Stranded by ill health, Australian athlete dies
By Melinda
DALTON,
Free
Press
Reporter
The Australian athlete stranded for the last month in a London
hospital far from home has died.
Mark SHERIDAN, who had a heart attack shortly after arriving
in London, died about 6 p.m. Monday at University Hospital in
London.
"(Doctors) thought he'd last a bit longer, but he went peacefully,"
his mother, June
SHERIDAN, said yesterday.
June SHERIDAN made her first trip out of Australia last Thursday
to be with her son here.
The mother was by his side when he died.
"Sunday, he had a really good day. When we went in (Monday),
he wasn't good at all, but I didn't expect he'd go so quick,"
she said.
Mark SHERIDAN arrived in London on July 15, one day before his
40th birthday, to defend his gold-medal title in 10-pin bowling
at the World Transplant Games.
Before he could compete, the two-time kidney recipient had a
heart attack.
He was marooned at University Hospital for more than a month,
unable to afford the cost of an air ambulance home -- about $120,000
U.S. -- and not medically fit to take a commercial flight. Neither
his insurance company nor government medical coverage in Australia
would pay for the flight.
Last week, several Londoners joined
SHERIDAN's
Friends and family
in Australia to help raise the money to fly him home by air ambulance.
Chris and Michele
GOULD, who became good Friends with
SHERIDAN's
Australian teammates while they were in London, organized a raffle
through their company, 2000 Tours.
Chris GOULD visited
SHERIDAN in hospital Monday to relay stories
of his teammates' travels.
"I said, 'Your boys don't play table tennis very well, but they
can sure down a pint," he recalled telling
SHERIDAN hours before
he died in his sleep. "That made him smile."
The cause of death wasn't known last night.
GOULD and his wife have decided to go ahead with the fundraising
raffle to help ease the financial burden left on
SHERIDAN's family.
"His government and his insurance have just left him here. This
is the least that I can do,"
GOULD said.
The London Rotary Club will likely go ahead with fundraising
plans as well, said club secretary Murray
WOOD.
SHERIDAN's mother said she's grateful for the help she's received
in London, but she's still left with the problem of getting her
son back to Australia, which could cost more than $10,000 Cdn.
"This is the last thing we expected so soon," she said. "Now,
all I've got to do is get him home."
The local organizing committee of the Transplant Games will offer
some financial help to transport
SHERIDAN's body, said Nancy
LAWRENCE, spokesperson for the games. She wouldn't say how much
money the games would offer.
The Australian High Commission in Ottawa said a representative
from the consulate met with
SHERIDAN's mother yesterday.
"During the whole case, we were in constant contact with Mark
and the doctors," said Lin
FOWLER, vice-consul at the Australian
High Commission.
"We were satisfied that he was receiving the best care. We are
now providing counselling (and) looking into options for the
trip back."
Fundraising Raffle
- An Ultimate Leafs Package, worth more than $1,100, will be
raffled off September 12, with all proceeds going to the
SHERIDANs.
- The $20 tickets can be purchased by credit card by calling
474-7706 or 1-888-869-0506, or at 2000 Tours' 299 Springbank
Dr. office. See www.2ktours.com for more information and prize
