CLARK
--In loving memory of our dear Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Eleanor
CLARK,
who passed away on January 11, 2004.
God looked around his garden and
He found an empty place
He then looked down upon the earth
And saw your tired face.
He put his arms around you
And lifted you to rest,
God's garden must be beautiful
He always takes the best.
He knew that you were suffering,
He knew you were in pain,
He knew that you would never
Get well on earth again.
He saw that the road was getting rough,
And the hills were hard to climb,
So He closed your weary eyelids
And whispered, "Peace Be Thine."
It broke our hearts to lose you,
But you didn't go alone
For part of us went with you
The day God called you home.
Always loved and sadly missed by children Allen

Homicide No. 13
By Kelly PEDRO,
Free
Press
Crime
Reporter
A Toronto-area man faces a second-degree murder charge after
one man was shot to death and another injured in a pub parking
lot early yesterday.
Dwayne PITTER, 23, of Vaughan, was charged yesterday with second-degree
murder and attempted murder in connection with London's record
13th homicide.
PITTER is to appear in a London court today.
Joshua Kenneth
WILLIAMS, 22, of the London area, was shot in
the torso outside the Roxbury Pub and Grill at 1165 Oxford St.
E. at 2: 20 a.m.
He died later.
Three people, including
PITTER, were taken into custody. The
other two were released, police said last night.
Detectives scoured the lot yesterday as they wrestled with a
skyrocketing number of homicides this year.
Neighbours said they saw a crowd leave the bar about 2: 30 a.m.,
then heard screaming.
"I heard the gunshots and I saw someone go down. I thought it
was firecrackers," said a woman who was standing outside the
Roxbury near a variety store at the time. She did want to give
her name.
"I heard two shots and I ran into the (variety) store."
Police said a dispute outside the bar led to the shooting.
Police and paramedics arrived to find
WILLIAMS seriously hurt
and another man shot in the arm. The second man was treated and
released from hospital.
Police have recovered a handgun and are not looking for any more
weapons, said Det. Andrew
WHITFORD.
It's unclear whether
WILLIAMS, the injured man and the three
people in custody had just left the Roxbury when the shooting
happened, WHITFORD said.
But there were about 40 people in the parking lot when a disagreement
broke out, he said. Police are still probing the cause of the
dispute.
WHITFORD said many witnesses: have come forward and bar staff
have co-operated.
Roxbury staff declined comment yesterday.
Neighbours have complained of fights and loud noise after the
bar's closing time.
"It's scary," said Brenda
PARSONS, who lives in a nearby townhouse
complex. "You don't need television to live in this neighbourhood.
There's enough entertainment outside."
PARSONS said she thinks police should patrol the area more regularly
on Friday and Saturday nights.
The parking lot is the same one in which Ryan
VLAAD, 26, died
after being punched in the head during an early morning brawl
in July 2002.
Ward 3 Coun. Bernie
MacDONALD said he's fielded complaints from
neighbours who have had beer bottles thrown at their houses and
on their property after 2 a.m. and have heard fights breaking
out.
"This has been an ongoing thing with the residents," he said.
The concerns were passed on to police and
MacDONALD thought the
problems had been quelled until he heard about yesterday's shooting.
But MacDONALD said he thinks drugs are the "root evil" behind
violence and shootings in the city this year.
"Until we cut the flow of drugs, we're going to see this and
it's going to continue to rise," he said.
Police said they don't know whether drugs were involved in the
fatal shooting.
Officers blocked off a large section of the strip mall, which
also houses a Sport Mart, Goodwill, variety store, karate school
and Tim Hortons.
A green Jeep and a black car also were taped off, though police
wouldn't say why.
A shell casing and knife were visible at the scene.
A green camouflage hat, grey T-shirt, plastic beer cups, a cigarette
pack and a lighter were strewn near what appeared to be a bloody
stain near the black car.
Forensic detectives picked through the evidence and used a fire
department aerial truck to photograph and videotape the lot.
An autopsy will be conducted today to determine the cause of
death.

