TAILOR/TAYLOR, Katherine " Kate" Jean, B.A. (Queen's,) B.Com. (Guelph)
On Wednesday, November 30, 2005, a life too short, but one filled with a fierce enthusiasm for living, came to an end. Kate died at home in the arms of her beloved husband Michael AZULAY, surrounded by her loving family. Her passing will leave an unspeakable void in the hearts and lives of her cherished children, Isaac, Naomi and Isabelle, her parents Sandra and Don TAILOR/TAYLOR of Kingston, her sister and best friend Susan TAILOR/TAYLOR and husband Rob MURPHY of Toronto, her loved brother Geoff TAILOR/TAYLOR and his wife Meriel of Colebrook, Ontario. She will also be greatly missed by her mother-in-law Jean AZULAY of Dunrobin, Ontario and all of Michael's brothers and sisters and their spouses - Kim, Karen, Gina MULVIE and John WATSON, Tracy and Luigi PORCARI, Curtis and Elaine and Tara and Mark RIGLEY. Kate also leaves 18 nieces and nephews. Kate was a tremendously positive force in every facet of life. She was passionate in life as a wife, as a mother and as a friend. She was incredibly beautiful, bright, strong-willed, witty, soft and warm. We are better people today, more complete, because Kate was integral and an influential part of our lives. We will miss her terribly - we already do. During times of darkness, great light and support were provided by a tremendous network of Friends, neighbours, colleagues, everyone at Anthem and most importantly Kate's healthcare team. Special thanks to Doctors Stephanie LAFRAMBOISE, Ian QUIRT, Helen PYLE, Lynn BENJAMIN and to her palliative care nurse specialist Sharilee COX- ARSNEAULT. A private family service will be held in Kate's honour with a celebration of life to follow in the new year for many people whose lives she touched. In lieu of flowers, we respectfully request donations to Wellspring of Halton Peel or to the Canadian Cancer Society.

PORTEOUS, James Barry
On Wednesday, April 6, 2005 in Kingston in his 89th year, with family at his side. Happily married to Adele ROBERTON since June 1948, he was the proud father and father-in-law of Clare and Perry, James and Kathleen, and Patricia and was pleased to be the grandfather of Charity and Christopher SAFFORD, Andrew and Alexa PORTEOUS and Baillie CARD. Brother of Janet L. McDOUGALL of Knowlton, Québec
Born in Toronto in 1917, Barry moved with his family to Montreal. Educated at Selwyn House School, he graduated from McGill University, B.Comm. '38 and joined the firm of Creak, Cushing and Hodgson, Chartered Accountants. At the outbreak of war, he joined the Royal Canadian Artillery and completed his officers' training in Kingston in the spring of 1940. He joined 1st Canadian Division Artillery in England in the summer of 1940. Trained in Combined Operations, he took part as a Forward Observation Officer for Naval Shore Fire in the Sicily and Italy landings, summer 1943 and remained with 1st Canadian Division Artillery. He was posted to 3rd Canadian Infantry Brigade Tactical Headquarters, November 1943, and promoted to General Service Officer III in April 1944. Barry completed Camberley Staff course (U.K.) in the late fall of 1944 and returned to various active postings in northwestern Europe. He came home in July 1945 after 65 months of continuous active service overseas, retaining the rank of Captain. He joined Greenshields, Hodgson, Racine Ltd., wholesale dry goods merchants in Old Montreal and was President and Chief Executive Officer from 1961-1971. Barry was also President of the Montreal Board of Trade from 1969-1970 and participated in several charitable ventures in addition to a successful business career. He sold his interest in Greenshields, Hodgson, Racine Ltd. in 1971 and began business as an independent Consultant to Management. In the spring of 1982 the family moved to Kingston, Ontario where he joined the Fort Frontenac Officer's Mess, the Kingston Gunners, Canadian Railroad Historical Association, the Kingston Yacht Club and founded the Kingston and Area Condominium Association.
Barry became interested in family geneology, organized the Porteous Associates International, designed the Porteous tartan, and was author of "The Porteous Story", being named Laird Elect in 1985. He supervised construction of the Porteous Memorial in Cairn on Hawkshaw Castle site near Tweedsmuir on the Scottish borders, and was Master of Ceremonies there for international reunions in 1990 and 1995. He retired from business life in 1997 to enjoy his family and Friends.
