Teen dies in Peel park ambush

Dwayne LLOYD didn't stand a chance.
Desperately leaping over a fence to seek the shelter of a backyard, the 17-year-old Brampton youth was cut down in a hail of at least five bullets Saturday night from a gunman who fired repeatedly from a clump of evergreens at the edge of a neighbourhood park.
LLOYD fell to the lawn, where he died in the grass.
A 21-year-old pal was shot in the leg as he fled the park, but was able to limp into the subdivision before collapsing in a pool of blood in a driveway up the street. He's recovering from his wounds at William Osler Health Centre.
LLOYD's slaying was Peel's third homicide this year.
"I was freaking out," said Joanne ROTATORE, a mother of two, with a third on the way, whose home borders Dixie/Sandalwood Park, in the Bovaird Dr. and Dixie Rd. area of north-end Brampton.
"I was asleep, I heard gunshots and it woke me up."
The teen was slain after spending the day with Friends watching a three-on-three basketball tournament at nearby Harold M. Brathwaite Secondary School.
Police said LLOYD and his buddies were riding their bikes through the park about 10: 30 p.m. when they were fired upon at close range by a gunman hiding in the trees.
Peel police forensic officers used coloured strings to chart the trajectory of bullets from the evergreens, where shell casings were found, into backyards of homes in the quiet neighbourhood along Loons Call Cres.
Bullet strikes were found on fence posts and on parts of chainlink fencing, which was stripped of its plastic coating and twisted by one shot.
"I had a feeling that sooner or later, something like this was going to happen," ROTATORE said. "Ever since they built that high school (18 months ago), there have been gang fights and other stuff out there.
"To be honest with you, I'm shocked, but I'm not surprised."
While neighbours gathered in small clutches up the street, Peel officers marched side by side across a soccer pitch in the park, searching for clues to the shootings.
Forensic officers used a metal detector to recover bullets from the lawns of adjacent homes.
Some neighbours feared that gangs might be responsible for the attack.
Down the park pathway that winds out to Dixie Rd., wooden fences are spray-painted with gang markings and other symbols of an underworld of violence. Some have been X-ed out in an attempt to reclaim territory for the other side.
The shooting, said Jacinto AMARAL, whose home borders the park, was "scary."
AMARAL, his wife, two kids and his mother-in-law were watching television when the gunfire erupted. He told them all to duck for cover and was surprised by the eerie silence that followed the shootings.
"That's just crazy," AMARAL said of the ease with which young people seem to get guns. It's just ridiculous how easily accessible it is to them. It opens our eyes, that's for sure."
Eight houses up the street, Giancarlo SODA was watering his grass when he heard gunshots, then ran out front to see a young man lying in a neighbour's driveway, bleeding from the leg and screaming.
"It's a safe neighbourhood, but now you feel scared, you want to keep your kids inside," the 38-year-old father of two said.
Neighbour Pat MARCELLO watched police try to calm the wounded man and said he felt sympathy for the victims.
"He was screaming, moaning, he was in pain," said MARCELLO, 32. "And another kid was screaming that his brother had been shot.
"They're 17 years old, their whole lives ahead of them."
He said he's witnessed fights in the park behind the high school, including a recent brawl involving six teens with a crowd of hundreds egging them on.
"These kids were cheering them like animals," he recalled.
"They were enjoying it, they were loving it.
"I was disgusted."
An autopsy was planned for today.
Homicide detectives interviewed several people yesterday but were still trying to learn what provoked the attack.

