It is with profound sadness and a heavy heart that Mary (nee KNAPIK) announces the passing in Collingwood, of Ian, her cherished and much loved husband of 43 years, loving and very proud father to Joanne McGOWAN and her husband Paul of Ajax, Terri COOK and her husband Tom of Toronto, Dianne LAMB and her husband Gary of Milton, very proud and respected grandpa to Melissa and Lindsay McGOWAN and brother-in-law to Sister Agnes KNAPIK, O.S.B., of Warren, Ohio. Ian was the son of the late John and Mee Douglas, son-in-law of the late Steve and Mary KNAPIK and brother-in-law of the late Anne and Ivan PELKOVICH. Ian was diagnosed in July 2003 with pleural space cancer (mesothefioma) from his exposure to asbestos in the 1950s and always maintained a positive outlook with optimism, courage and dignity throughout his illness, being an inspiration to us all. Born February 3rd, 1923, passed on peacefully October 18th, 2005, after a brave struggle with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. To the very end he was a devoted husband to Esme BALL, father and friend to Christopher BALL and Darlene PELL, and loving grandfather to Megan BALL. Born in Northern England he was a Spitfire Pilot in World War 2, and moved to Georgetown, Ontario after the war to start a new life with his wife. There he worked on the Avro Arrow project and the Avro Hovercar project, moving to New Zealand when Avro closed. He returned to Georgetown in 1966 where he lived until moving to Langley, British Columbia in 2003 to be with his family.
He will be most remembered for his quick wit and good humour, marvelous speeches, master gardening, and as a steadfast friend. He is survived by his Stepmother Phyllis, his wife Esme, his son Christopher, his daughter in law Darlene and their daughter Megan.
He will be long remembered by all who loved and knew him.
There will be no service, at his request, and in lieu of flowers donations will be gratefully received by the A.L.S. Society of Canada or the charity of your choice.

A life long resident of London, Ken served in the Royal Canadian Navy as one of Canada's first submariners on the H.M.S. Amphian. Ken retired from Labatt Breweries after 30 years of service. He was an Amateur Boxing Coach at the Memorial Boys and Girls Club and at East London Boxing Club for more than 25 years. He reached National Coach status representing Canada at numerous international events. In his retirement, Ken enjoyed travelling, camping, "puttering around", and his Friendship with Bill W. Patrick will be greatly missed by his family, Deborah Smith VERNON, his wife of fifty years, children Catherine Harcourt MARTIN, Geoffrey William Harcourt VERNON, Susan▼ Elizabeth▼ Vernon▼ PELLERIN, their spouses/partners Robert MARTIN, Johnny▼ BRYAN, and Denis PELLERIN, and grandchildren Richard, Taylor and Scott MARTIN, Caitlin▼ and Julia VERNON, and Sarah and Lucie PELLERIN.
Born to Arthur Arundel Harcourt VERNON and Margaret Cayley Harcourt VERNON on November 15, 1926, Patrick attended Jarvis Collegiate, Trinity College School, Trinity College, and Osgoode Hall Law School, becoming a corporate lawyer and a partner at McCarthy Tétrault. In 1981 Patrick was called to the Bar of Alberta, and took up residence in Calgary. He became the managing partner of a new law firm, Black and Company, which ultimately became part of McCarthy Tétrault, the national law firm.
Patrick was the consummate community service advocate and volunteered his time and talents to the organizations in which he believed. He was a Life Governor of Trinity College School, a volunteer worker and chief fundraiser for the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada, and served on a number of charitable foundations and boards. In 1995 he was appointed for four years to the Ontario Securities Commission, and from 2001 to the present, served as a director of the Ontario Pension Board. In September 2004, Patrick received the honorary degree, Doctor of Sacred Letters at Trinity College, Toronto, in recognition of his service to the School, the Church and the community.
An avid historian, Patrick published two books, The Bells of Old York, which outlines the change-ringing bells, the installation of which he co-ordinated, at The Cathedral Church of St. James, and Ladywood, a compilation of diaries relating to the 100-year history of the Vernon summer residence on Lake Simcoe. Patrick enjoyed travelling, fishing, skiing, playing billiards, card games and tennis with family and Friends. He had conservation and other projects on the go at his and Debby's beloved 'Hilltop House' near Uxbridge, Ontario, and was always happy to spend 'grandfather time' with his seven grandchildren.
A service to celebrate Patrick's life will be held at 11 a.m., Thursday, August 11, 2005 at The Cathedral Church of St. James, 65 Church Street (at King St. E.).

SMITH, William " Bill"
Age 64, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 18th, 2005 at Humber River Memorial Hospital Church Site. He worked at Olympia Tile for eighteen years and at Rothman's for over twenty years. Born in Toronto he was the son of the late Jeannette (HOULE) SMITH. He was married to Kilda Marie (MacDONALD) for 41 years and they have three beautiful children: daughter Barbara ROGERS (Don) and Angela BARUDI (Dan,) and son Paul (Mariline.) He has seven grandchildren whom he loved dearly: Brandon, Andrew, Mia, and Michael ROGERS, Ashley SMITH, and Nicholas and Samantha BARUDI. He is survived by two sisters Margaret PIQUETTE (Urbain) and Jeannette VILLENEUVE (Conrad - deceased,) and one brother Hugh (Donna). He also has many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his sisters Blanche SMITH and Florence PELLERIN. Bill will be loved and missed by all of his family and Friends and will be remembered in our hearts as a man of strength and courage and as an inspiration to us all. Friends may visit at the Jerrett Funeral Home, 6191 Yonge St. (2 lights south of Steeles Ave.) on Tuesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral Mass will take place at St. Paschal Baylon Church, 92 Steeles Ave. W. on Wednesday at 9: 30 a.m. Cremation will take place after the service with interment in Holy Cross Cemetery at a later date.
