Darlene MONEY of Mississauga, Ontario, writes about Christina McCALL, whose obituary ran on April 30.
In 1952, as a freshman at the University of Toronto, I often felt I didn't belong in that rarefied intellectual atmosphere. But in second year, clever, witty Christina McCALL and I became close Friends, and my small-town outlook acquired from her a little sophistication. Although sometimes we'd skip a dull lecture to go to a movie (an art form she adored), we were both worshippers at the altar of literature. Chris and I spent many hours between classes drinking coffee and discussing the usual concerns of bookish undergraduates -- authors and their works, essays to be written, hopes for the future, and, of course, sex. She invented clever, apt, but not always complimentary nicknames for our professors. Her irritation threshold could be low, and her mood was occasionally dark, a characteristic she attributed to the "black Irish" in her.
We both thought we would be writers, but only she succeeded brilliantly. For several years after graduation we stayed in touch but then we drifted apart, meeting occasionally in the 1980s and '90s. In 2003, my Christmas card was returned by the post office. I understand now that she wanted only the company of her loved ones as her health deteriorated but wish I could have visited one last time.

Age 91, Of Marlborough, Massachusetts, U.S.A., formerly of Framingham, died Thursday December 15, 2005, at Beaumont of Northborough after an illness. She was the wife of the late Edmond B. KENNEDY who died in 1967, former steeplechase champion jockey in Canada and the United States. She leaves her children: Michael B. KENNEDY and his wife Linda of Okeechobee, Florida., Dennis P. KENNEDY and his wife Carolyn of Marlborough, Marie E. GELINA and her companion Thomas KURBS of Marlborough and Cami M. PHILBRICK and her husband Richard of Marlborough; A brother Salvatore BERNARD and three sisters Eleanor CIRA, Yolanda CIRA and Rosemarie RICH all of Toronto, Canada. Also leaves 12 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. She was born in Toronto, Canada, daughter of the late Michael A. and Madaline (MONFREDO) BERNARD and was a graduate of the Brunswick High School in Toronto and also attended Loretta Abbey College. For many years she was a bookkeeper at Wallace's Oil Co. in Framingham and also at Glick's Toyota of Framingham. After retirement she worked at the family business - Kennedy's Pub and Restaurant in Marlboro and was affectionately known as "Nanna". She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church. She enjoyed knitting and tending her rose garden. Most of all she loved her family. Funeral will be held at 10: 30 a.m. Monday December 19, 2005, from the John P. Rowe Funeral Home Inc., 97 Main Saint Marlborough, Massachusetts with a Mass of the Resurrection at 11: 30 a.m. in the Immaculate Conception Church, 11 Prospect Street, Marlborough, Massachusetts. Burial will follow in St. Stephen Cemetery, Framingham. Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday 2 until 6 p.m. Flowers may be sent or memorial donations may be made to either the Alzheimer Association, 136 Cameron Ave., Cambridge, Massachusetts 02140 or to the American Heart Association, 20 Speen Street, Framingham, Massachusetts 01701.

Peacefully at his home, on Wednesday, December 28, 2005, with his family by his side, at the age of 60, after a 6 month struggle with cancer. Paul faced his illness with the same patience and grace that he showed throughout his life. He spent his last months in the warmth of his family and was able to visit his beloved Lake Superior and sit by an October fire in a cabin in Algonquin Park. Paul is lovingly remembered and will be sadly missed by Kathryn MOFFAT, his wife of 31 years, his children Daniel and Johanna, his mother Anne (Peggy), his brother Alan and family, and many other relatives and Friends. Mrs. Ernestina DA COSTA a resident of Wallaceburg passed away peacefully on Thursday, March 17, 2005 at the Chatham Kent Health Alliance "Sydenham Campus", in Wallaceburg at the age of 83. She was born in Portugal and was a daughter of the late Arthur and Antonia (FURTADO) DE ANDRADE. Ernestina was a parish member of Holy Family Church and had received her 40 year pin with the C.W.L. at Holy Family Church. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed gardening and her flowers. Beloved wife of the late Arthur DA COSTA. Dear mother and mother-in-law of Art and Charlene DA COSTA of Wallaceburg and Maria and William SETO of Burlington. Loving grandmother of Cary, Cindy, Mark, Jennifer and Christopher. Kind sister-in-law of Joe and Theresa DA COSTA, Laura DE LIMA and Eduarda RIQUINHA. Dear friend of Manuel and Helen MONIZ. Godmother of Gerry, Louisa, Helen, Nancy and Michael. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her brothers and sisters in Portugal. The late Ernestina rested at the Eric F. Nicholls Funeral Home, 639 Elgin Street, in Wallaceburg, until Saturday, March 19, 2005 when the Funeral Mass was celebrated at 11 a.m. from Holy Family Church in Wallaceburg. Fr. Greg BONIN, celebrated the mass and Mrs. Kit KELLER presided at the organ and sang the mass. Readings were done by Gerry MONIZ and Michael MONIZ. Pallbearers were Gerry MONIZ, Michael MONIZ, Mark DA COSTA, Mario DA COSTA, Ted RIQUINHA and Bill SETO. Flower Bearers were Cindy DA COSTA and Jennifer SETO. Interment has taken place in Riverview Cemetery, Wallaceburg. Parish Prayers were offered at the funeral home Friday at 8 p.m. As an expression of sympathy, donations to the Holy Family Church Building Fund may be left at the funeral home. Passed away on Saturday, September 24th, 2005, in Calgary, Alberta, after a brief illness at the age of 89 years. Although profoundly deaf since early childhood, Violet was a remarkable, beautiful and intelligent lady. She was a patient, gentle, loving, nurturing mother who raised five sons on three continents. Violet was devoted to her nine grandchildren and she supported and shared in their lives over the years both in Canada and the United States. Violet was born on January 17th, 1916 in Ajmer, India. She was the only daughter of Edith (née D'SILVA) and Thomas MONIZ. Orphaned at the age of three, Violet was brought up by her maternal grandmother and her Uncle Anthony D'SILVA in Bombay where she met and married Dr. Vincent DIAS and had five sons (much to her great regret no daughters). Violet leaves behind a large and close family, five sons and four daughters-in-law, Vivian and Greta of Brampton, Ontario, Vernon and Jane of Calgary, Alberta, Virgil and Terry of Thousand Oaks, California, Valerian and Giselle of Victoria, British Columbia, and Victor of Red Deer; her beloved grandchildren, Keith, Melanie, Michelle, Matthew, Michael, Kenneth, Angelina, Kristen and Emma; her aunts Olive D'SILVA of Toronto and Irene HEREDIA of Reis Magos, Goa; and her brother-in-law Tom PEREIRA of Don Mills, Ontario.
