One driver dead, second hurt as two trucks collide head-on

One man is dead and another was clinging to life yesterday after two vehicles collided head-on near Strathroy on Tuesday night.
Provincial police said a flatbed truck travelling east on Egremont Drive around 11 p.m. crossed into the path of a westbound pickup about a kilometre west of Highway 81. The impact sent both vehicles into the north ditch.
John Brenten PETERS, 23, of Adelaide Metcalfe, identified as the pickup driver, was killed.
The▼ driver of the flatbed, Cameron RUSSELL, 20, of Nairn, was taken to Strathroy hospital and transferred to a London hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.
"We have no indication at this point what happened," said Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Dave REKTOR.
REKTOR said the road was straight and flat and weather was not a factor.
Traffic investigators are waiting to speak to Russell to uncover more details.
Police are trying to determine whether speed was a factor. REKTOR said it doesn't appear that alcohol played a part.
Anyone who may have witnessed the accident is asked to call the Ontario Provincial Police at 1-888-310-1122.

Actor, singer, producer. Born May 3, 1934, in Winnipeg. Died September 17, 2004, in Toronto of vascular disease, aged 70.
'I think we should keep in touch," he said smiling as he rolled up the car window and drove down the street through the snow. We had met at a post-concert reception at the University of Toronto's Hart House. He was introduced as Bob JEFFREY and we had talked. Snow was falling and he offered me a drive home in his old Austin Mini, which had come all the way from Winnipeg with holes in the floor and a horn operated by touching two wires together. He was lively, open and possessed of an innate charm. He was a singer and an actor. It was just before Christmas and he flew home to Manitoba the next day to see his family for the holidays and to sing at Saint John's Cathedral. In the first few months of the new year, when Bob returned to Toronto, I quickly realized that my new friend was a talented performer, sought after as lead tenor in oratorios and as a chorus singer on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation variety shows.
He seemed to be constantly in motion and his passion was driving a car. He persuaded his bank manager that as a singer/actor, he was a good risk and the old Mini was exchanged for a new and sportier Sprite. It was followed later by a series of convertibles. Then, only a Continental Mark IV would do. His final drive, a silver Intrepid, had a brand name that aptly reflected its owner's determination to maintain his quality of life in his last, difficult years.
That summer of 1961, the Sprite took him to Stratford and the direction of Sir Tyrone Guthrie. The show was Pirates of Penzance. The production would move to the United States, then England.
He kept in touch, writing from New York where he bowled with Kaye Ballard and Jerry Orbach, after the show, late into the night. He wrote in feigned distress from the U.S. bus tour of Pirates in which he understudied the male lead, "that guy never gets sick." Letters from London were full of the excitement of a Command Performance before the Queen at Her Majesty's Theatre and a successful audition for the lead role of Tony in West Side Story that would take him to acclaim and sold-out houses in the capital cities of Scandinavia.
A few years later, back in New York for rehearsals, he wrote glowingly of a new musical: Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. That show would become part of his life for the next 15 years, taking him to Boston, Montreal, Ottawa, Philadelphia, New York, Fredericton, Sudbury, and to Gravenhurst, Ontario, for the Muskoka Summer Theatre where he worked with artistic director Michael Ayoub in the development of a musical theatre workshop. He bought a log cabin just outside of town and became a reliable presence in that summer theatre community.
By then we had joined forces to create a production company in Toronto to put on stage shows sometimes featuring Bob (now called Robert). Cabaret was popular and Robert was on stage at Old Angelo's, Theatre in the Dell, the Teller's Cage and the Prince Hotel. Sometimes it was our production; often it wasn't.
The years brought diversification. In the 1990s, Robert became enthused by younger artists working in film and video, fostering their work by helping to create the Paulus Film Group. Paulus Film Group's first collaborations always featured Robert in cameo roles.
In September, 2004, weakened by strokes, memory loss, confusion and occasional fury at his condition, he suddenly turned to me while I was driving his Intrepid in the afternoon sunlight and said, smiling: "I think we should keep in touch" and it echoed crisp and clear across the decades -- the same inflection, the same smile as the night we met as the snow fell. Five days later, Robert's heart stopped. There would be no goodbyes.

