At Elmwood Place Retirement Home, London on Saturday, April 2nd, 2005, Mrs. Winifred (DUTTON) POSNO of London in her 95th year. Beloved mother of Ruth HADDOW and her husband Dennis of Saint Thomas Judy FILIPPI and her late husband Ernie; Bill POSNO and his wife Mary Jane of London; and Reverend Dennis POSNO and his wife Kim of Barrie. Also loved and missed by her grandchildren Robin, David (Cindy), Jamie (Brenda), Doug (Liz) and Melanie (Steve) Mark, Tim (Sharon) and Tom; Andrea (Bob), Keri and Gwyneth; Shannon (Pat), Shawn and Denny; her greatgrandchildren Meagan, Melissa, Aimee and Rylee; Chad and Corey; Meagan, Niki and Tyler; Christine and Brittany; Dominique and Karly; Hailey and Hunter; Jake, Rachel, and Bobby; Patrick, Riley and Lucas; Cassidy and Gavyn; and her great-greatgrandchildren Aaliyah and Aiden.
Winifred was born on January 2, 1911 in Pickmere, Cheshire, England. She was the youngest of the 10 children of Frederica (RILEY) and William Henry DUTTON. The family immigrated to Canada in 1920, and Winifred grew up on a farm at Williams Settlement near Cultus in Norfolk County. Winifred went to High School in Port Rowan and Tillsonburg, where she graduated from Grade 13 with honours. She moved to Amherstburg, Ontario to live with her sister Emmie (MELOCHE) so that she could work to save enough money to attend Normal School in London. After graduating in 1930 Winifred was hired by the London School Board and taught for 8 years at Talbot Street School. In 1938 Winifred married William POSNO and together they started Posno Flower Service on Bruce Street in London, Ontario. Later, Winifred returned to teaching and her son Bill took over running the business. Winifred received her B.A. from the University of Western Ontario in 1962, completing her courses at night and at summer school. She later received her M.A. in Education. Winifred taught for many years at Mountsfield and Arthur Ford Public Schools. She retired in June 1974 and began travelling extensively, going from coast to coast in Canada and to England, Europe, China and on several cruises. Winifred's family and her garden were her joy. She could recite countless poems from memory. She was an amazing woman, dearly loved and will be greatly missed. The family will receive Friends from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at the A. Millard George Funeral Home, 60 Ridout Street South, London. Suddenly at London Health Sciences Centre, University Hospital on Thursday, August 25, 2005, Dr. David B. MELTZER, B.Sc., M.D., F.R.C.D.C. of London in his 87th year. Beloved husband of the late Livia MELTZER (1990,) survived and lovingly remembered by his son Alan MELTZER of London; daughter Sari MELTZER, her husband Alan PARK and grand_son Josh PARK of Houston, Texas; and companion Ruth FINK of London.
Dr. MELTZER was a hematologist and oncologist at St. Joseph's Health Centre for nearly 35 years. He practiced medicine with the highest standards of intelligence, compassion and good humour, always sharing those qualities with all privileged to know and love him. Next to family and Friends, Dr. MELTZER loved words and word play, and he was an inveterate punster and cruciverbalist. An active and enegetic man, he was an avid cyclist, swimmer and golfer. A little over a year ago, he was very proud to cash in his hole in one insurance on the 16th hole at Sunningdale Golf Club, where he was a member for 32 years. Funeral service will be held at Logan Funeral Home, 371 Dundas St. (between Waterloo and Colborne St.) on Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 2 p.m. with Rabbi Joel WITTSTEIN officiating. Revered doctor known for personal touch

