LEGGET, Robert, 1994 -- Died This Day
Tuesday, April 26, 2005, Page R5
Engineer and designer born in Liverpool, England, in 1905.
In 1929, he arrived in Canada to work on a hydro project in Northern Ontario and stayed on to develop a national building code. After the Second World War, he predicted a construction boom and argued that buildings needed to be safer. He became the driving force to make Canada the only country of its size to possess one code. He served as the director of the National Research Council's division of building research from 1947 until his retirement in 1969, he made Canadian houses and public buildings safer. Canadians also see his work whenever they enter a building by way of a wheelchair ramp, travel on the Toronto subway, hear a smoke alarm or see a construction worker wearing a hard hat.
