600 attend boys' funeral
Brothers, 9, and 7, killed in swimming tragedy
By Huang NAILI,
Staff
Reporter
When the two little golden caskets covered with flowers were
lowered into the grave at noon yesterday, Truc
LE collapsed to
the ground.
She rested her head against a railing surrounding the grave and
reached out her right hand as if to touch her sons one more time.
Again and again, she called out the names of her two lost boys,
Larry and Calvin, her frail voice almost drowned out by sobbing
relatives and Friends.
The two Toronto brothers whose lives were claimed by a family
swimming tragedy last Sunday were put to rest side by side at
the Holy Cross Catholic Cemetery in Thornhill.
More than 600 people, some of them classmates and their families,
crowded into St. Jane Frances Church on Jane St. for the service,
held in Vietnamese and English.
Truc LE, 40, sank to her knees right in front of the grave and
prayed.
A family member said Truc was asking her sons to bless their
brother Anthony, the only survivor of the tragedy at Guelph's
Belwood Lake Conservation Area, who is recovering at the Hospital
for Sick Children.
Soan Thi NGUYEN, 78, the boys' grandmother who helped raise the
children, also threw herself onto the caskets. Family members
said she has been crying since the accident and has lost her
voice.
Larry, 9, died Sunday after he drowned in the lake. Calvin, 7,
died Monday night at Sick Kids. His major organs were donated
to help other children live.
Theresa NGUYEN, 9, and her brother, Anh Tuan
NGUYEN, 12, listened
to the mass in the foyer outside the overflowing chapel. She
and the LE brothers attended St. Jane Frances Catholic School.
"I'll always remember him as a funny guy," she said.
"We are making cards for the boys. We painted pictures like two
little boys in heaven and we wrote words like 'We miss you' and
'We hope you have a peaceful time in heaven.'"
Mimi CHAU, 45, cried quietly in a corner of the foyer. She doesn't
know the family but said she came out of respect.
"I'm one of the Vietnamese boat people who made a long way to
have a life here in Canada, just as the boys' father. I came
because I feel so sad for the family," said
CHAU.
She read the news in a local Vietnamese newspaper while at Sick
Kids on Tuesday, where her 15-year-old daughter was receiving
a kidney transplant.
Noting
Toronto's
Vietnamese community isn't that big,
CHAU said
"whenever something like this happens, everyone would go out
to help."
When the priests were sprinkling the two caskets with holy water,
Theresa TRAN, a Sunday school teacher at the church, cried out
with the boys' aunt, Anh
LE.
The three brothers attended
TRAN's
Vietnamese language class
every Sunday and June 5 was the last day before summer vacation.
"That Sunday was the last time I saw them. They are charming
boys," TRAN said.
TRAN was preparing a gift her students in the last class.
Because the three boys were always very active and occassionally
naughty, she teased them, saying they wouldn't receive anything.
"They all begged, 'Oh, Miss
TRAN, please, please give us a gift.
We'll be good. We promise to behave in September.'"
TRAN finally gave the three kids a book, a pencil and a little
bear.
At the cemetery, Sabrina
CARD and Wladimir
ROBLERO of Pickering,
were special guests of the family. They were at the lake when
tragedy struck."I was just fortunate to be there. I was able
to grab Anthony and take him to the shore so we could start (cardio-pulmonary
resuscitation)."
"We feel sorry, deeply sorry for the family,"
CARD said. "We
were busy doing cardio-pulmonary resuscitation on Anthony without
knowing what was happening to Larry and Calvin." They were later
found lying under water.
Yesterday,
CARD gave the boys' mother, a kiss on the cheek. "I
told her she has to stay strong for Anthony."
Anh LE, the boys' aunt who was supervising the children, "is
having a very hard time," said a family member.
"The family is learning the lesson the hard way. But we should
all learn and teach water safety to (kids).
"The government should bring back swimming lessons to schools,"
he said.
Another mass will be celebrated in Vietnamese at St. Jane Frances
Catholic Church at 5: 30 p.m. today.
The Vietnamese community has set up a trust fund for the family
at a Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce branch, transit number
05522, account 2681439. Tax receipts are available.