A prominent and well-loved London doctor, who saved countless lives in a 35-year career at St. Joseph's Health Care, died Thursday.
Dr. David MELTZER, credited by colleagues as a pioneer in oncology in London, died of heart problems at age 86.
"So many people owe their lives to David," MELTZER's cousin, Alan COHEN, said of the quick-witted doctor.
"He was an incredible man and an incredible doctor."
MELTZER, the youngest of eight children born in Manitoba, planted roots in London in the mid-1940s, when he met and married his wife, Zivia, during his military training in Clinton.
After serving in the air force overseas during the war, he enrolled in medical school at University of Western Ontario in 1946.
His long and distinguished career at St. Joseph's began in 1955, when he was hired on in hematology, a branch of medicine dealing with the blood.
For more than three decades, he worked at the hospital in both hematology and oncology, earning a reputation not only for medical skill, but also for personal touches that made him a favourite with patients.
"He had this really wonderful and unique ability to bridge the science of oncology and the art of caring for patients," said Dr. Don TAVES, a former student and colleague of the revered London doctor.
"He had a remarkable wit and a wonderful sense of humour and he was loved by many of his patients," Taves said.
MELTZER, a "master joke-teller" whose jokes numbered in the thousands, was also well liked by the nuns who worked at the hospital.
"I think he's the only person who could tell an off-colour joke to a nun and get away with it," said cousin Phyllis COHEN. "He had them coming back for more."
Even with his dedication to medicine in London, the avid cyclist and golfer always made time for family, said his two grown children, Sari and Alan.
As he helped with the city's first chemotherapy treatment and localized successful medical treatments used elsewhere, MELTZER fostered a wonderful family life.
"He was very, very involved with raising us," his son said. "He was a father who took a lot of pride in his children."
MELTZER, who had an oncology ward at St. Joseph's and a University of Western Ontario scholarship named in his honour, held his family as one of his greatest achievements, said his daughter.
"He said at my wedding, 'Of all the titles I've been given over the years, the most important one was Dad,' " she said.

Suddenly, at London Health Sciences Centre University Hospital, Thursday, August 25, 2005, Dr. David B. MELTZER, B.Sc., M.D., F.R.C.P.C. of London in his 87th year. Beloved husband of the late Zivia MELTZER (1990,) survived and lovingly remembered by his son Alan MELTZER of London; daughter Sari MELTZER, her husband Alan PARK and grand_son Josh PARK of Houston, Texas; and companion Ruth FINK of London.
Dr. MELTZER was a hematologist and oncologist at St. Joseph's Health Centre for nearly 35 years. He practiced medicine with the highest standards of intelligence, compassion and good humour, always sharing those qualities with all privileged to know and love him.
Next to family and Friends, Dr. MELTZER loved words and word play, and he was an inveterate punster and cruciverbalist. An active and energetic man, he was an avid cyclist, swimmer, and golfer. A little over a year ago, he was very proud to cash in his hole in one insurance on the 16th hole at Sunningdale Golf Club, where he was a member for 32 years.
Funeral services will be held at Logan Funeral Home, 371 Dundas Street (between Waterloo and Colbourne Street), on Sunday, August 28, 2005 at 2: 00 p.m. with Rabbi Joel WITTSTEIN officiating. Interment at Restmount Cemetery.

Margaret, also known to her family as 'Peg' was the last of nine children born to the late Charles and Beatrice (SEAGER) COUGHTREY. Margaret was the beloved wife of the late Stanley L. DURRANT (Gar) who predeceased her in 1971 while they were doing missionary work with The Evangelical Alliance Mission in South Africa, where he is buried. Dear mother of Rosemary and husband Douglas MELVILLE of New Hamburg and Marguerite and husband John CASTIGLIONE of Toronto. Entered into rest after a brief fight with cancer at Orillia Soldiers' Memorial Hospital on Tuesday, March 15, 2005 with her three girls by her side and in her son's heart. Bettsy's great pride and joy was her family. She will be profoundly missed by her children Carolyn (Neil) TURNBULL, Janice (Charles) WHITE/WHYTE, John (Marty LOCKHART) NEWMAN and Nancy (John MILNE) NEWMAN. Her love and sense of tradition will be missed by her many grandchildren and their families: Emma and Sammie TURNBULL, Tim (Rhonda MELVIN) WHITE/WHYTE, Alison WHITE/WHYTE, Liam and Colin WEBSTER, Rachel (Rick) KRUYF and children Teo and Mackenzie and Gretchen (Zeion WILSON) NEWMAN and their daughter Zuzu. She was predeceased by her first love, Samuel John NEWMAN to whom she was married for 34 years and her beloved brothers Donald Arthur, Wallace Emerson, Stewart Andrew, Bruce George and John Stanley and two sisters Marjorie Jean and Margaret Bernice BETTS. She was a dear aunt to Joan, John, Judy, Lynne and to Helen, Ralph and Bruce. She leaves behind her beloved husband of 20 years, Wrexford GROVES of Beaverton and will be missed by his family, Don (Crystal) GROVES, Mary (Pat) BROWN and Bob (Laura) GROVES. Born in London, he attended Princess Elizabeth Public School and G.A. Wheable Secondary. He lived in Pickering, Ontario for most of his adult life. Funeral service was held at The Simple Alternative Funeral Home, 1057 Brock Road, Pickering on Tuesday December 27, 2005. Memorial donations to the Canadian Cancer Society are appreciated.
