.
By Joe MATYAS,
Free
Press
Reporter
London renaissance man Win
SCHELL was held in such high regard
by his Friends they're honouring him seven months after his sudden
death. They're celebrating his wit, wisdom and whimsy in a public
way by shining a light on them at Central secondary school Friday
night.
Following a 90-minute showcase of
SCHELL's many talents, they'll
move to another venue for a social event, a kind of belated wake.
The▼ death of Winston George
SCHELL -- a teacher, writer, publisher,
artist and folksinger -- at the age of 61 took people by surprise
last September, said Sue
CASSAN, an organizer of the tribute
to him. He died of a brain hemorrhage.
"It was so sudden, it came as a shock," she said, adding some
Friends approached his wife, Linda
GREGSON, with the idea of
holding a memorial event at a later date to honour
SCHELL.
"Win was a remarkable person, a man of many talents and interests,"
CASSAN said. "He ran in a lot of circles. He had a lot of Friends."
By occupation,
SCHELL was a teacher of English and media studies
who plied his trade at Banting and Central secondary schools
and at the Wheable Centre for Adult Education.
He was the head of the English departments at Central and Wheable,
said CASSAN, who taught with him at both schools.
"He inspired a lot of students," she said. "They loved him."
In the community,
SCHELL was known as the founder of Ergo Books,
a small publishing company that gave a number of London writers
their start or the opportunity to publish books that didn't fit
the criteria of bigger publishers.
Ergo's authors were an eclectic bunch, including playwright James
REANEY, Herman
GOODDEN, Gloria
MULCAHY, Mary Ann
MICRO, Jaroslav
HAVELKA and London's well-known street persona, Roy
McDONALD.
SCHELL's own works included Reading, Writing and Radio, co-authored
with Marstan
WOOLLINGS, that was used as a school text.
SCHELL released two albums of original music in a folk style,
Any Directions and City Wilderness. He also penned Riverside
Tom, a song about the wild turkey that created a stir in London
a couple of years ago.
"It was a funny song that reflected Win's great sense of humour
that was always close to the surface,"
CASSAN said. "Even his
recipes and school department minutes could make you laugh."
Memorials usually feature people talking about the departed,
but Friday's event will be a presentation of
SCHELL's essays,
poetry, music and one of his short plays by his Friends.
Some of his paintings will also be available for sale,
CASSAN
said.
Donations will also be collected to establish a scholarship in
Win's name at the Thames Valley District school board, she said.

Officer killed as cruiser hits moose
Partner flown to hospital from Muskoka
Dense fog at 2 a.m. cloaked highway in cottage country
By Scott ROBERTS,
Staff
Reporter
Bracebridge -- When the dispatch call was made to Bracebridge
ambulance workers, Jason
MOORE's heart sank.
The caller on the line described a horrific road collision in
the heart of cottage country where an Ontario Provincial Police
officer had been killed early yesterday.
"I had this feeling. I just knew it was him," said
MOORE, an
ambulance dispatcher.
"I just had this fear that it was him."
MOORE's fear became a reality just minutes later when he found
out from emergency workers at the scene what he already suspected
that the 29-year-old constable killed was his best friend,
Andrew POTTS.
"It was tough to hear," he said. "The whole time I was hoping
it wasn't him. But I knew it was."
POTTS, a seven-year veteran of the Ontario Provincial Police,
was pronounced dead at the scene after the police cruiser he
was driving collided with a moose on Muskoka Rd. 169, near Walker's
Point Rd., about halfway between Gravenhurst and Bala.
His partner, Const. Matt
HANES, 39, suffered head injuries and
was airlifted to St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto. He was listed
in serious condition, but is expected to survive.
The two officers were responding to a domestic dispute when they
struck the large animal at about 2 a.m. Dense fog clouded the
road and could have caused the accident, which also killed the
moose, police said.
Ontario Provincial Police officials would not confirm if the
emergency lights of the cruiser were on, or if speed may have
contributed to the incident.
After a night without sleep,
MOORE travelled to the scene of
the collision in search of closure. By afternoon, there were
few signs that the accident had taken place. An Ontario Provincial
Police crest had been tagged to a telephone pole nearby.
Friends and family described
POTTS as a reserved but funny man
who loved to ride the Harley-Davidson motorcycle he recently
purchased.
A terrible golfer, a great friend -- that is how
MOORE will remember
POTTS.
The two had been close since high school. They were roommates
for two years and
POTTS was in
MOORE's wedding party.
MOORE said
his best memories of
POTTS came from road trips to Ohio and Florida.
"He was really a special guy. He'd be the first one to come over
and help you when you needed it. He touched a lot of people here."
From nearby Port Carling, Bob
POTTS could only whisper as he
tried to describe the son he lost, while his wife Shirley sat
close by.
"He was my best friend," said
POTTS as his voice waned.
"He was just a great young man, just a responsible, gentle young
man. He was just so happy."
Andrew POTTS -- known as Pottsy to close Friends -- had a girlfriend,
Erin, and less than a month ago he became an uncle when his sister,
Amy SCHELL, gave birth to a baby girl.
Although POTTS was tough on the outside, Friends believed he
had a soft spot.
"I think he was excited about the new baby," said
MOORE. "He
may just not have wanted anybody to know."
POTTS is the first Ontario Provincial Police officer killed this
year and the first ever killed on duty from the Bracebridge detachment.
He joined the force in 1998 and was initially posted to the Pickle
Lake detachment in northwestern Ontario. He returned to serve
his hometown of Bracebridge in 2000.
Fellow officers at the Bracebridge detachment mourned the loss
of a man they called a cornerstone of the community.
"Andy was the type of guy you could always count on being there
when you needed him," said Const. Ted
SMITH. "He was a pleasure
to work with and pleasant to talk to. He was just the type of
guy you liked to work with."
Premier Dalton McGuinty expressed his condolences."Our thoughts
go out to provincial constable
POTTS' family and Friends," said
McGuinty from Queen's Park.
The funeral service will take place on Friday at 1 p.m. at the
Glenwood Chapel, 4060 Muskoka Rd. in Port Carling.
Four people died in Ontario in motor vehicle collisions with
wild animals in 2003, compared to eight in 2002. Also in Ontario
that year, there were 13,222 motor vehicle collisions with wildlife
that caused property damage; that includes 503 motor vehicle
collisions that resulted in human injuries.
