Ottawa man faces charges in deaths of parents, sister
Canadian Press, Monday, March 14, 2005 Page A7
Ottawa -- Police responding to a call for help from a frantic
and screaming woman discovered her body and the bodies of her
parents in an east-end home yesterday. The couple's son was arrested
and is expected to be charged.
Gerald MAXHELEAU, 66, his wife
Louise
MAXHELEAU, 60, and their
daughter Michelle
MAXHELEAU, 25, were all found stabbed to death
on the main floor of the house, police said.
Police expect to charge the
MAXHELEAU's 30-year-old son, Daniel,
with three counts of first-degree murder today, Ottawa Police
Staff-Sergeant Randy Whisker told the Ottawa Citizen.
Officers raced to the comfortable home in a tranquil suburb around
9 a.m. after receiving a frantic 911 call from a woman screaming
and crying for help.
A blood-covered man who rambled on about a bizarre plot against
him met police at the door, the Ottawa Sun reported.
Inside, police found the daughter in the foyer, dead from stab
wounds with a phone next to her. Her parents were discovered
face down in pools of blood on the kitchen floor, the newspaper
said.
"There were signs of violence on the bodies of the victims,"
said Staff-Sergeant Monique
ACKLAND, an Ottawa Police spokeswoman.
Police said the son was treated for minor cuts at hospital and
then was taken to an Ottawa police station for questioning.
"There is a lot of work to do to put together what exactly happened,"
Staff-Sgt.
WHISKER said. "It will likely take us a couple of
days to process the crime scene."
A weapon believed to have been used in the killings was recovered
and a team of forensic officers will collect evidence at the
house for the next couple of days.
Staff-Sgt.
ACKLAND said the accused has had previous contact
with police, but not of a criminal nature.
The Sun reported that police were called to the house last year
when a man threatened to jump out a window. Depressed over losing
his job and unable to sleep, the man voluntarily admitted himself
to a psychiatric unit at a local hospital.
A relative in Toronto said the couple's surviving daughters are
in a state of shock.
"It's too painful to be able to speak about it," Elyse
MAXHELEAU
said.
Neighbour Jean
PERLEY said the
MAXHELEAU family has lived in
the house for at least 20 years.
Neighbours said the couple had three daughters: Michelle, who
was the youngest; Susan, who lives in Montreal; and Marie-Helen,
who lives in nearby Hull, Quebec
Marie-Helen went to visit her parents on Sunday afternoon but
arrived to find police cruisers blocking the street.
Few neighbours knew the couple had a son until he moved in with
them in the last couple of weeks.

ENDICOTT,

Austin (1926-2005)
Born in Chongqing, China, the eldest
son of missionaries James
and Mary ENDICOTT, he liked to point out he was "third generation
Chinese." Responsible for many hijinks at the Canadian School
in Chengtu. After serving in the Royal Air Force overseas in
1944-45, he graduated a Silver Medalist from Victoria College
and from Osgoode Hall Law School.
An "unrepentant premature anti-fascist," he early joined labour
and peace campaigns and supported the Chinese revolutionary cause.
He practiced corporate-commercial law, also lending his talents
to progressive causes: June Marks' campaign against blockbusting
in Ward 2; Alderman Dan Heap's fight against lead poisoning
and for strikers at Texpack and Artistic Woodworking. He supported
Madeleine Parent and Kent Rowley in their struggle for Canadian
unions and Pauline Julienne and Pierre Godin for justice for
Quebec. He was most proud of changes in immigration process as
a result of the Dowhopaluk case.
In 1958 he organized a lawyers' delegation to China, meeting
with Chou-En-Lai. He supported international organizations of
jurists promoting the Geneva Agreement and advancement of the
rule of law. He debated Red Guards at Baida in 1966. His Comportex
Trading led the way in opening Canada-China trade in the 1970s,
as well as trade with Cuba. He supported the Toronto Chinese
Canadian Welfare Association and was a founding member of the
Canadian China (Friendship) Society of Toronto in 1971. He helped
establish North Carolina Press which contributed to the development
of Canadian publishing.
Despite Parkinson's disease, he accompanied wife Caroline helping

PERRÉARD o@ca.on.york_county.toronto.globe_and_mail 2005-04-25 published
BUTLER,
Frank
On April 21, 2005 at Sunnybrook Hospital, Toronto, in his 90th
year. Predeceased by his second wife, Jean, in 2003 and by his
first wife, Elizabeth "Betty," in 1973. Brother to Suzanne
PERRÉARD
and Angela
BUTLER, both of Geneva, Switzerland, and Charlotte
VIDAL
(Federico) of Cochiti Lake, New Mexico; brother-in-law
to Scott BOWERBANK of Victoria, British Columbia. Father to Veronica
BUTLER of Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, Michael
BUTLER
(Diana) and
Virginia BUTLER, both of Victoria, British Columbia. Grandfather
to Erica HOUSE
(Michael
FRASER) of Toronto, Jennifer
BUTLER and
Simon BUTLER, both of Vancouver, British Columbia. Great-grandfather
to Tessa FRASER of Toronto. He will be greatly missed by his
family and by his many Friends.
Frank was born on June 13, 1915 in Griffithstown, United Kingdom.
He was educated at Sherborne School in England and Trinity College,
Toronto, after the family emigrated to Canada. Frank spent most
of his career with Shell Canada Ltd., where he held positions
of increasing responsibility in Toronto and Montreal until his
retirement in 1975. During the Second World War, he served as
a pilot in the Royal Canadian Air Force, rising to the rank of
Squadron Leader. Flying a Hudson bomber from Royal Canadian Air
Force bases in the Maritimes, he helped protect Atlantic convoys
from enemy submarines. He recalled these years as being the best
in his life, particularly as they were also the early years of
a very happy marriage to Betty, which began in 1940. Especially
happy times with Betty and the children followed construction
of a family cottage on Lake Muskoka in the 1960s. After Betty's
untimely death, he married Jean McKinley
TOOMBS in 1974, beginning
a close partnership which lasted almost thirty years. This partnership
extended to the business world: after Frank left Shell, they
both managed the Canadian operations of the Forty Plus human
resources consulting group, which evolved into the Life Management
Centre.
Frank's outlook on life was that of the indefatigable optimist
and enthusiast. These attributes, combined with a high degree
of courage, enabled him stoically to endure his steadily increasing
infirmities over the past nine years, including Parkinson's disease.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Frank's companion,
Andrew KERZNER, who over the past two and a half years enabled
Frank to enjoy a wide range of worthwhile experiences despite
his disabilities. The staff of Briton House are also to be commended
for their caring attention during this time.
A memorial service for Frank will be held at St Clement's Anglican
Church, 59 Briar Hill Avenue, on May 6 at 11 a.m. In lieu of
flowers, donations can be made to the Parkinson Society of Canada.
