Died peacefully in his home, age 93, on Friday, November 11, 2005. We mourn a gentle, proud and devoted father and grandfather. After his wife Leida passed away in 1992, Igor continued to lead an independent life in his own home, cooking, gardening and baking his own rye bread once a month. Left to mourn are his two loving daughters, Irja (Rein) MAGI and Nora (Ilmar) WALLNER. His▼ greatest pride was his much loved and devoted grand_son Aleksander with whom he recently celebrated a 20th birthday. Igor also leaves his much loved step-granddaughters Lisa (Nick) SAMSTAG of New York, Laura (Gabriel) BINCIK in Toronto, Amy WALLNER of Calgary and Anna WALLER of Vancouver, along with his step-great-grandchildren Hanna and Julia BINCIK and Claire SAMSTAG. Mourned▼ also by godson Sven KERST in Sweden and Friends and relatives in Estonia. In 1944 Igor fled the Soviet takeover of his beloved Estonia and after difficult years in Germany and Scotland the family arrived in Canada in 1951 where he soon achieved Canadian Citizenship. He longed to see the end of Soviet tyranny in Estonia and in 1991 his dream came true. By this time Igor had become a true Canadian valuing all the freedoms this country allows. Happily he was able to visit his homeland and witness wonderful changes. A funeral service will be held in the Chapel of the Murray E. Newbigging Funeral Home, 733 Mt. Pleasant Road (south of Eglinton), on Thursday, November 17, 2005 at 11 a.m., with visitation one hour prior. According to his wishes, Igor will be cremated and laid to rest at Mount Pleasant Cemetery beside his beloved wife Leida Johanna. Lawyer and mining investor born in Hamilton, Ontario, in 1906.
After serving in the Toronto Scottish Regiment in France during the First World War, he left the army with the rank of lieutenant and went to law school. He opened a law practice in Toronto and came to know David ROBERTSON, chief of staff at Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, a doctor who shared an interest in mining investment. Together, they reopened a gold mine at Moose River, Nova Scotia, with the intention of exploiting ore-bearing columns that held up the roof of the excavation. On April 12, 1936, the two partners went underground with miner Alfred SCADDING to investigate complaints of instability in the workings. The roof collapsed, trapping all three underground. A massive rescue attempt followed. A deep hole was drilled and a pipe inserted to introduce food and water and, for the first time in history, a telephone line. Also for the first time, the forerunner of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation provided listeners with on-the-spot radio reports. MAGILL died of pneumonia before rescuers broke through.

Survived by the love of her life, Jack BINGHAM of Waterdown. Will be deeply missed by her devoted sister Gale and husband Eric (MAGINNIS.) Predeceased by her parents Robert Malcolm PEARSON and Lila Edna (Gale) CALVERT. Retired insurance and risk management executive. Beloved husband of Catherine, loving father of Suzanne RANKIN- MAGNANTE (David), West Lafayette, Indiana and Timothy RANKIN, Oakville, Ontario. He will be remembered by his cherished grandchildren, Christopher, Alexandra and Sonja along with Sonja's mother, Ulrika RANKIN (WOBER.) Following his retirement from the Royal Bank of Canada, John pursued his many diverse interests, including golf, curling, and Canadian history. He had always been a volunteer in the community; the Anglican Church, Literacy and Cancer Assistance Services of Halton Hills were his foremost concerns in retirement. Greatly missed by his many RANKIN and Luther cousins from across Canada, three nieces, Jennifer, Fiona and Andrea, he had a profound impact on many and all of us who knew him.
