TOPLEY,
Enid
Mary (née
TAILOR/TAYLOR)
Mrs.
Enid
Mary
TOPLEY passed away very peacefully in her ninety-second
year at the Beverly Centre in Calgary on Friday, April 22, 2005
with her daughter Marilyn at her side. She chose to leave us
on the very same day as her beloved husband of fiftyseven years
Herb did, seven years earlier, even within the same hour. Enid
is survived and will be deeply missed by her daughter Carol
JARVIS
(George) of Nanoose Bay, British Columbia; son Steve
TOPLEY
(Debra)
of Tsawwassen, British Columbia; daughter Marilyn
COSTA
(Renzo)
of Calgary; as well as her dear grandchildren, Drew
JARVIS
(Sara,)
Andrea JARVIS
(Nimi
LANGER,) Heather
TOPLEY and greatgrandchildren
Jordan and Rafael, all of Vancouver. Born in Leduc, Alberta on
November 19, 1913, Enid lived a long, full life in Calgary. In
her formative years, she traveled extensively with her family
on their famous road trips throughout North America. Her father,
G.L. TAILOR/TAYLOR, founder of Taylor Signs, being an accomplished artist
was capturing the magnificent landscapes as they set about exploring
new horizons. These trips nurtured her lifelong interest in nature,
camping, hiking and outdoor pursuits. This introduction to both
art and travel continued throughout her whole life. Sports played
a prominent part in her life with swimming, skating, golfing
and ultimately speed skating, winning two provincial championships
in that sport. As an adult, curling became the new undertaking
and she enjoyed many years playing at the Glencoe Club in the
ladies and the mixed leagues. When she decided to hang up the
'broom', she participated for many years on the administrative
side of curling starting at the Glencoe and working her way up
to various positions travelling around Alberta and the country
in the capacity of chairperson of both the Alberta Senior Ladies
Curling Association and Southern Alberta Ladies Curling Association.
Enid had a modest nature and yet was very independent, a woman
ahead of her time. She was an astute businesswoman in real estate
and property management. To Enid, her family was everything and
her primary focus. Her children were her pride and joy and this
was extended when grandchildren arrived. In her later years,
the biggest thrill of all was becoming a great-grandmother to
Jordan and Rafael. Friends and relatives are welcome to join
the family in a celebration of Enid's life at a reception at
the Glencoe Club (636 - 29th Avenue S.W., Calgary) on Saturday,
April 30, 2005 at 2: 00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations
made directly to the Canadian National Institute of the Blind
(15 Colonel Baker Place Nebraska, Calgary, Alberta T2E 4Z3) would
be appreciated by the family. To email condolences leydens@arbor

DOWNS filled life with music
The musician, who died Saturday, built the local music scene.
By Peter GEIGEN-
MILLER,
Free
Press
Reporter
Band leader, owner of a popular restaurant, recording company
entrepreneur. Johnny
DOWNS made his mark on London in many ways
but probably will best be remembered as leader of the Johnny
Downs Orchestra, a band that played sweet sounds for decades
of dancers.
DOWNS died Saturday at Saint Thomas-Elgin General Hospital. He
was 83.
"It was a privilege playing with Johnny," says Londoner George
LANGFORD, a trumpet player.
LANGFORD has fond memories of playing with the
DOWNS orchestra
for several years.
One of their venues was the downtown Holiday Inn, now the Hilton
London.
"We'd go into the ballroom and set up and start blowing," he
remembers. "It was fun. Music is so much fun."
DOWNS started out playing the violin but switched to the saxophone
in the 1930s.
Soon he had formed his own band and at age 17 he and his group
landed a summer gig at the Kincardine Pavilion.
The band, billed as Canada's leading college band, played on
campuses and at such big-time dance pavilions as the Summer Garden
in Port Dover, Wonderland Gardens in London and the legendary
Stork Club in Port Stanley.
LANGFORD remembers being a bit nervous about playing with
DOWNS.
"When you're playing with a good brass section, you have to be
right on, note for note. I'd stand up and take the odd solo.
I just had a great time."
LANGFORD says
DOWNS had great style as a band leader. "He was
very smooth at the microphone."
Another claim to fame for
DOWNS was his Latin Quarter restaurant,
on what was then Maple Street, now part of Dufferin Avenue.
DOWNS ran the popular eatery and watering hole with his wife,
Dorothy, for nearly 40 years. It closed in 1990 and the building
was demolished.
The place attracted legions of loyal customers, an eclectic crowd
that included university students, lawyers, the theatre crowd
and musicians.
And DOWNS had running a restaurant down to an art, said singer-songwriter
Mike MULHERN, who worked at the Latin Quarter for a short time
in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
"It was a great place to work at the time because he was such
a well respected musican and he would give you a lot of tips,"
said MULHERN. "And he had the whole night planned out for his
diners...."
The first hour, bands were expected to play softly, without inciting
patrons into applause -- which would interrupt their dinner.
As the night went on, bands would pick up the tempo to entice
diners to stick around for dancing and drinks. By closing time,
the place would be hopping with lively music, said
MULHERN.
"It was very interesting and a helpful place to be," he said.
"The Latin Quarter was pretty much the top of the game."
One attraction was the yard of ale, a tall glass of brew. Downing
one was an initiation rite.
Downing one in a single sitting earned customers a commemorative
card.
DOWNS also helped make London the headquarters for Capitol Records
Canada.
Starting in 1949, the fabled label's recordings were manufactured
in London, with
DOWNS handling cross-Canada sales. The plant
produced five million discs before the operation moved to Toronto
in 1954.
DOWNS is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy, son Tom of
New Hampshire and daughter, Jayne, of Port Stanley.
A memorial service will be held today at 3 p.m. at the Westview
Funeral Chapel, 709 Wonderland Rd.
