YODZIS,
Peter▼
Paul▼
Professor Emeritus of Theoretical Ecology.
It is with great sadness that the family of Peter
YODZIS announces
that Peter passed away peacefully on Easter Monday the 28th of
March, 2005 in Guelph, Ontario with his wife Susan, and sons
Hans and Michael by his side.
When he was diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, or
Lou Gehrig's Disease, Peter faced each challenge with integrity
and courage. Peter celebrated life every day by sharing his love
of music, art, history and his love of good food with his family
and Friends. After retiring, Peter continued to work on his research
until the end of his life. He was an inspiration to us all. His
generous spirit, patience, understanding and intellectual insights
shall be missed by his family, Friends, colleagues and students.
Peter was a Professor of Theoretical Ecology, in the Department
of Zoology, at the University of Guelph for 25 years. In recognition
of his contributions to science, the University of Guelph honoured
Peter with the first annual Peter Yodzis Colloquium in 2004,
which brought together world renowned scientists.
Peter's undergraduate degree was in Theoretical Physics from
Duke University and he received his PhD in Mathematical Physics
from the University of New Mexico. After two years of postdoctural
work at the Institute of Physics in Dublin, Ireland and
in Hamburg,
Germany, Peter joined the Institute for Theoretical Physics in
Bern, Switzerland. While he was in Switzerland, he became interested
in Theoretical Ecology. He entered this field because he truly
wanted to change the world. Thirty years later, his insights
and ideas have helped us to better understand the world in which
we live, and will continue to cast its' light for many years
to come.
Peter was a gentle and loving husband to Susan. He was predeceased
by his first wife, Karin
HENKE. He was a loving father to Hans
and Michael. Peter was the
son of Florence
YODZIS, and the late
Peter YODZIS of Maryland. He was the dear brother of Melanie
