PANGMAN, Lillian Noel
Lillian was the pioneer of the "drop in". She loved to entertain and was always ready for any surprise visit, welcoming her many Friends into her summer garden or perhaps in front of a warm fireplace on a cold afternoon. Within moments, tea, cucumber sandwiches, and her special cookies were on the tray. She was equally welcomed when she would appear on the doorstep of a good friend, armed with a warm smile and a bouquet of flowers from her garden.
She came by her pioneer spirit quite naturally. Her grandfather William F. SALSBURY arrived in Canada from England in 1870 and quickly gained prominence as a senior executive with the Canadian Pacific Railway. He was on board the first train which crossed the country in 1886. She was the daughter of Mary E. SALSBURY and Ernest A. Earle, long time Vancouver residents, and had two sisters, "Audie" and Marjorie, and a brother Ernie, all who predeceased Lillian.
Lillian spent most of her adult life in North and West Vancouver. She played an active role in her community, but was always around for her three children, Donald, Janet, and Frances. She was sadly widowed in 1973 when the love of her life "Bud" passed away. Only two months earlier that year she and Bud had suffered the sudden and painful loss of their daughter Frannie.
Despite these tragic hurdles, she had tremendous strength, and an exceptionally kind heart. She traveled the world with Friends, visiting the United Kingdom, Eastern Europe, Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Thailand and China, and even went on a driving trip through the U.S. when she was in her mid 80's -- and she always maintained her wonderful sense of humour.
She will be remembered and loved by Donald and Judi, Oakville, Ontario, Janet and Gerry HERMAN, Kamloops, British Columbia, her seven grandchildren Jacquie, David (Rosie), Jeffrey, Robyn & Heather PANGMAN, and Russell and Graeme HERMAN, great grand daughter Lauren PANGMAN, and four nieces and a nephew.
The family thanks Arbor House in Salmon Arm for the wonderful care they have provided Lillian over the last three years. You gave her the dignity she so deserved.
Lillian passed away March 14-2005. She has enriched our lives in many special ways and leaves us in her 94th year.
A Celebration of Lillian's life will be held Monday April 4, 2005 1: 30 p.m.
Church of St. Francis in the Wood
4773 Piccadilly South,
West Vancouver, B.C.

CLIFFORD, Tom -- Dispatch:
By James RUSK, Saturday, April 30, 2005, Page M6
Tom CLIFFORD was one of the last remaining exemplars of the sort of politician that once dominated city politics: Anglo-Saxon, blue-collar Toronto in origin; staunch monarchist, temperance crusader and churchgoer in belief and practice.
"He was reflective of a different time period, different economy, different population, when the traditional working class was the major economic element in this city," says deputy mayor Joe PANTALONE, a 25-year political veteran whose council career overlapped with the last decade of Mr. CLIFFORD's 27 years on the Toronto Board of Education and city council. "With Tom CLIFFORD, we are seeing the passing of one of the remaining political leadership elements from that era," he says.
Mr. CLIFFORD died last Saturday at the age of 81 after being diagnosed with leukemia two months ago.
Over the years, Mr. CLIFFORD, who represented a Riverdale ward, served on Metro council, the harbour commission, the board of Toronto Hydro and as chairman of every standing committee on Toronto council.
He was born above his grandfather's grocery store at Pape and Gerrard and ran the store after he returned home from service in the army during the Second World War. A lifetime bachelor, he lived in the building for most of his life.
"Tom CLIFFORD was as local as you can get, in terms of relationship with individuals," Mr. PANTALONE says.
Former councillor Betty DISERO describes Mr. CLIFFORD as soft-spoken, generous, kind and always a gentleman. "There was a whole kind of gentleman's club of politicians, absolutely. When I arrived there in 1985, out of 23 members of council, six were women."
He was smart, she says. "But sometimes he was a little bit mischievous because he didn't let on how smart he was."
And "he was a Tory, and he let everybody know it," Ms. DISERO says. In fact, he ran for the federal Progressive Conservatives in Broadview-Greenwood in 1972 and in a 1978 by-election, in which a political newcomer named Bob Rae nosed by him with a margin of only 88 votes.
