Joyce's family regret to announce her death on Monday, March
7, 2005 at Southlake Regional Health Centre in Newmarket, Ontario
in her 75th year. Joyce battled breast cancer for many years,
always with a great deal of faith, hope and courage. Born in
Dundalk and raised in Aurora and Keswick, Ontario, Joyce was
predeceased by her beloved husband David Austin (February 25,

October 8, 1909 (Wiarton) - April 13, 2005 (Port Hope). Lieutenant-Colonel
Donovan James
HYNES, B.A, B.Pedagogy (U of T) enjoyed an outstanding
life as a teacher, a public school inspector and superintendent,
a soldier, family man and friend.
Don attended elementary and secondary schools in Walkerton, Ontario.
In 1930 he joined the staff of Toronto Public Schools and was
commissioned as an officer in the Canadian Army Reserve. In 1936
he and his best friend Harold
HEDLEY traveled extensively in
Europe including attending the Berlin Olympic Games. He later
reminisced that the coming conflict was visible during this visit.
On active service in World War 2 he served in Canada, England
and Western Europe. Following the war, while resuming his career
in Education, he commanded Central Command Personnel Selection
Unit-Reserve until his retirement with the rank of Lieutenant
Colonel.
From 1948 he served as Public School Inspector in Glengarry County,
then in Galt/Preston/Hespeler and finally in 1954 in Peterborough/Peterborough
County as Superintendent Public Schools and Superintendent of
Instruction until his retirement in 1973.
His many interests included music, woodworking and a wide range
of athletic activities including tennis, badminton curling, sailing,
swimming, and golf where he scored his hole in One at Peterborough
Golf and Country Club's 4th hole at the age of 85.
Some of the Community organizations in which he served include
Young Men's Christian Association, Children's Aid Society, St.
Andrew's United Church, Rotary Club, Buckhorn Wilderness Centre,
Kawartha Lakes Music Camp, charter member of Scott's Plains Kiwanis
Club, Peterborough Public Library Board, Red Cross Youth and
various Provincial and local education organizations.
Having met while both were teachers at John Wanless School in
North
Toronto,
Don married Dorothy Ada
ROBINSON in 1938. He was
a devoted family man to son Paul and daughter Judith

Don's Family gives thanks to the Princess Gardens in Peterborough
and Extendicare/Port Hope for their assistance in making his
final years healthy and happy.
Don was a well known and respected member of the Peterborough

Andrew's United Church, 441 Rubidge Street in Peterborough.
