MICHELIN,
Terry▼ -- Dispatch
By Oliver MOORE,
Saturday,
May 28, 2005, Page M6
For a generation, Terry
MICHELIN ran an old-school butcher shop
in St. James Town. He had spent his life in the industry and
his son says he fought every modernizing idea.
"I was always wanting to change things, but he was the routine
guy," Mark
MICHELIN says about his dad. "Then, once we'd make
the change and it worked, it was all his idea."
The small-town type of service remained strong enough that more
than half of the people at Mr.
MICHELIN's funeral were customers.
Others knew him as a mainstay of the community.
"One lady came to the funeral and she said, 'I've never shopped
in your store and I never really knew the man,' " Mark, 37, says.
But she came all the same because of a brief meeting with the
elder Mr. MICHELIN at one of the annual Cabbagetown festivals.
Terry MICHELIN was born in northern Italy in 1927 and came to
Canada when he was 9. Settling in Timmins with his family, he
eventually got a job at a Dominion grocery store, where he met
his wife, Doris.
The couple made their way to Toronto and in 1971 opened a tiny
butcher shop on Parliament, St. Jamestown Steak and Chops. It expanded
over the years to include a fish counter and then grocery items.
Rarely giving himself time off and taking every chance to teach
his sons the meat trade, Mr.
MICHELIN grew into old age behind
the counter of his shop. "Even when he was sick -- he had cancer
he would still come in. He just couldn't stay away," Mark
says. "He stuck it out until after Christmas, but his health
wasn't going well."
Mr. MICHELIN died on April 26 at the age of 78. His son now runs
the shop.

Ettore "Terry"
MICHELIN
By Beth KAPLAN,
Thursday,
June 23, 2005, Page A24
Butcher, husband, father, community booster. Born April 1, 1927,
in Italy. Died April 26 in Toronto, of cancer, aged 78.
In the heart of Toronto is a neighbourhood called Cabbagetown,
and at the heart of Cabbagetown, for 35 years, was a man called
Terry MICHELIN. He was known to all, with affection and respect,
as Terry the Butcher. From his domain, St. Jamestown Steak and
Chops on Parliament Street (a.k.a "Terry's"), he presided with
benevolence and cheer over his community, although until the
last year of his life, he didn't actually live there. But he
fed everyone there, handing wieners to visiting dogs and hunks
of cheese and kielbasa to anyone in the store who looked hungry,
especially women. Terry was handsome and charismatic, with thick
white hair and a wide white smile. That smile made our corner
of the inner city feel like a village.
Santo MICHELIN,
Terry's▲▼ father, emigrated from northern Italy
to Timmins, bringing over his family, including nine-year-old
Ettore, in 1936. Terry began work as a butcher in Timmins; he
moved to Toronto as meat manager of a Dominion store, where he
fell in love with a young employee, Doris.
"Yes, it was mainly because of the meat!" he liked to say.
The couple took over and ran St. Jamestown Steak and Chops, until
their sons Mark and Santo were born and Doris started an at-home
business -- foster care for newborns. When the boys were old
enough to serve part-time at the store, their mother came back
to work once more beside her husband.
And there they both reigned: quiet, thoughtful Doris, and Terry
who remembered every name, danced with every wallflower at community
dances, and, beaming, joined a line-up of other local businessmen
modelling satin ball gowns for a charity fashion show.
Then, in 1992, tragedy: freckle-faced Santo, in his new red truck,
stopped to offer help to thugs masquerading as stranded motorists.
The 19-year-old was shot dead for his truck. Doris never recovered.
More and more, she was content to stay home. Doris
MICHELIN died
of breast cancer in 2000, at the age of 66.
Terry kept working, six days a week. The whole neighbourhood
rejoiced when he found a new romance -- Jean, from down the street.
When Terry moved in with Jean he had, at last, a Cabbagetown
address. Mark set in motion a big renovation of the store, turning
it into a stylish one-stop-shopping destination with gourmet
breads and coffees, fruit and vegetables -- even fish. Resistant
at first, Terry came to appreciate the improvements. He alone,
however, never wore the little hat Mark had designed for staff.
Last spring, although in his late 70s, Terry looked and moved
like a vital man of 60. Last summer, after his cancer diagnosis,
he suddenly looked his age. As he chopped and sliced he was bent
over, grey with pain. But until Christmas, he was there.
And then he wasn't. Mark endured with grace the travail of working
long days while responding to endless anxious questions about
his dad. After chemo, Terry was too weak to come in, and then
the cancer spread. Until the end, he was struggling to get back
to the store.
With his father's drive and his mother's calm, Mark continues
the family tradition of neighborly welcome and fine fresh food.
He has calculated that his dad gave away more than five pounds
of kielbasa a week.
Terry the Butcher loved his work and his life. We, his Friends
and customers, are grateful that for so long, he shared that
joy with us.
Beth KAPLAN is a friend and customer of Terry
MICHELIN.
