STEVENSON, Charles A., P.Eng.
Born in Saint John's, Newfoundland on May 1st, 1933; passed away peacefully in Bowmanville on December 13, 2005. Charles A. STEVENSON moved to Toronto with his family at the age of ten. Following graduation from the University of Toronto with a degree in Civil Engineering, Charlie STEVENSON was employed by McNamara Construction during construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway in the late 1950's. He then transferred to their engineering division where he quickly rose to the position of Engineering Manager, responsible for all of the engineering work undertaken by one of the largest consulting engineering firms of the day. Mr. STEVENSON left McNamara to become a founding partner of SHAL Consulting Engineers. Clients included Public Works Canada, Transport Canada, National Harbours Board and many private sector corporations. The first significant overseas project was the Rodney Bay Development in St. Lucia. This involved creating a new inland lagoon and tourism development in what originally was a mosquito infested area. Next in the Caribbean was a feasibility study, final design and construction of the Deep Water Harbour Extension for the Port of Bridgetown, Barbados. This led to many other significant projects including the Montego Bay, Jamaica Coastal Development Project, for which his firm received an Award of Merit from the Association of Consulting Engineers of Canada; a Container Terminal in New York Harbour and bulk marine terminals in St. Vincent and Haiti and the design of the Dhow Harbour in Kuwait which created over 10 kilometres of new docking facilities for local coastal vessels. In 1980, the firm designed and supervised the construction of the Fish Landing Terminal in Nassau, commencing a period of continuous involvement in marine works and waterfront development in the Bahamas. During the same period the firm was selected by Transport Canada to carry out the Ontario Ports Study which established the future needs for port facilities throughout the Great Lakes. The growth of cruising in the Caribbean led to SHAL becoming deeply involved in cruise berths and passenger terminals throughout the Caribbean. Significant projects included the expansion of Nassau Harbour, new cruise berths at two of the Bahamas Family Islands, 1800 feet of coastal vessel docks in Nassau and a cruise ship pier in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. In 1993, Mr. STEVENSON was involved with the Government of Turks and Caicos Islands in carrying out a study to develop an island-wide Marine Transportation Masterplan and to prepare the design and documents for the construction of new port facilities. Over a career spanning more than 40 years of professional practise, Charlie STEVENSON was responsible for the successful execution of marine engineering projects in Canada and sixteen other countries, many of them developing nations which derived considerable benefit from Mr. STEVENSON's professional expertise. He is survived by his loving family: wife Barbara, daughter Lynne and sons Scott and Craig; in-laws Terry, Lisa, Ann and seven grandchildren. His other loved ones include sister Lavinia (Sheldon) and family, sister-in-law Gerry PIESLEY and family and Barb's brothers John (Judy), Bruce (Mary) and their families. We mustn't forget his beloved dog "Niki". Private family service will be held on Saturday, December 17, 2005 at the W.C. Town Funeral Chapel, 110 Dundas St. E., Whitby, Ontario L1N 2H7 between noon and 2: 00 p.m. A "gathering" of Friends will be held between 3: 00 and 5:00 p.m. at 115 Saint John's St. W. in Whitby. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Juvenile Diabetes Society would be appreciated by the family.
