Peter grew
up in Winnipeg and Kingston before attending Trinity College
School and Trinity College, University of Toronto. Following
graduation, he embarked upon a career in publishing, which led
to him meeting Sharon. They had a loving and successful partnership
for 25 years, which saw them raise two daughters and build their
own communications and design firm. Peter's wit, strength and
devotion to his family and Friends will be greatly missed. A
memorial service will be held at Grace Church on-the-Hill, 300
Lonsdale Road on Thursday, December 15, 2005 at one o'clock,
followed by a private family interment in Mount Pleasant Cemetery.
Peter's family is grateful for the exceptional treatment and
care he received from the medical and nursing teams of Princess
Margaret
Hospital, particularly Dr. Ken

the rest of his Calgary family. Jim was a second generation Scottish
Canadian, born in Guelph, who joined the Ontario Provincial Police
in 1945 - serving in Niagara Falls and St. Catharines - before
being transferred to Toronto where he rose the top rank of Commissioner.
Friends and police officers alike referred to him as 'Big Jim',
not only because of his 6' 5' stature, but also because of his
social and affable presence at police and social gatherings.
Following his retirement, Jim organized the first Ontario Drinking
and Driving Counter Measures Program - with civic committees
in 53 Ontario municipalities. For the next ten years he served
as the Honorary Lt. Col. and Col. of the 11th Field Artillery
Regiment in Guelph. Prior to his 38 year police career, Jim served
three-and-a-half years as a Flight Engineer on a Lancaster bomber
with the Royal Canadian Air Force in the No. 405 1st Canadian
Bomber Squadron where he was wounded during his last sortie over
enemy territory. He was mentioned in dispatches for Devotion
to Duty. He was also awarded several Royal Canadian Air Force
medals as well as the French Volunteer Decoration, the Police
Efficiency Medal, and was named an Officer of the Order of St.
John, and C.D. Among highlights of his career, Jim was the founder
of the Ontario Provincial Police's Anti-Rackets Branch which
tackled white-collar crime, in particular the Great Canadian
Art Fraud of Group-of-Seven art forgeries, which brought him
into contact with famed artist A.J.
CASSON, who became a lifelong
friend. As Ontario's Director of Emergency Response, he was Senior
Officer at the Mississauga train derailment and evacuation (largest
peacetime evacuation in Canada). He was also Senior Officer investigating
the crash of an Air Canada DC8 in Woodbridge which killed 109
people, and he successfully negotiated the release of a family
kidnapped by a penitentiary escapee near London, Ontario. He
was the Canadian de1egate at Interpol H.Q. in France in 1968,
Chairman Ontario Chiefs of Police 1978-9, Chair, Ontario Traffic
Safety Council, 1980-3; and President, Royal Canadian Military
Institute. He served on the Board of Directors of Toronto Crime
Stoppers and a Life Member of Ontario, Canadian and International
Police Associations as well as the Royal Canadian Military Institute
and Toronto Press Club. Visitation 7-9 p.m. Sunday May 29th,
2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Monday May 30th at the Turner and Porter Butler
Chapel 4933 Dundas Street West (just west of Burnhamthorpe Rd.),

in Ottawa. Promoted to officer in the Wrens, she remained in
Ottawa until the end of the war. In 1946, she was invited to

of exciting travels, momentous events and interesting people.
The traditions that were so much a part of Beth's life are a

Visitations in Calgary will be on Wednesday, October 12, from
3 to 6 p.m., at McInnis and Holloway Funeral Home, Park Memorial
Chapel, 5008 Elbow Drive S.W. Will later rest at Brenan's Select
Community Funeral Home, 111 Paradise Row, Saint John, New Brunswick
with visitation on Friday, October 14 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and
7 to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be held at the Trinity Anglican
Church, Charlotte Street, Saint John, New Brunswick, on Saturday,
October 15, at 11am. Interment will follow at 1: 30 p.m., at Lower
Norton Anglican Church Cemetery, near Hampton, New Brunswick.
Remembrances may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Early morning fire at downtown highrise claims man's life
One man died in a highrise apartment fire early yesterday at
Wellesley and Church Sts.
Marion ROMANY, believed to be in his mid 30s, died alone in his
second-floor unit of an 88-unit building at 85 Wellesley St E.,
police said. An autopsy was scheduled for today to determine
the cause of death, they said.
The cause of the fire was not immediately determined, police
said.
The fire department, which arrived on the scene about 5: 45 a.m.,
said there was no smoke alarm in the unit
