Judge halts court to pay tribute to officer
The community remembered a 37 year Ontario Provincial Police veteran, Snr. Const. Jim BLAIR, Thursday.
A funeral for BLAIR was held at Jubilee Presbyterian Church, on Main Street, in Stayner.
The local resident died from a heart attack Monday at his Huron Street home. He was 62.
Const. Steve HARDISTY, of the Collingwood Ontario Provincial Police detachment, said BLAIR started policing at the Stayner detachment and subsequently transferred to Huronia West in Wasaga Beach.
For the last few years he worked as a court officer at the Ontario Court of Justice in Collingwood. Justice Roland HARRIS paid tribute to BLAIR during plea court on Tuesday.
"Before we begin our ordinary business, I want to pause to mention the sudden passing, yesterday, of one of my favourite people, who was an integral part of court operations here in Collingwood," HARRIS said.
"Provincial Constable Jim BLAIR was one of the longest-serving Ontario Provincial Police officers in the province. He was a fixture in these courts, sitting at the counsel table, to my left, on days like today, and organizing the mass of files."
During his remarks, HARRIS talked about BLAIR as a person.
"Jim's kindness, efficiency, knowledge, intelligence and gentle sense of humour made him stand out, like a beacon in the administration of justice, and made the lives of all he touched a little better."
On each day we had the pleasure of dealing with him."
BLAIR was a friend to local journalist Sheila ROWLAND, who covers court for The Connection, The Stayner Sun and The Wasaga Sun.
"Const. BLAIR was well-known to me over the past 10 years as a friend and loyal court officer, a fellow who was ever willing to oblige with answers to any questions I might have as a newspaper reporter covering the courts."
ROLAND noted that when asked how his day was, BLAIR regularly replied in a cheery manner, "top drawer."
BLAIR, a Kirkland Lake native, is survived by his wife Mary and children Shawn and Samantha.
Donations in his memory can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