Toronto -- If you knew Peggy Sue, you knew Bob McADOREY. That's because, with his pile of curly hair and horn-rimmed glasses, the Toronto disc jockey was a ringer for Buddy Holly, the songwriter and singer from Texas whose song was a hit in 1959. The two men were born 10 months apart -- McADOREY in 1935, Holly in 1936 and actually met in the mid-1950s when Mr. McADOREY was a disc jockey in Guelph, Ontario, and the singer was on a tour of Canada.
"His job was to introduce Buddy Holly at a concert at Kitchener. When he went on stage, the crowd went wild, and Bob though 'Gee, I didn't know I was this popular,' " remembered his sister Pat RUSSELL. "Of course, they thought he was Buddy Holly."
For decades, Mr. McADOREY was the entertainment commentator on Global Television; he retired less than five years ago. But in an earlier era, he was a household name in Southern Ontario. In 1960, just a few months after Buddy Holly died in a plane crash in 1959, his look-alike joined Toronto's CHUM. Almost overnight, Bob McADOREY became the top disc jockey at CHUM, the No. 1 rock station in the country. He was astonished when the station paid him what he was asking for -- $7,200 a year (about $50,000 in today's money, according to the Bank of Canada's inflation calculator).
"Bob McADOREY, whose face is as well known in Toronto as Mayor Givens, has the most power to dictate what pop music Ontario teens listen to," wrote the Toronto Telegram in 1966.
Not only was he the on-air man in the key 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. slot, he was also the music director. He chose the records the other six disc jockeys played. He and the other disc jockeys decided on CHUM's Top 10, which sent kids to record stores to buy records with a big hole in the middle and a song on each side. They spun at 45 revolutions a minute and were called 45s.
"He alone commands what goes on the hit parade in Canada," wrote The Globe's Blake KIRBY in 1968. "Middle-aged squares who run record stores use the CHUM chart, the weekly list of what McADOREY is playing and plugging as a buying guide."
Along the way, he shared the footlights with such big-name visitors as the Beatles and the Rolling Stones.
The CHUM hit parade made records such as The Unicorn by the Irish Rovers. Mr. McADOREY, a sentimental Irish-Canadian, pushed the record, which sold 140,000 copies in Canada and a million in the United States. But he didn't like everything on the CHUM chart. It was a business, after all.
"We're playing records here which I just can't bear to listen to, but I wouldn't let that influence what goes on the air," Mr. McADOREY once told The Globe and Mail. His sister said that when he went home after work, he was so sick of rock 'n' roll that he put earphones on and listened to classical music.
Like many successful big-city disc jockeys, Mr. McADOREY also ran dances on the weekends -- events with such names as Bob McAdorey's Canadian Bandstand or Canadian Hopville. He and a couple of other disc jockeys owned a company called Teen Scene Ltd., which put on dances in towns all over Southern Ontario.
After a long spell on CHUM, Bob McADOREY either was too old -- he was well into his 30s -- or too tired, and so he suddenly found himself fired. Unlike the regular corporate world, where people resign, in radio they are just plain sacked. Disc jockeys almost wear it as a badge of honour.
"There are no hard feelings," he told an entertainment writer in 1972 after he had been sacked from CFTR following a stint at CFGM. "I was told that it was either the station's new music-and-contests format or me." Within days, he had rejoined radio station CFGM.
A few years later, he morphed into television. No one told him that radio types, from the hot side of the Marshall McLuhan equation, are not supposed to be able to make the switch to the cool world of television. He perched on his stool in 1973 and performed for about 27 years.
Bob McADOREY was born within earshot of the Niagara Falls. His father worked as a machinist on the railway and the whole family lived near both the tracks and the roundhouse at Niagara Falls, Ontario For the rest of his life, Mr. McADOREY maintained a love affair with trains and rode them at every opportunity.
He went to high school at Stamford Collegiate. An Irish Catholic, he was one of two non-Protestants in the class. The other was Barbara FRUM, later the host of The Journal and As It Happens on Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. The two would spend the religious class in another room, enjoying their time off.
In Grade 12, Mr. McADOREY started work at the local radio station, doing a program in the early morning before class. "One day, the station manager told me to go on air and do the play-by-play of a local baseball game," he told the Toronto Star in 2000. "I didn't know the players' names and I didn't know much about baseball, so I sat in the bleachers and interviewed the spectators and it seemed to work."