Recently in Edinburgh, Scotland, piper Jim McCourt, Cameron Highlanders, at the request of Tam Porteous, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, composed a catchy 6/8 march entitled "Captain James Barry Porteous, Royal Canadian Artillery" in appreciation of Barry's major contributions to the Porteous Associates and to commemorate his retirement as Laird Elect on March 29, 2003. A further honour took place on December 25, 2003 when the Directors elected Barry as first Honorary Laird for his unremitting efforts on behalf of the Porteous Associates. This was accompanied by a gift of a decanter and two scotch glasses of Edinburgh crystal each bearing the Porteous Cairn logo, and the decanter an inscription as to its significance. A fitting tribute and much appreciated.
In keeping with Barry's wishes, a private service was held in Kingston, followed by cremation and inurnment at Cataraqui Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or to the charity of your choice in Mr. PORTEOUS' memory.

Robert METCALFE, Soldier, Salesman and Volunteer: 1915-2005
British Army officer survived Dunkirk, the Bismarck and Rommel to end up engraved on Canada's $10 bill
By Randy RAY, Special to The Globe and Mail, Saturday, May 7, 2005, Page S9
Ottawa -- Second World War Veteran Bob METCALFE is gone but, every day, his legacy touches the lives of millions of Canadians, though most never know it.
We all know him: He is the tall soldier with the blue beret and blazer depicted on the back of the Canadian $10 bill under the words "in service of peace." How his image made it onto the bill remains a mystery to his family.
"He was contacted by someone from the government in the late 1990s who said they wanted him brought to downtown Ottawa for a photo opportunity," recalls his daughter Sue METCALFE of Toronto. "He was not told what it was for, just that they wanted a picture of a veteran... He had no idea he would be on the bill."
Those who knew Mr. METCALFE say his legacy will live on for reasons that go far beyond his likeness on Canada's ten-spot.
The son of a Yorkshire lumberman and grain miller, he was a proud soldier, an author, a forward-looking municipal politician, and a man of strong ethics and high standards for civility.
Raised in Yorkshire, he joined the British Army with war on the horizon. He graduated from Sandhurst military academy to begin a military career that would be the basis for his book No Time for Dreams: A Soldier's Six-Year Journey Through World War 2, which was written when he was 80. A member of the famed Green Howards, he was among the 400,000 members of the British Expeditionary Force who faced the new German approach to warfare, the Blitzkrieg. He was near the Canadian First World War memorial at Vimy Ridge when the Allied retreat began. On May 27, 1940, "a day I shall never forget," he wrote, heavy mortar fire erupted. Applying a field dressing to a wounded comrade, Mr. METCALFE was hit in the legs by shrapnel. Later, a German tank opened fire on his ambulance, then, miraculously, ceased fire. He survived the mass evacuation from Dunkirk on the H.M.S. Grenade, yet saw two of its sister ships torpedoed.
Once recovered from his wounds, he went on to fight in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. He was chased by the German battleship the Bismarck, went around the Cape of Good Hope and ended up in the Middle East, serving in Operation Desert Fox under the command of General Bernard Law Montgomery where he developed great respect and appreciation for German Field Marshal Irwin Rommel.
In Italy, he met and married his wife, Lieutenant Helen PORTER, a physical therapist with a Canadian hospital. They were married twice on October 28, 1944 -- once in the morning by the mayor of a small Italian town and again in the afternoon by a British Army padre. Mr. METCALFE ended the war a major attached to the U.S. army in France.
In 1948, the METCALFEs settled in the Chatham, Ontario, area where he sold steel and hardware until his retirement. Along the way, he served as reeve of Wallaceburg, Ontario, became a warden of Kent County and served on the Wallaceburg Industrial Commission where he was instrumental in attracting industry to the area. He also helped establish a Wallaceburg group home.
Yet he never forgot his fellow veterans. On the 30th, 40th and 50th anniversaries of D-Day he and his wife organized tours to Europe, not forgetting Sicily and Italy. In 1977, Mr. METCALFE received the Queen's Jubilee Medal. About 20 years ago, the couple moved to Ottawa to be near family and became involved in service work, often visiting schools to share their knowledge.
Bob METCALFE was born in Richmond, Yorkshire, England on January 25, 1915. He died of a heart attack in Ottawa on April 6, 2005. He was 90. He is survived by his wife Helen and daughters Sue and Sharon.
