Suddenly on Sunday, October 23, 2005, at his much-loved home in Vancouver, where he lived for almost 60 years. He was predeceased by his wife, Doris MARGESON, and his son Robert. Survived by his sons, John and Peter, his daughter, Joanne DUCHASTEL, and Robert's widow, Cushla, grandchildren, Catherine, Devon, and Matthew CURTIS, Jean-Pierre and Nicole DUCHASTEL and great-grandchildren, Saskia and George GILMER, and Marguerite HANNAN. He will also be remembered by Anne M.K. CURTIS, George BONNAUD, Judy ANGELSTAD, Hudson GILMER and Andrew HANNAN. Special thanks go to Deborah HAMILTON who for so long has been a reliable and constant presence in his life. Also thanks to the "Merry Wives of Allison Road" who brought much fun and caring to his final years.
Born in Stogumber, Somerset, on September 4, 1906, he was raised as a "prairie boy" in Saskatchewan and, after having studied law at the University of Saskatchewan, went to Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar. Returning to Canada, he practised law in Regina, before becoming a professor of law at Dalhousie University from 1934-1945. Responding to the wish of the Bar of British Columbia that a law school be established in the province, the University of British Columbia appointed him the founding dean of the new law school.
Remaining active at the law school right up to his death, he has influenced the lives and careers of some of Canada's top judges, many of its distinguished teachers and thousands of its practising lawyers. At the international level, he was a delegate to four Commonwealth Education Conferences resulting in the creation of the Commonwealth Scholarships, served as a special advisor to the Government of Canada at the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and represented the country at two United Nations Law of the Sea conferences.
Some of his other accomplishments, of which he was particularly proud, were having initiated the first program of public health insurance as a student at the University of Saskatchewan, having drafted the Farmers' Creditors Arrangement Act which saved the family farms of Dirty Thirties from rogue creditors, having been a part of the first post-war committee to revise Canadian competition policy, having encouraged and actively overseen the graduation of the first aboriginal Canadian from a law school in Canada, having been a member of the first federal electoral boundaries commission, having been the labour arbitrator who kept the Empress Hotel open in 1958, having been the one in 1953 to suggest naming the Queen Elizabeth Islands in order to reinforce Canada's Arctic claims, having been the one in 1963 to name Simon Fraser University, having helped to establish and draft the constitution of the Association of Universities and Colleagues of Canada (A.U.C.C.) and the Council of Canadian Law Deans. On a personal level, he spoke passionately of his love for the contemplative art of fly fishing.
He received many awards over his lifetime, from the Governor-General's Bronze Medal at the age of 18, to honorary degrees from several Canadian universities, to being the first recipient of the Law Society of British Columbia Award in 1986, to being named to the Order of British Columbia in 1995, and to the Order of Canada in 2004.
A funeral service will be held at St. Anselm's Anglican Church, 5210 University Boulevard, Vancouver, at 2: 00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 2, 2005. She contributed much to the corporate sector and her community through her many corporate, provincial and executive volunteer board directorships, including with BCE Inc. and the Ontario Board of Parole, and as Chairman and President of the Young Women's Christian Association Toronto, and Chairman and President of the United Way of Greater Toronto, in addition to her other corporate and volunteer board directorships. Her many contributions were recognized with a Citizenship Award from Toronto in 1977 and a Commemorative Medal for the 125th Anniversary of Canada in 1992 from Governor General Ramon Hnatyshyn. Warren died in his 96th year at Kitchener on 4th January 2005. Warren, affectionately called "Sparky" by his many Friends was predeceased by his loving wife Letha Jean SPARKS (née BRUCE) in 1997. Warren was the eldest child of James and Sarah (PELLOW) SPARKS and was born on the family farm in 1909 near Princeton, Ontario. He spent most of his teaching career in Schumacher, Ontario ending it as Principal of Schumacher High School. Warren is survived by his sister Anna ELMES (the late Rupert) and is predeceased by his brothers Lindsay (Isabel SPARKS,) Earl (Jean SPARKS,) Ralph (the late Janet SPARKS) and Allan. As well Warren is predeceased by his daughter Mary (Doug ALEXANDER) of Thunder Bay and is survived by his children Shirley WEISMAN (the late Gustav WEISMAN) of Stouffville, Jim SPARKS (Karen SPARKS) of Erin and Susan HALL (Harry HALL) of Uxbridge. Warren is survived by his grandchildren Tom ALEXANDER (Vivian,) Jay ALEXANDER (Susan,) Susan ALEXANDER, Yasmin SPARKS (Bruce HALDENBY), Nadine SPARKS (David PAVAN) and David WING (Shauna WING,) Bruce HALL and Sarah HALL and by his grandchildren Kaleb ALEXANDER, Mirabai ALEXANDER, Elizabeth ALEXANDER, Ryan WING, Andrew WING, Fae ALEXANDER, Jayne ALEXANDER, Callum HALDENBY and Satya MARI. A Memorial Service of the Thanksgiving for the life of Warren will be held at the Calvary Memorial United Church, 91 Gruhn Street (at Park and Glasgow Sts.), Kitchener on Saturday afternoon 8th January at 2: 00. Louisa's gentle spirit crossed over on October 29, 2005. Born in Toronto 78 years ago, married in Montreal to the great Paul MARIANO, she raised Joseph (m. Joanne -Jocelyn,) Esther (m. Mathias - Janna and Craig), and Ruth: Home, Sweet Home! Any trials throughout her life were faced with quiet courage. Relocating to Calgary as a widow in 1991 was quite the challenge but with her sunny nature and nonjudgmental listening abilities, over the years Louisa laughed with many Friends, chatted away with her grandchildren, expanded her creative talents, volunteered, and 'seized the day' while bravely dealing with those intruding vision and health problems - so annoying! In 2003, she made a wise move by becoming a part of The Fountains of Mission 'family', i.e., everyone there. They energized her daily with kindness and harmony. By celebrating and remembering Louisa, ripples of Love will continue to impact indefinitely. Our heartfelt gratitude to longtime caregiver Bev Miller and to Dr. L.E. Silvester et al. Our thanks to 'The Nurses' - FoM, Foothills, Palliative, the Agape Hospice, etc. A thank you to whoever invented the C.D. player -- many fine musicians brought Louisa peaceful moments. It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of Cirprian (Papi, Nagypapa) at his home in Thornhill on Saturday, February 12, 2005. Beloved husband for 45 years to Eva G. Loving father to Eva, Monica (Paul MARIER) and Suzy (Dave ROCHESTER.) Devoted and cherished "Papa" to Alexine, Philip, Hayley, Tara and Kyle. He will be held dear in the hearts of all his relatives and Friends. Visitation will be held at the R.S.