After that, he was hooked. For a time, he worked all over -- including radio station CJDC in remote Dawson's Creek, British Columbia Even then, he was fairly outrageous. " CJDC had access to Canadian Broadcasting Corporation feeds," he said in 2000. "But nobody monitored us, so we sold everything -- the one o'clock time signal to a jewellery store, the Queen's Christmas Message brought to you by Sammy's Bar and Grill."
But it was soon after he had moved to Guelph, Ontario, that things really began to happen and he hit the big time at the age of 24 by working for CHUM.
Though he may have been at the top of the pop game in the Toronto of the sixties, he also became a national figure at Global as it expanded from a base in Southern Ontario to become the country's third network. He never applied for a job in television, it was just chance.
Bill CUNNINGHAM, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation foreign correspondent brought in to run Global News, hired him after he saw him speak during a tour of the new television station. At the time, Mr. McADOREY was working for Alan SLAIGHT, a prescient broadcaster who had run CHUM, bought CFGM and was one of the early owners of Global. Mr. CUNNINGHAM's plan was to lighten up the newscast and hire a kind of humourist-commentator. Thus, Mr. McADOREY covered entertainment and did light pieces for the newscast, heading out with a cameraman to find what he could. Once, during an Air Canada strike, he drifted out to Toronto's Pearson International Airport and happened to find Terminal 2 entirely deserted. The scene made irresistible camera fodder. The pair had time to erect an impromptu bowling alley and roll a few balls before the party was broken up by patrolling policemen.
The show was an enduring success. It helped that Mr. McADOREY was good-looking, possessed a great voice and was totally unaffected and unpretentious. Behind the scenes, though, Global was in turmoil and not just financially.
The network kept trying to reinvent itself. One idea was to bring in an untried newsreader, Suzanne PERRY, who was one of Pierre TRUDEAU's press aides and whose son, Matthew PERRY, went on to fame in the sitcom Friends. Sadly, Ms. PERRY was put on air before she was ready and that experiment failed.
A short while afterward, the network tried something called News at Noon, with Bob McADOREY doing entertainment, Mike ANSCOMBE the sports, and John DAWE, business. The three of them joked, made fun of each other, and did and said things you weren't supposed to see on television. All of a sudden, they had a huge audience, unheard of at that time of day.
"We broke new ground with 300,000 viewers at noon," said business reporter John DAWE. " Then it expanded and we did the 5: 30 news as well. We worked together for 14 years."
As he matured, Mr. McADOREY lost his Buddy Holly looks. Instead, he was often mistaken for another famous person with glasses and a mass of curly hair -- Ken TAILOR/TAYLOR, the Canadian ambassador to Iran who sheltered American colleagues during the 1979-80 hostage crisis.
At Global, the news department kept trying new things and new people, though the on-air staff remained pretty much the same. One producer didn't like the jocular format. And Mr. McADOREY didn't like him. He rebelled by being provocative on air.
"It's Friday, and I didn't really feel much like working today. The boss is out of town so I took it easy this afternoon, stretching out in my office, reading and daydreaming," he began his part of the 6 p.m. newscast on April 8, 1983. It got him fired.
"Unprofessional and insulting to the viewers," read the note from his pompous producer. The viewers thought otherwise. Phone lines buzzed and letters landed on all the right desks. Two weeks later, the producer was fired and Bob McADOREY was rehired.
As host of Entertainment Desk from 1991 to 1997, he guided it through many lively segments. Among the most memorable was the appearance of comedienne Judy Tenuta. "[She] pretty well took over the show, which bothered some viewers but not me," he once said. "Her wild style made for bizarre television. Most of the interview was done with Judy sitting on my lap making semi-lewd comments."
For all that, he never did like producers. At the time of his retirement in July, 2000, Andrew RYAN of The Globe and Mail asked him what advice he would give to aspiring young entertainment journalists. "Producers are dorks, actors are jerks," Mr. McADOREY answered. "The only ones worth talking to are directors."
Having been asked to retire, he said he had no expectations of a gold watch. Rather, "how about a gold boot up the butt? Retirement was not my idea. I always thought I had a few more good years left."
