PETRONE, Serafina " Penny"
Serafina (Penny) PETRONE, A.T.C.M., B.A., M.A., Ph.D., Order of Ontario died unexpectedly on Monday August 22nd, 2005 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Daughter of the late Luisa SISCO and Liugi PETRONE, Dr. PETRONE was born and raised in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay.) She attended St. Joseph's School and the Port Arthur Collegiate Institute where she won the first Canadian Federation of University Women(Canadian Federation of University Women) scholarship given to an outstanding Grade 13 female student in the Lakehead. After graduating from Grade 13, Penny attended the North Bay Norman School and began, at the age of eighteen, a long and productive teaching career which encompassed the elementary, secondary, teachers' college and university levels. Beginning in the one room rural schools of the Onion Lake Road, and Five Mile, Dr. PETRONE moved on to urban elementary in Port Arthur and Windsor, Ontario and then to secondary in Chapleau, Parry Sound, Thunder Bay, Soest, Germany, and Gros-tenquin (#3 Fighter Wing) France with the Dept. of National Defence. After returning to Hillcrest High School in Thunder Bay in 1958, she was offered a teaching post in the newly-opened Lakehead Teachers' College. In 1963 she was seconded to the Dept. of External Aid to teach at Iganga Teachers' College in Uganda, East Africa. In 1965 she was transferred to Ottawa Teachers' College. A bout of breast cancer forced her to return to Lakehead Teachers' College in 1968. But she managed to turn a tragic situation into a positive life experience and continued her teaching and academic upgrading, receiving her Doctorate in English Literature from the University of Alberta. After a two year residence in Edmonton, she resumed her teaching duties at Lakehead University until her retirement. During this time she was an indefatigable researcher and lecturer, writing articles for a number of reference books as well as presenting conference papers and press and broadcast interviews in Canada and abroad. Her research on the Canadian Poet, Isabella Valancy Crawford resulted in two books The Selected Short Stories of Isabella Valancy Crawford and The Fairy Tales of Isabella Valancy Crawford. They were the first books to make Crawford's prose works publicly accessible. Dr. PETRONE also pioneered the critical study of aboriginal literature in Canada with her landmark books First People, First Voices, and Northern Voices. Her Native Literature in Canada was the first book-length history of the literature of Canada's First Peoples. For this ground-breaking research, Dr. PETRONE was made an honorary Indian Chief by the Gull Bay Ojibwa and gained international recognition. After her retirement from Lakehead University, Dr. PETRONE's scholarly focus shifted to the study of her Italian heritage. Anxious to promote Italian culture, in January 1995, she was instrumental in forming 'I Literati', a local reading group which focused on Italy's cultural heritage in the fields of literature, art, music, history and film as well as on the Italian immigrant experience in North America. She also wrote two memoirs, Breaking the Mould and Embracing Serafina. Her book Breaking the Mould was translated into Italian and launched at the University of Rome, La Sapienza in July, 2005. Dr. PETRONE was a lover of the arts and served on the Boards of Magnus Theatre and the Thunder Bay Regional Arts Council. She also served on the Canada Council and the Ontario Arts Council. Over the years she held various executive offices in teachers' organizations and in the Canadian Federation of University Women. She traveled extensively and was a popular platform speaker to numerous community groups in Thunder Bay and district. During her lifetime Dr. PETRONE received many honours and awards: The Corporation of the City of Thunder Bay Citizens of Exceptional Achievement Awards (Culture) in 1981, 1984, and 1989, 'L'ordine d'onore' from the National Congress of Italian Canadians (1994) the 'Order of Ontario' (1992); Canada 124 Medal (1992); Honorary Citizen of Piane Crate (1997); the Golden Jubilee Medal (2002) the F.G. Bressani Literary Award (2002); the Kouhi award for 'her outstanding contribution to writing in Northwestern Ontario' (May 2004.) Dr. PETRONE was also the proud recipient of Lakehead University's first 'Distinguished Teacher' Award in 1989 and the Ontario Confederation of University Faculty Associations teaching award (1988). She cherished the knowledge that she was remembered fondly by generations of students as an outstanding teacher. Dr. Penny PETRONE is survived by her brother, Alfred (Celina) in Thunder Bay, Ontario; her sister, Rita McCALL (Lawrence) in Oakville, Ontario. A brother Frank predeceased her on March 16, 1988 as well as her sister Mary on July 14, 2004. Left to mourn are many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. Dedicated teacher, author, role model and mentor, sister, aunt, friend, Penny PETRONE enriched the lives of all who knew her. She was a life-long learner who lived a full life, brimming with curiosity and discovery. She has left to those who mourn her death, the legacy of her great courage, her deep and abiding faith in God, her generosity, vivacity and passion for learning. Funeral Mass for the late Dr. PETRONE was held on Saturday, August 27th, 2005 at 9: 30 a.m. in St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church, Thunder Bay, Ontario. Entombment followed in Our Lady of Charity Mausoleum, St. Andrew's Catholic Cemetery. Visitation for family and Friends was held on Friday evening from 8: 30 p.m. on. With Vigil Prayers being offered at 9: 30 p.m. the same evening at St. Anthony's Roman Catholic Church. As expressions of sympathy, donations may be made in Penny's memory to Magnus Theatre of Thunder Bay.