Husband, father, grandfather, storyteller, friend. Born May 21, 1930, in Toronto. Died September 12, 2004, of cardiac arrest resulting from kidney failure, aged 74.
In July of 2004, my Dad and I sat on the back porch of my Montréal apartment. The day was sunny and clear and we were enjoying the serenity. My Dad was admiring the view: electrical poles and clotheslines interwoven on a clear blue sky. "This is what I imagine Mordecai Richler's world was like," he said. I agreed. By evoking this literary scenery, he transformed those brief instants into a scene from a book. Now that he is gone, sentences like these and moments we shared all echo in my mind. Since he died suddenly in September, my Dad has become a series of stories, so it seems appropriate that I keep him with me in this way. For my father was a storyteller, and writing about his life is a way of following in his footsteps.
Alan BROWN was born in Toronto, the eldest son of Ruth and Reuben BROWN. His father, Dr. Reuben BROWN, practised dentistry in downtown Toronto. Alan admired his father's generosity and social consciousness, manifested through his willingness to treat all patients in need, regardless of their financial means. His mother, Ruth BROWN (ROTENBERG,) graduated from the University of Toronto in 1926. A talented pianist, she made her debut at Massey Hall at 6 and later played at her father's movie house, the Mary Pickford Theatre, which stood at the corner of Queen and Spadina. Her musical prowess stayed with her well into her 90s, and in the last years of her life, she played the piano on the stage of Roy Thomson Hall. My Dad was so proud to see his mother on stage, her fast fingers racing along the keys during her piano accompaniment to a chase or love scene.
Not inclined to follow in his mother's musical footsteps, Alan opted to study dentistry, like his father. As a young man he studied at University College, and was very proud that his two daughters continued in this tradition. He graduated from the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry in 1954, and was very active in the Toronto chapter of the Alpha Omega Fraternity. He went on to practise oral surgery in Toronto for many years, with appointments at the Toronto General Hospital and at Mount Sinai Hospital. In 1986, he was appointed an assistant professor of oral surgery at the University of Toronto Faculty of Dentistry. Father of five, when he died he was the proud grandfather of six.
My Dad's extreme modesty meant that, every so often, I would learn new and unexpected things about him. For young children, parents are mysterious and enigmatic creatures; with my father, this intrigue lasted into my adulthood. "You lived in New York?" I asked, surprised at my new discovery. He then told me about his first oral surgery internship at Harlem Hospital in the 1950s. "You were at that hockey game?" my brother exclaimed. And, indeed, in September, 1972, my father had travelled to Russia. A lifelong sports fan, he considered himself a lucky man to have witnessed Paul Henderson's overtime goal that won the series.
Alan BROWN was an extraordinary man of class, character and charm. He was, above all, a kind man, and his kindness reflected itself in everything he did. My back porch is now covered in snow; winter has taken with it the scenery of that peaceful summer afternoon. The season has changed and my father has passed away. In a couple of months, summer will come again; the snow will melt, our scene will once again appear and my Dad's words will echo in my mind, like so many other things he has said to me throughout my life. We will never relive those moments, but I can relive our story every time I look out of my window.

Mr. Walter Thomas CORNISH, age 85, of Stratford passed away peacefully at the London Health Sciences Centre, Westminister Campus on Sunday, June 26, 2005. Born in Lucky Lake, Saskatchewan, son of the late Harry CORNISH and the former Ellen ALLINSON. He served in the Royal Engineers and was overseas for four and a half years. Walter was employed at Canadian Tire, McKerlie Automotive and Kehl Automotive retiring in 1984 due to ill health.
Survived by his wife Elsa (SCHULLER) CORNISH, Stratford, daughter Vonna and husband Art SMITH, London, son Vance CORNISH and wife Jeannette, Stratford, stepson Robert ROTH, Stratford. Also survived by grandchildren, great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and their families. Predeceased by his first wife Verla AGAR and his second wife Georgena (Jean) CASLICK, brother Leonard CORNISH, sister Doris WILLIAMSON. Friends and relatives may call at the W.G. 85, of Tavistock passed away in Stratford General Hospital on Thursday, December 22, 2005 with his family by his side. He was born in East Zorra Township on October 9, 1920 a son of the late Joseph and Lydia (LICHTI) ROTH. With his wife he was co-founder of Roth Electric Limited at R.R.#1, Tavistock and was a member of Tavistock Mennonite Church. He married the former Erma BAECHLER in East Zorra Township on January 30, 1944. She predeceased him on September 6, 2000. Mahlon is survived by two daughters, Irene GOLLNITZ of Tavistock, Beulah PATTERSON of Stratford; four sons, Sherman and wife Jenny ROTH of Zurich; Cephas and wife Paulette ROTH, Murray and wife Barbara ROTH and Eugene ROTH, all of Tavistock sixteen grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; three sisters, Ina and husband Lavern BENDER, Elma and husband Elmer JANTZI/YANTZI and Doris JANTZI/YANTZI; four brothers, Mervin and wife Dorothy ROTH, M. Kenneth and wife Katherine ROTH, Wilmer " Bill" and wife Florence ROTH, Raymond and wife Audrey ROTH; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ray and Arvilla BAECHLER and Verda SWARTZENTRUBER.
