Man charged in wife's drowning death
Body of woman, 60, found in bathtub
By Tim LAI,
With a report from
CFTO News,
Monday,
July 25, 2005,
Page A11
A 60-year-old man charged with first-degree murder in the drowning
death of his wife will appear in court tomorrow.
On Friday night, police responded to an incident at 26 Underhill
Drive, near the Don Valley Parkway and Lawrence Avenue East,
for a possible suicide.
When officers arrived, Patricia
KIRK, 60, was discovered dead
in her bathtub.
A postmortem examination conducted on Saturday determined drowning
to be the cause of death, Toronto Police said.
Raymond KIRK, the victim's husband, was inside their home and
was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Yesterday, residents of this quiet Don Mills townhouse complex
sat and read in their yards as if it was any sleepy summer Sunday.
But the yellow police tape and officers on duty marred the suburban
scene.
Police forensics teams were busy working inside Unit 305 in the
Cloisters of the Don.
One neighbour who has known the couple for more than 35 years
and didn't want to be identified said they were quiet and kept
to themselves.
"They'd be the last couple I'd think of that would have any problems,"
he said.
Another neighbour, who also has known the couple over three decades
and also didn't want to be identified, expressed dismay over
what happened.
He didn't socialize with the
KIRKs on a regular basis, he said,
but added they were very friendly.
Mrs. KIRK, who had suffered from chronic back pain for several
years, was able to leave the house only sporadically, he said.
But he had thought she was on the mend.
Behind police lines was the
KIRKs' meticulous and colourful garden,
which the neighbour said the couple took tremendous pride in
maintaining.
The KIRKs have two adult sons.
The death is Toronto's 34th homicide of the year and the second
in a week in which a husband has been charged in connection with
his wife's death.
Last
Sunday, 41-year-old Hafiza
CHOWDFURY died at St. Michael's
Hospital of blunt-force head injuries.
Rafat CHOWDFURY, 46, has been charged with second-degree murder.

DEETH,
Hazel
Evelyn (née
WHIMSTER) (1912-2005)
Passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 4th, 2005 at 'The
Victorian' retirement residence (1773 Feltham Rd), Victoria,
British Columbia in her 93rd year. She will be greatly missed
by Wilf, her loving husband of 65 treasured years and by her
two sons, Paul and his wife Carol (Oakville, Ontario) and Alan
(Vancouver). Hazel was the youngest of six children of the late
Dr. Murdo A.
WHIMSTER and Margaret Ann
KIRK of Hamiota, Manitoba.
In her 20's, she moved to Toronto where she met Wilf. They began
their family in Ottawa, and later moved to Vancouver where they
resided for over 40 years. Later, she enjoyed an invigorating
life for 15 years on Vancouver Island. She took every opportunity
to explore all there was to offer. She made many Friends over
the years, both in Ontario and British Columbia, being active
in the United Church Women and Couples Clubs of the United Church
of Canada, and as a member and organist of a chapter of the Eastern
Star. Her talents were numerous in the arts and crafts: music,
painting and needlework to mention a few. She was a caregiver
of the finest kind to family and to Friends, using her skills
as a good listener to assist those who needed a boost. Hazel
was always open to developing new Friendships while still retaining
long standing ones. Humour was to her, a necessary ingredient
for a happy life. Special thanks go to the staff at 'The Victorian'
retirement residence who made the last 5 years of her life very
enjoyable.
In Victoria, a Memorial Tea will take place on Friday, September
23rd, 2005 at 'The Victorian' residence (Feltham Rd) at 2 p.m.
(250-477-1912). In Vancouver, a memorial service will be conducted
at Ryerson United Church (45th Ave. and Yew St.) on Monday, September
26th, 2005 at 2 p.m. (604-266-5377) where her ashes will be placed
in the Memorial Garden. If desired, remembrances may be made
to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to a charity of your choice.