STEWARD/STEWART/STUART, John Patrick Connell (September 11th, 1932-June 17th, T'was time to lay your burden down and free your noble spirit to soar with the birds once more. Our dearly beloved John passed away on Friday, June 17th. John was a remarkable man who battled his extremely rare cancer for two years with his quiet grace and dignity. John accomplished many dreams in his life, and lived his years to the fullest. He was a gentle passionate man who embraced challenges in all aspects of his life and found joi de vivre in them all. John received his P.Eng. and M.B.A. from the University of Toronto and his M.P.A. from York, and followed this by a career in the field he enjoyed so much. John was blessed with his wonderful parents Madge and Jack (predeceased), with his wife Jeanne with whom he shared his dreams, was father to beloved children Kelly and husband Alf IVANY, and to Sean, and father for Russ COOPER and his partner Kim, and Robert COOPER and his wife Vicki, and John-Dad to Laura and Connie. To add to John's joy were his delightful grandchildren Amanda, Michael, Lisa, Taylor, Megan and Bobby. To all those who knew John, family and Friends, he will always be remembered as the man he was: one of warmth, caring, eclectic, erudite, witty and widespread knowledge. We wish to give special thanks to his wonderful Dr. Joe MIKHAEL of the Myeloma Clinic, Princess Margaret Hospital, and to Dr. CHIN and the Oncology and Palliative Care nurses at Lakeridge Oshawa, and to Dr. PETROSONIAK, and all of the support groups that cared for John in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Beloved wife of Ivan, loving mother of Ana; survived by her father Branko DOMITROVIC, brother George DOMITROVIC; sisters Ana BORAS and Dorothy PETRUSA, sister-in-law Mary LOPAC, brother-in-law Joe BRINJAK; predeceased by her mother Ana DOMITROVIC. She will always be lovingly remembered as a devout Catholic, who was extremely family oriented and proud of her Croatian heritage. She will be lovingly missed by her many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Mary is survived by many family and Friends both in Canada and Croatia.

Passed away suddenly at Credit Valley Hospital on June 17, 2005 at the age of 78. Beloved husband and best friend of Rose for 50 years. Loving father of Wayne (Laura), Karen (Brian). Dear Grandpa of Moriah, Jacqueline, Alexander, Matthew and Jennifer. Predeceased by his brothers Nick and John. Lovingly remembered by his sister Mary, Aunt Helen, cousins Stella and Jenny. Also lovingly remembered by his nieces and nephews. A compassionate man, Michael touched the lives of many family and Friends. He proudly served his country during the Second World War in the Royal Canadian Navy and as a dedicated peacekeeper in several foreign postings. Loved father to son James, daughter Judy and son-in-law Paul PETERSON. Brother to Irene and Ray JOHNSON, Joan▼ and Al MARTIN, and Daphne and the late Ivan HUTTON. Special▼ brother-in-law to Floyd DEITER and uncle to many nephews and nieces. Bob attended the University of Western Ontario and served as a Flying Officer in the Royal Canadian Air Force during World War 2. Bob worked for 38 years for Ontario Hydro as Management Services Consultant. God lovingly released Bob from the ravages of Lewy Bodies Disease and Parkinson's Syndrome which he accepted with patience and dignity for so many years. Resting at Chapel Ridge Funeral Home, 8911 Woodbine Avenue (3 lights north of Hwy 7), Markham (905) 305-8508. VAN DE KAMER, Jenny Henriette (née HOOGENDYK)
Born in 1909, in Archangel, Russia, and passed away from this world, after a long and fruitful life, to be at peace with her beloved husband, Bernard VAN DE KAMER (1996,) and their dear daughter Joan. Sadly missed and dearly loved mother of Peter and his wife Pamela (Paris), Paul and his wife Barbara (Kitchener), John and his wife Ann (Fergus,) Ellen and her husband Ray PETERS (Kingston,) and Jenny and her husband Wayne HUCK (Guelph.) Jenny is survived by fifteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. She was the dear sister of Erica McLAY, Marguerite COATES, and Alma PETTINGER. Jenny was predeceased by here sister Edith MISENER and by her brothers Warren, William, and Alexander.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Jenny's life will be held at Forest Hill United Church, 121 Westmount Rd. E., Kitchener, on Saturday, July 9, 2005, at 11 a.m., the Reverend Jim McKNIGHT officiating. As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Canadian Cancer Society, to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Ontario, or to the charity of one's choice would be appreciated by the family. Sincere thanks to the staff at Winston Park where Jenny resided from 1996 to 2004, and to the staff in Pine Wing, Lanark Heights Long Term Care for all their loving patience and tender care.
