Social advocate's legacy lives on
By April KEMICK,
Free
Press
Reporter
Known for her contributions to affordable housing, Ormah
GIBSON
worked tirelessly to help Londoners in need.
GIBSON, who died May 25, will be remembered with a new downtown
housing development named in her honour.
Her legacy also survives in the fond memories family members
and others carry about
GIBSON.
"She was always big on helping people that were somehow disadvantaged,
whether it was women, low-income families or immigrants," daughter
Ormah-Lee JACOBS said.
Born in Ottawa in 1925,
GIBSON raised her three children, Hugh,
Ormah-Lee and Laura, in London with husband Howard.
She obtained a master's degree in social work in Toronto in 1956.
After working as a social worker in Toronto and Saskatoon,
GIBSON
and her husband moved to London in 1958.
GIBSON helped found Homes Unlimited, Urban League of London,
Youth Opportunities Unlimited, Youth Employment Counselling Services,
Heritage London Foundation and London Community Resource Centre.
"She found ways to use her skill and training as a social worker
to help other people," Howard said.
She was key to establishing the school of social work at King's
University College and served as president of the Ontario Association
of Professional Social Workers.
"She was an amazing lady," said London's housing director Louise
STEVENS, adding it's fitting a new affordable housing development
will be named after her.
"She was a really caring person,"
JACOBS said. "She always made
you think of the other person's perspective."

OLIVER,

A gentle, fun-loving and deeply devoted family man, Jerry
OLIVER
passed away peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital on Wednesday,
June 29, 2005. He will be deeply missed by Sally, his wife and

and their families; Scott, Denice, and Nicolas
OLIVER of Roseau,

Kari and Corey

OLIVER
of Winnipeg. Jerry was predeceased by his grand_son Jake Gerald
OLIVER, but is survived by his sister, Valerie
JACOBS of Bloomfield
Hills, Michigan, many nieces, nephews, extended family members,
and Friends too numerous to count.
Born in London, Ontario on June 21, 1934, Jerry was the son of
Forde and Kathryn
OLIVER. He grew up in London, where he attended
St. George Elementary School and Central Collegiate High School.
Jerry was a football player with the Golden Ghosts. A full football
scholarship provided him with the opportunity to attend Clemson
University in South Carolina, where he majored in business and
graduated with a Bachelor of Science. Jerry signed with the Montreal
Alouettes of the Canadian Football League but much more important
in his life was the love for his family. His second career was
as a Brew Master. He was a member of the Master Brewers Association
of the Americas, having trained at Wallerstein's in New York.
He was the master brewer at Labatt's in Winnipeg for 15 years
before leaving to start his own business supplying the beverage
industry. He was also a member of the Khartum Shrine Temple and
the Nilestown Masonic Lodge. Jerry was an avid hunter and fisherman
who loved the outdoors and the cottage he built at Lake of the
Woods. He was also a huge sports fan. While he particularly enjoyed
watching boxing and golf, he saved his greatest cheers of support
for his children and grandchildren. Even when Alzheimer and Parkinson's
were taking their toll on Jerry, his essential good nature shone
through. He somehow always managed a warm greeting for old Friends.
The family would like to thank our family doctor Dr. M. Shnider,
the staff at the Victoria Hospital and the many homecare workers
who assisted in helping us make the most of his time with us.
A celebration of Jerry's life will be held on Monday, July 4,
2005 at 2: 00 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home, Hwy. #1 E. at
Navin Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Alzheimer