Instead, he chose to retire quietly at his home in Niagara-On-The-Lake, Ontario His main hobby was reading and he was something of an authority on James Joyce. An Irish nationalist, he had a lifelong obsession with the great Dublin writer.
Robert Joseph McADOREY was born in Niagara Falls, Ontario, on July 24, 1935. He died on February 5 at St. Catharines, Ontario He was 70 and had suffered prolonged illness. He is survived by daughter Colleen, sister Pat and brother Terry. He was predeceased by his wife and by two of three children.

Sister, friend, aunt. Born December 31, 1948 in Hamilton, Ontario, Died January 10, of acute renal failure, aged 56.
Linda ARNOTT was Linda ARNOTT: no nicknames, aliases, titles, or abbreviations. No Mississippi, Ms, or Mrs. Not even a middle name. Although she laughed with Friends when a credit card arrived in the name of Mister Linda ARNOTT, she did not appreciate anyone messing with her name. "Don't call me Lin," she might say if you attempted an endearment. "That's not my name."
If you were to visit Linda, you would sit at her kitchen table. You might find her doing crosswords with a large mug of tea a sugar bowl, creamer, and spoon, all within easy reach. "She drank pails-full of tea," remembers friend and former co-worker, Laura RUSSELL. " But on days when she felt under the weather, she drank ginger ale or 'sick pop,' as she called it." Linda was well acquainted with sickness. She lived with diabetes and lupus, an autoimmune disorder named for the wolf. Like the wolf, Linda was social and loyal to family, yet comfortable being alone. She might lash out, if she felt cornered or offended, but only then.
In her younger days, Linda used her kitchen as a gathering place for Friends and workmates. The group would convene at Linda's for refreshments and a chat before heading out to a dance. Her house was especially full on New Year's Eve, Linda's birthday. Friends dropped by to say hello and "Happy Birthday" whether they planned to stay and party with their hostess, or were on their way to another event.
Over the years, Linda opened her home to Friends who wanted to talk over their troubles or who needed a place to stay. She kept a list of those for whom she'd provided refuge -- for a few days, a week, or even a month -- while they sorted out their problems. Linda's introspective and self-evaluating nature caused her to be sentimental about Friends and family. She kept every card and letter she ever received and periodically reviewed them.
I met Linda in 1983 when she volunteered to help a friend help me with a surprise party that I had planned for my husband. While I dealt with three young children and a caterer, Linda took her cue from a felt tablecloth, with giant black and red spades, clubs, hearts and diamonds on it, and quietly transformed my house with similarly themed decorations and tableware. When guests arrived she headed for the kitchen.
"At work, Linda was a plain Jane," recalls Laura RUSSELL. " But for Christmas parties she would dress in a long gown, apply makeup, and remove her glasses for the night, even though she couldn't see without them." Linda worked first in the stockroom at Zeller's in Hamilton's downtown core. When the location closed she took employment with the Hamilton General and Henderson General Hospitals first as a porter, then in the central supply room. After 15 years, health concerns forced her to take disability leave. "Some days her skin tormented her so that she was kept from her regular duties," says her sister. "But she never complained." She took things like home repairs and daily problems in stride, except for the time some hazelnuts went missing and she discovered to her horror that squirrels had somehow entered her house.
Linda possessed a strong will. She didn't drive but that didn't stop her from purchasing a Bentwood rocker as a gift for a friend. She carried the chair from the mall to an apartment building a few blocks away. There she assembled it. "She never shrank from a challenge," remembers her cousin, Gale McQUEEN.
Linda will be remembered for her quick wit, sense of humour, and love of a happy time, an attitude that she maintained through sickness and difficulty to the end. "A drink, a smoke, and a laugh -- that was Linda," says her sister, Diane GAMBLE.

