PIKE, Mildred Lillian (née BROWN)
(November 17, 1922-December 7, 2005)
Suddenly and tragically on December 7, 2005 as the result of massive stroke followed by a car accident while driving home from a family weekend. Our Mom, Mildred PIKE (née BROWN,) has now gone to be with her love, our Dad, Bill. Mom leaves behind her devastated extended family of Karen MUGFORD (Al,) Bill PIKE (Anne) and her "baby," Jim PIKE (Regina.) She was a doting and devoted Grandmother to Rory FITZPATRICK (Dianne,) Neil FITZPATRICK (Stephanie,) Joshua PIKE, Jennifer PIKE, Justin PIKE and Emily PIKE. Her great-grandchildren were her special loves, Jackson, Katie, Julianne, and William... How lucky they were to have had her as their Great-Grammi. Mom was also a special Grandma to Karen BISHOP, Michael MUGFORD (Donna), Lynn KLUGMAN (Steve), Diane BRENNAN (Tom), Janine SKORUPA (Charlie) and Paula MUGFORD. Loving step-great-grandma to Sherrie, Brian, Paul, Jeanette, Jaden, Laura, Jill, Tyler, Erin, Chris and Michael. She leaves behind in Newfoundland, her surviving sisters, Clarice HIGHMORE (Jack,) Daphne SMITH (Azariah, deceased,) Irene HIGHMORE (Les, deceased,) sister-in-law Floss BROWN (Bill,) sister-in-law May HUTCHINGS (Sel,) and Mary HUTCHINGS (Len, deceased) and all their families. Very special Aunt to Pat BROWN and Don and Louise SMITH. Mom was always forever a lady who worked tirelessly for her church, St. James Anglican in Fenelon Falls, as well as their Community Care. After Dad died, her many Friends, especially those at 70 Murray, became her life-line and she enjoyed so much their card games and bus trips together. We are all so grateful for having been part of her life. Our wish is that every child should know the love and devotion of a Mother and Grandmother like our Mom. She will be missed more than words can say and our lives will never be the same. To One who bears the sweetest name And adds luster to the same Long life she had and there's no other Could take the place of our dear Mother. Rest in Peace Sweet Lady. In accordance with Mom's wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday, December 17, 11: 00 a.m., St. James Anglican Church, 19 Bond Street E., Fenelon Falls. Visitation with the family at 10: 00 a.m. While flowers are always appreciated, the family would be grateful for donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation.

Fatality victim identified
By Kelly PEDRO, Free Press Reporter
A woman struck by at least three cars and killed while walking on Highway 401 early yesterday was from British Columbia but had been living in London, provincial police say.
Police don't know how long Angela Dawn HUTCHINSON/HUTCHISON, 26, was living in London with a roommate or how she got on the busy highway after midnight Sunday.
Drugs or alcohol may have played a factor, Ontario Provincial Police Sgt. Dave REKTOR said.
Several drivers called police after spotting the woman walking in the middle of the east lanes of the 401 east of Highway 73.
While police were responding, they received another call saying the woman had been struck by at least three cars on the highway.
Police said HUTCHINSON/HUTCHISON was killed instantly.
They used forensic techniques to identify HUTCHINSON/HUTCHISON, who had been wearing a dark knapsack but whose clothing had been torn away
Police are investigating how she got on the highway and are asking anyone with information to call them at 1-888-310-1122.

