Lillian Helen CHRISTIAN (née GOULD,) 88 years, of Sarnia and formerly of Petrolia, died at Bluewater-Health C.E.E. Site, Petrolia, on Thursday, July 21, 2005. Born in Toronto, she was the daughter of the late Aldridge and Lillian GOULD. Mrs. CHRISTIAN is survived by her children, Eric CHRISTIAN of London, Frances and Roger VLAMINCK of Port Lambton, Doug and Janet CHRISTIAN of Brampton, Barry and Jackie CHRISTIAN of Petrolia, Linda NOBEL of Fort Myers Beach, Florida, Brad CHRISTIAN and Maria BEAUCHAMP of Corunna, fourteen grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 55 years, Vernon CHRISTIAN (1997.) A private service to celebrate the life of Helen CHRISTIAN was held on Saturday, July 23, 2005 at the Needham-Jay Funeral Home, Petrolia. Wendy STARR officiated. A eulogy was given by Mrs. CHRISTIAN's son, Brad. Her granddaughter, Tia BOONE, sang "Going up Yonder." Also, two jazz selections were played during the service: "Tin Roof Blues" by Louis Armstrong and "Bye and Bye/Saints" by Gregg Stafford and Dr. Michael White. Mrs. CHRISTIAN's cremated remains will be buried in Hillsdale Cemetery, Petrolia. Grandfather of Andrew Fergus, Braeden Jean-Maurice and Liam Patrick. Survived by 3 brothers Spencer (Wendy) of Calgary, Donald (Sue) of Sylacauga, Alabama and Howard (Diane) of Manitoulin Island. Predeceased by brother William. Survived by sister-in-law Mary (Jim GIBBONS) of Fergus, Ontario. Also survived by aunt Anna TREFFRY of Tillsonburg, Ontario, and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.
Born in South Norwich, Township, Oxford County, Ontario, he is a graduate of the University of Western, Ontario, the London School of Economics, and the University of Toronto where he received his doctorate in economics. He had a long and distinguish career in numerous departments of the Government of Canada including Northern Development, Export Development Corporation, Canadian International Development Agency and Industry, Trade and Commerce, where he was Assistant Deputy Minister. He went on to be Deputy Secretary at the Ministry of State for Economic Development. Speeding scrutinized after trio of fatalities

Ontario Provincial Police yesterday identified two men who died in separate crashes that killed three people Friday.
Karl NOBLE, 44, of Middlesex Centre was killed when a pickup truck collided with his vehicle in the intersection of Ilderton and Denfield roads about 4 p.m.
The pickup carrying welding gear was driving erratically on Denfield Road before it clipped a station wagon, went through a stop sign and collided with NOBLE's vehicle travelling west on Ilderton Road, police said.
The impact caused the welding truck to explode, starting a fire.
NOBLE and the truck driver died at the scene. Police hadn't confirm the identity of the truck driver yesterday.
The driver of the station wagon, a 63-year-old Strathroy man, and his two passengers were not hurt.
The station wagon had been heading south on Denfield Road when its driver noticed the pickup truck behind it closing in quickly. The station wagon pulled over to the shoulder but was struck and spun around by the truck.
"Every driver has to remember to watch out for other drivers and drive defensively," Ontario Provincial Police Const. Jennifer WILKS said yesterday.
"It does merit coming up to an intersection carefully, even if you do have the right of way."
Police are still investigating whether speed and alcohol were factors in the crash, she said.
Investigators are also probing what caused a car travelling south on Shaw Road in Thames Centre to crash into a hydro pole on Friday about 7: 20 p.m.
Steven PITCHERS, 30, of London lost control of the car he was driving when it crossed into the north lane, veered back into the south shoulder and struck a utility pole, breaking it.
Paramedics tried to resuscitate PITCHERS but he died on scene.
WILKS said a family member was following behind and came upon the crash.
She said alcohol was not a factor.
Police are still investigating whether speed may have been a factor in the crash.

Unexpectedly, at his residence in London on Thursday, August 11, 2005 John Leonard DONOVAN in his 65th year. Beloved husband of Marianne (ALLEN) DONOVAN since August 5, 1961. Predeceased by his only son, Paul Anthony DONOVAN (January 28, 2003) and his sister Doreen Alice NOBLE (2002.)
John was born on September 28, 1940 in Barkers Point, New Brunswick to the late Ronald and Thelma (CLARK) DONOVAN. John served with The Royal Canadian Regiment between 1958 and 1964. He then attended the Ontario Vocational College (now Fanshawe College) and worked as a machinist for nearly 30 years at General Motors Diesel, retiring at the end of 1995 as a chief inspector. He was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Duchess of Kent Branch and the Royal Canadian Regiment Association. John is survived by his wife and two grandchildren, Julian and Joshua DONOVAN of London nephew James (Beatrice) NOBLE, Toronto, Ontario; nieces Sandra (Greg) D'ENTREMONT, Quispamsis, New Brunswick and Jennifer (Scott) MURRAY, Saint John, New Brunswick; his brother-in-law Harold NOBLE, Saint John, New Brunswick along with 7 cousins, 4 great nieces and 2 great nephews. Born in Toronto on September 28th, 1912, Alf was a Second World War veteran serving overseas in Europe with the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals. Alf was active in his community being a life member of the Brampton Lion's Club, a past president of the Brussels Lion's Club, a past District Deputy Grand Master for the North Huron Masonic District and past master of Saint John's Lodge No. 284 in Brussels and a 60 year member of the Royal Canadian Legion. GOODEVE, Arthur George
Suddenly on December 21, 2005 at the age of 83. George was born in Ottawa on April 10, 1922. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy at the outbreak of World War 2 and rose from Midshipman to Lieutenant Commander, surviving the sinking of his ship, the Levis, in 1941. He has lived in every region and most major cities in Canada, working in financial roles in various capacities particularly in the mining industry. He retired in 1982 and moved to Victoria, British Columbia. George is survived by his wife of 47 years, Alice; beloved father of Philip GOODEVE, Susan (David) MARTIN, Anne (Ron) YUNGWIRTH and Victoria (Ian) NOBLE. He is also survived by 11 loving grandchildren.
A celebration of George's life will be held at First Memorial Funeral Chapel, 1155 Fort Street, on Wednesday, December 28 at 2: 00 p.m. with a reception to follow in the Holly Room. If desired, donations in George's memory may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

After a courageous battle with heart failure on Saturday, December 10th, 2005 at Lakeridge Health Corp. - Oshawa at the age of 67. Beloved husband of Jeanette PHALEN (née BOVAIR) of 46 years. Survived by his brothers John PHALEN and his wife Linda of Ottawa, Perry PHALEN and his wife Rosemarie of Bowmanville, Ted PHALEN and his wife Betty Ann of Oshawa and by his sister-in-law Kathy HAND of Newcastle. James will be sadly missed by his Friends, neighbours, many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by his sisters Audrey KIGHT, Judy NOBLE and by his brother Joe HAND.