Born in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, and resided in Plymouth and Halifax before moving to Toronto with his family. Beyond his professional responsibilities, Don was known for his involvement in extra curricular activities with the Toronto Board of Education and Department of National Defense. Especially remembered for his annual Collins Muskoka Invitational charity golf tournament, he joyfully filled his time with curling, golf, skiing, travel and cottaging. He was predeceased by his father Robert James in 1976. He will be affectionately remembered by his mother-in-law Ann (WATSON) MASTERS, Marlene's sisters and brother, their spouses, and many nieces and nephews as well as the Watson family. On October 28th 2005, Don passed away peacefully at his home. The elder son of the late Russell TURNBULL and Kate BRETT, he is survived by his brother Neil TURNBULL of Bancroft, and predeceased by a granddaughter, Tara Lynn TURNBULL. A kind and gentle man and a generous father, he will be lovingly missed by his children and grandchildren: Steve (Lynn) and his children Shannon and Megan; Bob (Debi) and their children Russell and Heather; Barb McREAVY (Tom) and their children Mitch and Cassie; Jim (Penny) and their children Chris, Trevor, James and Jenny; Kathy COLLINS (Gary) and their children Emily, Frank and Mark; Lynn TURNBULL and Lori WHITE/WHYTE and her children Melissa and Samantha. He is also survived by and will be greatly missed by his wife the former Jean RUSSELL and his companion Marilyn GRAHAM. Don, the fifth generation of his family to live on the family homestead, spent his entire life in Mono Centre. Well-known and respected in the farming community, he raised prized-winning polled Herefords for many years. He was also known by cattle breeders of Dufferin County as an A.I. technician for 17 years. Following this he became a real estate agent for the John D. Hutchison Real Estate Agency. Although retired, his life-long interest in his horses continued to be his greatest enjoyment. She is loved by her sister Nancy ENRIGHT and brothers Terry and Kevin SMYTH. She is united with her sister Eileen CARNEGIE and brothers Frank and Stan SMYTH who predeceased her. Mom was blessed with her grandchildren Vince (Karin), Jill, Charlene, Nicole (Glenn), Patrick, Krista (Craig), Karl, Kyle, Bob (Tonia), Kevin (Lisa), Sarah, Kathleen, Joseph, Jonathan, Jason (Terrie), Becky, Kyle (Kendra), Lindsay, Derek, Craig, Mark, Julia, Casey, Allana, Danielle, Sophia, Bianca, David and great-grandchildren Abby, Brooklyn, Evan and Ky. She also leaves behind many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. Mom was born in England on August 5, 1927 and at the age of three moved to Canada with her family, where she later met her husband David. Raising fourteen children in tough times was a full time job, however, this exceptional mother always worked late at night at a "real" job for extra income to help support her family. Many will remember her little car up and down the concessions as a rural route mail lady. For many years Mom was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion where she volunteered her time and efforts. Mom loved her bingo, her bowling and her golf. In retirement she enjoyed wintering in Panama City and Phoenix where she was a true sun worshipper. If wealth were measured by family and Friends, Mom had riches beyond compare. Our family would like to thank the staff, physicians and nurses at The Wynfield in Oshawa and Markham Stouffville Hospital for their wonderful care. Friends may call at Low and Low Funeral Home, Uxbridge for visitation on Thursday, November 17, 2005 from 1-4 p.m. and 6-9 p.m., and Funeral Mass on Friday, November 18, 2005 at 11: 30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Uxbridge. Interment Uxbridge Cemetery. In Mom's memory, donations may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion or the Canadian Cancer Society. "Don't be dismayed at goodbyes. Dear mother of Heather (Wayne), Ruth (Don), Mark (Cyndy), Cindy (Steve), and Brent (Sue). Devoted grandma of Melissa, Ashley, Jamie, Kelly, Elyse, Kylie, Spencer, Brendan, Tyler, Lauren, and Ian. Dear sister-in-law of Ward (Shirley). Barbara was a piano teacher, kindergarten teacher, an accomplished pianist, a wonderful wife, and an inspirational mother and grandmother. Barbara will be lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched. Passed away peacefully at age 90 on Wednesday, December 21, 2005 at Markham Stouffville Hospital. Predeceased by his first wife Carol in 1988. Beloved husband of Gwen. Loving father of John and his wife Carole, Dave and his wife Linda, and Sharon and her husband Rod RUSSELL. Much loved grandfather of Brian, Lynn, Stephen, Christy, Scott, Kari, Kim and Kati, and great-grandfather to Michael, Christine, Victoria, Braeden, Lauren, Ella and Stephen. Fred touched many lives as a Pastor, and will be deeply missed by his extended family and many Friends on four continents.