E.G.F. "Ted"
SWEET
By Doug SWEET,
Wednesday,
September 7, 2005, Page A26
Mechanical engineer, inventor, pipe organist, husband, father,
grandfather. Born June 3, 1924, in Brantford, Ontario Died March
22 in Burlington, Ontario, of complications from Alzheimer's
disease, aged 80.
Rev. Don PARSONS glanced up in the middle of his graveside prayer.
A four-engined, Second World War-vintage bomber droned loudly
overhead. He paused.
"It's not everyone who gets a fly-past," he said quietly.
Indeed not. And although Ted would have preferred to hear a steam
locomotive whistle as it chuffed along the tracks below the old
Hamilton Cemetery on August 20, the heavy Lancaster would certainly
do.
Something old, something mechanical, something big and solid.
These were all qualities Ted appreciated.
A graduate of Brantford Collegiate Institute and the University
of Toronto (where he joined the student air corps during the
latter part of the war,) Ted was the only child of George
SWEET
and Muriel
PHELPS. He began his own family in Brantford when
he married Peggy
DOWIE, a teacher who hailed from Grimsby, Ontario,
in 1952. As chief engineer at the old Brantford Coach and Body
truck-building firm, Ted was instrumental in the design and development
of the upside-down pyramid style of sand spreader that is now
a ubiquitous winter sight across the colder parts of North America.
After the company was sold in the early 1960s, he moved, with
his wife and two children, Doug and Marnie, to Fergus, Ontario,
where he worked for Beatty Bros., the large agricultural implement
and appliance manufacturer. Tempted by the chance to participate
in some pure engineering research, he moved in 1963 to Kingston,
Ontario, to join a small team affiliated with Queen's University
dedicated to the development of a "free-piston" engine. The loss
of a grant for the project prompted yet another family move,
this time to Ottawa, where Ted joined the Department of Industry,
Trade and Commerce. Here, he helped design the massive Centennial
caravan trucks that criss-crossed Canada in 1967.
But government wasn't Ted's cup of tea. He moved to Peterborough,
Ontario, in 1966, where he joined De Laval, a division of the
massive Swedish Alfa Laval company. Here, Ted worked in both
engineering and sales capacities. After a move in the mid-1970s
to the Oakville-Burlington area, a variety of other sales and
engineering jobs followed. But by the mid-1980s, the early symptoms
of the inexorable disease that would ultimately claim him began
to make their presence felt and Ted retired to enjoy a bit of
travel, some cycling and playing bridge for as long as he could.
An accomplished pianist and pipe organist, who filled in for
vacationing organists at United Churches in Fergus and Peterborough,
Ted adored the mathematical precision of Bach. Here, his ingenuity
found another application. Unable to install a full pipe organ
at home, he managed to rig an ancient pedal board to an old-fashioned
pump-organ and employed a vintage Electrolux vacuum cleaner for
suction. His dream of adding a second keyboard was, alas, unfulfilled.
Other inventions included an ingenious one-piece screwdriver
built in such a way as to let you apply tremendous torque to
a recalcitrant screw. Enough torque to break the screw, he discovered
more than once. But the screwdriver, like everything else he
built, was solid. It was later marketed as the Dura Drive.
We buried his ashes in an old family plot, next to his great-grandfather,
Edmund Edmonds
SWEET, a Methodist minister born in England in
1812. The old grey granite stone had stood for more than 120
years before being buffed and engraved once again. Solid as ever.
Doug SWEET is Ted's son.

Catharine passed away peacefully, January 20, 2005, at Saint
Joseph's Hospital. Born at her home in N.E. Margaree, on April
1, 1921. She married Charles
MacLELLAN of Deepdale, Nova Scotia,
August 1, 1942. They celebrated 60 years together. Catharine
was a talented piano player and loved Scottish music. She had
countless qualities. A faithful wife, loving mother and grandmother.
She adored children, especially her own, and raised her family
to be more that they could be. It was Catharine's sharp wit and
quick sense of humour that made her special. She shared these
qualities with everyone she met and used them to help others
in difficult times. Catharine and Charlie left Cape Breton for
work in Sudbury, Elliot Lake, Timmins, Kirkland Lake, and settled
in Toronto. Kay and Charlie lived in Toronto but their hearts
were in Cape Breton. They combined their talents and started
dances, entertaining thousands over a period of five years. (Catharine
on the piano and Charlie on the violin). Yet she still made time
to work and raise her family. She will be greatly missed by her
children Myrna
