DE LUCA,
Veronica
Marie
On Wednesday, January 26, 2005 our precious little girl passed
from this life to the next and into the arms of her Creator.
After a courageous battle for 22 months with a debilitating disease,
Veronice died peacefully and on her own terms. Her life was short
but full. Everyday, she enjoyed the love of her family and in
turn she imparted an abundant love of her own - a warm smile,
a sunny disposition and a will to overcome her physical challenges.
She will be greatly missed by her sister and brothers, Tera-Louise,
Antonio and Christopher; her parents Josie and Nando; by her
grandparents, Luisa, Teresa and Tonino; by her uncle Mike; by
her aunt and uncle Dora and Paolo; and all the rest of her Friends
and family. Funeral and visitation arrangements can be obtained
from the Ward Funeral Home "Woodbridge Chapel" 905-851-9100.
Condolences can be sent to veronica.deluca@wardfh.comMany heartfelt
thanks to the staff at the Hospital for Sick Children who cared
for Veronica in these last 2 months. The family would appreciate
donations to the Hospital for Sick Children, in lieu of flowers.

Plucky cancer fighter dies in Lambton crash
By Jennifer
O'BRIEN,
Free
Press
Reporter
He was going to play in the National Hockey League one day. His
heart set on that goal, 11-year-old Jalen
DAY beat a rare cancer
that struck him at goalie camp in 2003.
But yesterday, members of Sarnia's hockey community were devastated
to learn the boy known as Smiley -- the boy they had grown to
admire -- was killed in a car crash Sunday.
"This is like the cruelest possible plot twist in a movie," said
Paul BURGESS, leader of a weekly goalie clinic who shared laughs
with Jalen on the ice Saturday.
"You're waiting for the beautiful ending to happen and, all of
a sudden, something totally unexpected ruins everything,"
BURGESS
said.
Jalen, who lived in Watford with his family, was one of three
area children killed in crashes Sunday.
About 9: 30 a.m., two young sisters, Eva, 4, and Mary
FROESE,
9, died on the way to church after a van driven by their mother
went out of control on a steep hill near Port Burwell.
The girls' mother, Sara
FROESE, three teenage sisters and a male
relative suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said
yesterday.
"It's so sad. It's just a freak, sad thing," said Elgin Ontario
Provincial
Police
Const. Jennifer
WILKS.
In Lambton County, Jalen's father, David, remained in hospital
yesterday with injuries suffered in the crash that killed his
son.
The vehicle carrying them collided with another on Petrolia Line
around 7: 45 p.m. Sunday. A woman and her six-year-old son from
the other vehicle were treated in hospital.
Jalen, sidelined for a year by cancer treatments, had been back
to hockey for several months, first at the summer goalie camp,
then playing peewee in Watford and attending
BURGESS's clinics
at the Sarnia Sports and Entertainment Centre.
Everything was going just as Jalen planned,
BURGESS said.
"After he found out he had cancer (in August 2003), he told me,
'I'm going to beat cancer because I'm going to play in the National
Hockey
League someday,'
BURGESS said.
"And when he first came back, his skating was suffering because
the tumour had affected his right leg. But by Saturday morning,
I had put him with the best skaters -- that's how far he had
come.
Sarnia
Sting goalie coach Larry
LUCAS met Jalen at the 2003 goalie
camp, where the young boy learned he had a rare form of cancer
called rhabdomyosarcoma.
"Everybody▼ is in utter shock,"
LUCAS said yesterday. "To see
him beat cancer and then get a phone call at 7: 30 (a.m.) saying
he got killed... I'm really struggling with this."
Jalen was considered a local success story after his rough battle
with the brutal cancer that causes tumours to attack muscle cells.
The cancer strikes about 60 children around the world each year.
In November 2003, while Jalen was in radiation therapy, the Sting
put on a benefit hockey game before a packed arena, raising $25,000
for his family.
London
Knights assistant coach Jeff
PERRY, then with the Sting,
helped organize the game between the Ontario Hockey League team
and National Hockey League players.
Jalen dropped the puck.
Yesterday, a "devastated and numb"
PERRY recalled the day.
"It was great," he said. "The highlight was Jalen sitting beside
me in the dressing room... he looked over at me and said he didn't
want the day to end."
Students and staff at Brooke Central school in Alvinston were
grieving Jalen's death yesterday.
Principal Ann
LARSEN said she couldn't comment personally, but
read from a news release.
"Jalen... was always willing to share and express his humour
and good sportsmanship with others," the release said.
"His recent success in overcoming cancer was wellknown in the
community and his determination to overcome adversity was an
inspiration."

Great
Uncle of Hannah,
Miles, Nathaniel, Gwen, Kyla and Emma. Pete was born in Hillegom,
The Netherlands and was 11 years old when his family immigrated
to Canada. They settled in the London area with the dream of
building a business. Pete's destiny was to work in the greenhouse.
From a very young age, he loved to accompany his father to the
greenhouses where he worked. So while his parents worked elsewhere
to provide a steady income, Pete was instrumental in the growth
of the family business from its inception. Eventually he took
over the business from his parents and has steadily and successfully
built it to what it is today. Through the years he employed many
family members and students and taught them an admirable work
ethic. He worked right along with his staff and found it very
difficult when he became ill and could no longer work. Pete was
an admired Boy Scout Leader and a founding member of the London
and District Florists Association. Special thanks to Dr.
KERR,
Dr. PERERA and Mary Liz. Your compassion for and care of Pete
during his four years of treatment greatly helped ease his journey.
Also thank you to the special women (ie Nurses) of Victorial
Hospital who helped him through his final week. Pete touched
the lives of all who knew him! He will be sadly missed and fondly
remembered. Cremation has taken place. Memorial visitation will
be held in the Westview Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Road North

will then be inurned at St. Peter's Cemetery. Memorial contributions