Beloved teacher mourned
By Robin MacLENNAN, Tuesday, September 20, 2005
Mandy RAY spent the last two weeks getting to know the children in her Grade 6 class, thrilled to be starting a new school year.
Now the students at Alcona Glen Elementary School are learning how to deal with the sudden death of the popular teacher.
RAY, 27, was killed on the weekend when the car she was driving ran off Highway 26 near Minesing, hitting a culvert and rolling several times.
Huronia-West Ontario Provincial Police officers spotted the Volkswagen Jetta in a farm field early Sunday morning.
Mandy was pronounced dead at the scene.
“She was a lovely, lovely lady,” said Alcona Glen principal Jackie KAVANAGH.
“Everyone here is really sad today and we're trying to help the kids.&rdquo
Counsellors from the Simcoe County District School Board Crisis Response Team spent the day at the school, talking to staff and students, and encouraging them to share their grief.
“This is a young, beloved teacher on staff and it was quite a shock to hear the news,” said board communications officer Debbie CLARKE.
“The crisis counsellors are at the school to help them work through the shock and to get them to talk about their feelings.
“The school community is really like a family and a member of the Alcona Glen family has been lost.&rdquo
Mandy started her teaching career at the Alcona school five years ago as a new graduate who excelled at Nipissing University in North Bay.
“She knew she wanted to be a teacher since she was in Grade 4,&rdquo said Mandy's mom Dagmar.
“That's why she worked so hard and did so well at school. She knew what she wanted to do when she was very young.&rdquo
Graduating with marks over 90 per cent at Barrie North Collegiate, Mandy breezed through university and then returned home to Barrie where she lived in an apartment at her parents' Newton Street home.
Neighbours were devastated by news of her death.
“Everybody's shattered,” said next-door neighbour Judy HUTCHINSON/HUTCHISON. “She was such a good person. We all watched her grow from an adorable child into a responsible teen and then into a lovely young woman.
“She had a beautiful smile and eyes that really lived. They sparkled.&rdquo
Police don't know why Mandy's car went off the road, but they said her wheels touched the south shoulder of the highway and then the car crossed both lanes and drove into the north ditch.
“They told us that she went on the shoulder and then over-corrected to get back on the road,” said her dad Gerry RAY. “It was just the wrong place to do that, because there was such a deep ditch and the car flipped over.&rdquo
The flags at Alcona Glen flew at half-mast Monday in the young teacher's honour.
Inside, the atmosphere was sombre as counsellors met with Mandy's distraught students.
“The counsellors helped us feel a bit better,” classmates said as they left the school. Students spent the afternoon working together with crisis counsellors to assemble photos and thoughts into a memory book that will be given to Mandy's family.
“She was really nice,” one girl said, wiping her tears. “She always listened to whatever we had to say and she was lots of fun.&rdquo
An avid sports fan and participant, Mandy coached the junior girls basketball team at Alcona Glen. She grew up playing baseball in the Barrie Minor Baseball Association along with her brother Chris and their dad who volunteered many hours to the league.
“She liked to follow her brother,” Gerry said, smiling at his wife as they sat quietly outside the family home Monday evening. “That's what she really liked to do, follow around her brother.&rdquo
Friends describe Mandy as a very focused, determined person who eagerly shared her love of learning with youngsters at her school.
“I could often look over on a Saturday night and see her on her computer working on school things,” HUTCHINSON/HUTCHISON said.
“She loved her job.&rdquo
And when the neighbour looked outside at about 3 a.m. Sunday, she remembers thinking it was strange that Mandy's car wasn't in the driveway.
“Then I saw the police cruiser pull up just after 8 o'clock and I thought ‘Oh, no. What's happened?
“My husband went outside and when he came back I asked him if everything was Okay. He just bit his lip and his eyes welled up. He couldn't speak for a few minutes, and he just shook his head.&rdquo
Mandy is survived by her parents Dagmar and Gerry RAY of Barrie, brother Christian RAY of Toronto, and grandparents Edith and the late William RAY and Helga MESKENAS of Barrie.
Visitation will be held at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, Wednesday from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and a service is scheduled in the chapel Thursday at 11 a.m.

HUTCHINSON/HUTCHISON, Edna Elizabeth "Betty" (née MADILL)
It is with appropriate reverence and muted celebration that we announce the passing of our dear mother on March 14, 2005. In her 89th year, she died peacefully following a week of care at the William Osler Health Centre - Etobicoke Campus. We all have splendid memories of the contributions she made to so many in so many ways, not the least were her sons and daughters, 13 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. She will be especially remembered by sons Frederick David and Gordon Douglas, and their wives Lorna and Leslie, son-in-law E. Joseph (Joe) CALNAN, her brother Harold Stuart MADILL and wife Josephine, and nephew Ralph HUTCHINSON/HUTCHISON. Daughters Elizabeth Ann and Barbara Jane CALNAN, and her brother Ralph MADILL, predeceased her. A top-ranked golfer, she shared her joy for the sport with the Humber Valley "Swingers" until she retired her clubs only a few years ago. She was also in high demand as a contract bridge partner with several clubs. According to her wishes, there will be no funeral service or reception at this time; her ashes will be interred at Victoria Lawn Cemetery in St. Catharines on July 2nd at which time a celebration of her life will take place. Anyone wishing to remember her, is invited to make a contribution to the Canadian Cancer Society (Research), or in her name with the charity of choice.
