Methanol mistake leaves man dead

Oshawa -- An Oshawa man who died Sunday of methanol poisoning thought he had been drinking homemade alcohol he had gotten from Friends, his mother said yesterday.
A vodka bottle filled with methanol was passed to Jeff HUSTINS, 24, through a series of Friends, Deborah HUSTINS said in a telephone phone interview.
The friend who gave the bottle to Mr. HUSTINS thought it contained homemade alcohol. It was not clear where the mix-up occurred.
When police recovered the bottle, there was still methanol in it, Ms. HUSTINS said.
"It tasted like alcohol, it smelled like alcohol.... That's what everyone assumed it was."
Methanol -- also known as methyl alcohol -- is clear, colourless and has a slight odour. It is an ingredient in products such as antifreeze, glass cleaner, paints and varnishes. Methyl hydrate, a more potent version of methyl alcohol, is sold in hardware stores.
Mr. HUSTINS drank the methanol for three straight nights, his mother said. On the third night -- Thursday -- he went to a house party where he had no more than one glass of the methanol, she said.
The party was at the apartment of Rich DESROCHES and started after 11 p.m. Mr. HUSTINS, Mr. DESROCHES, 36, and another friend, Dave GOODCHILD, 33, each had the methyl alcohol mixed with orange juice, Mr. DESROCHES said.
"Nobody knew it was methanol," said another man at the party, Kim WRIGHT, 38.
Ms. HUSTINS said she checked on her son Saturday morning and he looked hung over. When she heard that Mr. DESROCHES had similar symptoms, she called an ambulance.
Once at the hospital, Mr. HUSTINS, who had epilepsy, began having seizures. He fell into a coma Saturday night and died Sunday morning.
"I'm hanging in; I'm still in shock, but the full thing hasn't hit me yet," his mother said. "This was my only child."
Mr. DESROCHES and Mr. GOODCHILD also went to hospital but recovered.
Durham Police Sergeant Paul McCURDIN said the death was accidental and police were not planning to lay charges.
Mr. HUSTINS had just moved into an apartment on Normandy Street, near his mother. Yesterday, residents were signing sympathy cards for Ms. HUSTINS.
Mr. HUSTINS's funeral is scheduled for Friday.

Dearly loved by son Donald and Shirley STEWARD/STEWART/STUART of Shedden, grandchildren Ron and Linda STEWARD/STEWART/STUART of Newbury, Donna and Jim DOWDING of Strathroy, Pat and Larry HUSTON of Thamesville, John and Barb STEWARD/STEWART/STUART of Dorchester, Don and Jill STEWARD/STEWART/STUART of Strathroy,▲ Mary▲ Kay▲ and Tim BURT of Fingal, and 13 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. Also survived by one brother Lloyd HILLMAN (Martha▲) of Comber and sister-in-law Dorothy HILLMAN of Leamington. Predeceased by 4 sisters and 4 brothers. Relatives and Friends were received at the Van Heck Funeral Home, 172 Symes Street, Glencoe, on Sunday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. where the funeral service was held on Monday, January 31 at 1: 30 p.m. Interment Appin Cemetery. Dear mother of Marlene and Ray FISHER of Wardsville, John and Dieanna HUSTON, Janet▲ and Ivan McCALLUM, all of Melbourne. Loving grandmother of Carolyn McMILLAN, Brian FISHER, Robert FISHER, Jackie FONGER, Shannon KAMPSTRA, Lori ARDIEL, Michael McCALLUM, and Monica McNAUGHTON. Lovingly remembered by her 19 great-grandchildren. Also survived by 2 sisters, Leona MARR and Margaret McLEOD. Predeceased▲ by one grand_son, Bradley FISHER; 3 sisters, Vera WILSON, Mabel▲ PETTIT, Audrey EARLEY; and one brother, William FOSTER. Of Melbourne and formerly of Calgary, passed away in her 81st year at Four Counties Hospital on Fri., November 25, 2005. Beloved wife of the late John McDOUGALL of Calgary. Dear mother of Robert and Jeannie ESSEY of Regina, Dieanna and John HUSTON of Melbourne, and Cheryl and Robert TETREAU of Calgary. Cherished grandmother of 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Sister of Eldon WALKER of Adrian, Michigan, and the late William WALKER. Also survived by many nieces and nephews and her best friend, Mickey. Visitation at Denning Bros. Funeral Home, Strathroy, on Thursday, December 1 from 7-9 p.m. where funeral service will be held on Friday, December 2 at 1: 30 p.m. with Reverend Richard GOLDEN officiating. Interment in Longwood Cemetery. A tree will be planted as a living memorial to Gloria.

JOHANNESSON, James Ernest
Passed away suddenly on April 15, 2005, at age 74. Cherished husband of 49 years to Carole Anne (née HUSTON.) Loving father and doting grandpa to David, his wife Mary and their children Michelle and James; Karen, her husband Vic and their children Daniel and Laura; Michael, his wife Cathy and their children Taylor and Emma and Michael's daughter Vee Anne. Many were touched by his zest for life and his interest in those around him. Born in Winnipeg, Jimijo lived a rich life. He retired as an executive of Royal Bank of Canada in 1987. He cultivated many Friendships while enjoying his favourite pastimes of curling, most recently at the Oakville Curling Club, and golf, most recently at the Oakville Golf Club. A private service will be held for immediate family only. A reception will be held at Oakville Golf Club, 1154 Sixth Line Rd., Oakville, on Wednesday April 20, 2005, from 4-6 p.m. for Friends to come and share memories. Please no flowers.

Formerly of Toronto, passed away, peacefully, at Guelph General Hospital, on Wednesday, September 21, 2005, in his 82nd year. Beloved husband of Tina of Waterloo for almost 60 years. Dad to Nora HUSTWITT and her husband Ron of Waterloo and Jon DEVETH of Orillia. Cherished Opa to Sarah WHALEY and her husband Ben, Adam HUSTWITT and his wife Dianne, Josh DEVETH and his partner Nina and Amie DEVETH. Revered Great-Opa to Indigo, Jack, Jacoby, Ella and Ava. Survived by two brothers and three sisters and their families in Holland. Tony retired from Sears Canada after 35 years of service. Suddenly, at Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital, on Saturday, September 10, 2005, Alex Sandor HERI Sr., of R.R.#4, Mt. Brydges, in his 78th year. Beloved husband of Pearl HERI. Dear father of Alex Jr. and Joe, both of R.R.#4, Mt. Brydges. Predeceased by his parents, Joseph HERI (1961) and Daru MARIA (1970) and mother and father-in-law Pearl POROSKA (1994) and Alex NEMETH (1984). Remembered fondly by several relatives overseas, as well as the Nagy family of Hernadnemet. Also remembered by Pearls sister Lovel LAJOSNE. Predeceased by nephew Lajos LOVEL (2005) and survived by his family. Sadly missed by cousins Sandor and Joan MOLNAR and family of London, as well as close Friends of the Hungarian community in the surrounding area. Also sadly missed by neighbours and Friends surrounding the family farm. Mr. HERI worked for many years with E.J. Wrights Store Fixtures in Strathroy. Friends called at the Elliott-Madill Funeral Home, Mt. Brydges, on Monday, September 12 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral service followed on Tuesday from the funeral home, commencing at 1 p.m. with Reverend Arthur HAMBLETON and Reverend Ferenc SZAPMARI officiating. Organist Connie GOUGH. Interment Mt. Brydges Cemetery. Donations to the Victorian Order of Nurses of Middlesex-Elgin, the Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital Intensive Care Unit, or the Diabetes Association would be appreciated as expressions of sympathy.
