He was Mr. Sauble Beach
Community mourns Dan
KIRKLAND, a tireless fundraiser and its
unofficial mayor
By Bill HENRY,
Sun
Times
Staff,
Page A1
Sauble Beach has lost a tireless charity fundraiser and community
booster.
Dan KIRKLAND, 51, was South Bruce Peninsula's Volunteer of The
Year last year. He died suddenly at his home on Main Street Wednesday
morning.
Mr. KIRKLAND was seen almost daily riding his bicycle around
town, shoveling snow and cutting lawns for seniors, or selling
raffle tickets downtown for a long list of charities. He was
known unofficially as the mayor of Sauble Beach, his friend Mark
WUNDERLICH said Thursday.
"He's just one of the fixtures, one of the main characters that
made Sauble Beach Sauble Beach. There's no other way to put it,"
WUNDERLICH said.
Mr. KIRKLAND was raised in Kitchener and came to Sauble as a
young man, living since then in the family cottage not far from
the community's landmark water slide, his cousin Jay
KIRKLAND
said.
He would have been in
KIRKLAND's
Sauble grocery store this week
selling crocuses for charity, where the store has set up a display
to continue the charity sales in his honour. His cousin's goal
was to eventually raise $100,000 for various charities and had
passed the $80,000 mark,
KIRKLAND said.
"He was here at least two to three days a week selling tickets
for whatever organization was raising funds at the time. He's
done an awful lot,"
KIRKLAND said. "He's going to be missed."
Mr. KIRKLAND would often sell his raffle tickets at a local bank
or at a prominent spot on the beach. He attended council sessions,
helped at pancake breakfasts and worked the gates at ball tournaments
and other sporting events.
"Any events that were going on, Dan was there somewhere. He just
took a real old-fashioned interest in the betterment of his community,"
said WUNDERLICH, who worked with his friend at numerous chamber
of commerce and community functions.
"He was an incredible conscientious' worker. He took his time
but the job was done the way it was supposed to be done,"
WUNDERLICH
said.
"Everybody at Sauble Beach loved Dan and respected Dan. He was
one of the main fixtures at Sauble Beach and Sauble Beach right
now is flying at half mast. He was a good friend of mine and
he was a great guy and an asset to the community and we have
truly lost one of our own."
Mr. KIRKLAND's
Friends may call at the Downs and son Funeral
Home in Hepworth today from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A funeral
will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. from Zion Amabel United Church
in Sauble Beach.

John Garfield
KIRKPATRICK
By Mary CALDER,
Helen
KIRKPATRICK, Margaret
KIRKPATRICK, Monday,
January 3, 2005 - Page A14
Son, brother, husband, father, uncle, friend, accountant, tennis
player, volunteer. Born February 16, 1950 in London, Ontario
Died October 30, 2004, in Ottawa, of cancer, aged 54.
John KIRKPATRICK was our brother, the only
son of Eileen and
Garfield KIRKPATRICK of London. We grew up in a close-knit household
that highly valued extended family. We regularly travelled to
Mount Forest, Ontario, to spend weekends and holidays with our
Dad's family. One of our happiest childhood memories is taking
The Canadian to Alberta to visit with our Mother's family, a
bold adventure for the time! John was the quiet one at family
gatherings, but he was an active player whether in canasta tournaments
at Grandma's on Saturday nights, on the family Christmas "human
pyramid" team or on camping trips to parks across Canada with
his children, his nephews and nieces, sisters and brothers-in-law.
Growing up, John spent every summer at our Uncle Jim's farm in
Mount Forest. He cherished this move from an urban, sister-dominated
world in London to the rural, male world where he helped with
farm chores and even had his own calves -- a boy's dream world!
The lifelong bond between John and his cousin, Mervyn, was formed
during these happy summers.
Dad was so proud when John became an accountant, following in
his own footsteps. When Dad became ill during one busy income
tax season, John took time from his own accounting work to return
to London to run Dad's business.
John's life was blessed when he met and married Hélène
PICARD
and was welcomed into that close-knit family. He worked to become
proficient at French, the first language of his in-laws. He was
an important member of their family, and ours.
John's three children, Kevin, Nora and Lynn, were precious to
him. It was especially hard for John when, as a young father,
he developed multiple sclerosis and was not even strong enough
to lift his young son. John battled with everything he had. Years
later, when facing lymphoma, he told his wife, Hélène, that he
had negotiated a deal with God at that time. He asked for three
years, time enough to see what kind of person his new daughter,
Nora, might become.
The multiple sclerosis went into remission, a remission that
lasted the rest of his life. John credited his fighting spirit
to our mother. Her belief, that there is a silver lining behind
every cloud, helped him to pursue that silver lining. Her positive
attitude and commitment to health and fitness inspired his own
quest for a healthy life.
The energy that John invested in becoming healthy gave him the
gift of many years. During those 20 years, he spent endless hours
with his children -- cycling, roller-blading, playing ball, ping-pong,
and cards, travelling, camping, reading, and cooking. He modelled
the healthy lifestyle he wanted them to emulate; he saw them
become adults. As well, John worked diligently as a volunteer
for the multiple sclerosis society. He was a valued employee,
a loyal friend, an active member of his tennis club.
This past summer, John faced another battle: lymphoma. Again,
John fought with everything he had. He believed he would make
it and his family believed he would, but it could not be so.
Surrounded by family -- his wife, children, sisters and in-laws
he died on October 30. The last words he heard were Nora's,
"We love you, Dad." He closed his eyes and passed away.
John was a special person. Along with his many successes and
celebrations, he also faced trials, sadness and difficulty. He
met challenges with a positive attitude and looked for the silver
lining. John was a good person, a gentle man, a fighter -- and
a special brother.
Mary, Helen, and Margaret are John's sisters.
