RALEIGH, Shirley Ruth Howsam
78, passed away on September 1, 2005 while visiting with her family in British Columbia. She was born in St Louis, Missouri, but spent her formative years in Calgary, Alberta, where she graduated from St. Hildas' School for Girls in 1944. She received her Bachelors of Arts degree from the University of British Columbia, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta. In 1949 she married her high school sweetheart Peter S. HOWSAM in Vancouver, a marriage that lasted 52 years, until Mr. HOWSAM passed away in 2001. The HOWSAMs lived in Montreal, Philadelphia, and Toronto, before moving to Raleigh in 1970. Shirley and Peter became American Citizens in 1977. Shirley was a gracious hostess. They opened their home for many Burroughs Wellcome Co. events and will be remembered for their annual 'Boxing Day' parties. Shirley was active within her community. She was a Past President of the Raleigh Fine Arts Society, a docent at the Executive Mansion for over 33 years, a long time volunteer and supporter of the North Carolina Museum of Art - where she served on numerous committees. She also acted as Chairman of the Volunteer Board and served as Secretary on the Board of the North Carolina Art Society for over four years. She gave 12 years of dedicated service to the Duke Childrens' Golf Classic as Co-Chairman of the Spouses and Guests Committee and received the Duke Childrens' 'Volunteer of the Year Award' in 1991. Shirley continuously gave her gifts of time, talent and treasure to St. Michael's Episcopal Church, where she served in many areas. She was Past President of the Episcopal Churchwomen, a Stephen Minister and Leader. She served 3 years on the Diocesan Episcopal Churchwomen Executive Board as the United Thank Offering Coordinator. She was a member of the Iron Dukes, a supporter and great booster and fan of Duke University sports, a member of the Junior League of Raleigh, a member of North Ridge Country Club, and a member of the Monthly Investors' Club and the English Speaking Union. Shirley was a devoted mother and grandmother. She is survived by her four loving children and their spouses; Gary R. HOWSAM and his wife Brenda of Toronto, Ontario; Jeffrey P. HOWSAM and his wife Cindy of Raleigh; Valear H. FRIZELLE and her husband Larry of Toronto, Ontario; and Irish H. DUNLAP and her husband Owen, also of Raleigh. She is also survived by her seven beloved grandchildren: Melissa (27), Meryl (23), Joshua (20), Jessica (16), Peyton (11), Ali (9) and Claire (8.) She is also survived by her sister Val SHAW of Sidney, British Columbia, her brother Lance ECKARDT of Vancouver, British Columbia, her cousins Gale and Joe CURRIE of Nanoose Bay, British Columbia, Michael EAKIN of Kamloops, British Columbia, Robert KERLIN of Toronto, Ontario, along with several nephews and nieces and many dear Friends. Shirley was dearly loved and will be remembered fondly; her smile, warmth, compassion and devotion to all of those whose lives she touched will be greatly missed. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Michaels' Episcopal Church: 1520 Canterbury Road, Raleigh, North Carolina 27608 or to the charity of ones' choice. LENNAN, Dorothy " Dot" (née CARROTHERS)
"Heaven has just become richer as Dorothy "Dot" LENNAN has been received into Heaven with love, after a long, courageous battle with cancer". Dorothy died at Bluewater Health Norman Street Site, Sarnia on December 5, 2005 at the age of 84. Dorothy was an Audit Supervisor at Sears for 25 years, was president of the Sarnia Pilot Club and was a volunteer at Bluewater Health, Norman Street Site, for 12 years. She was also involved in the Relay for Life, was a valued member of the Women's Missionary Society, volunteered with Community Living at Wawanosh Enterprises and was an active member of Laurel Lea-St. Matthews Church. Dorothy met the challenges of her illness with much love and altruism. God sent angels to care for Dorothy in the persons of the very caring and concerned nurses of Palliative Care, until God was ready for her. Loving and devoted wife for 63 years of Roy E. "Bonnie" LENNAN. Loving mother of Cheryl and Barry HOWSON of Sarnia, Daryl and Faye LENNAN of Bright's Grove and Cindy DOUMA of Guelph. Dear father of Mary Jane ANTHONY of Toronto, Dick and his wife Cathy▲ of Oshawa and Sally and her husband Drew CHERRY of Guelph. Lovingly remembered by his granddaughter Jennifer ANTHONY of Toronto. Survived by his sister Joy HODGES of Peterborough. Suddenly, on November 10, 2005 at age 37. Beloved wife of Gordon SNELLINGS. Loving mother of Rebecca, David and Andrew. Caring step-mom to Shane and Kevin. Tracy is survived by her mother Millie and sister Andrea (Ross). She will always be remembered by the father of her children, Dan. Tracy is predeceased by her father David HOWSON. At Soldiers' Memorial Hospital, Orillia on Wednesday, December 14, 2005, in his 83rd year, formerly of Eugenia. Beloved husband of the late Pansy THOMPSON/THOMSON/TOMPSON/TOMSON. Loving▲ father of Jean (David) JARVIS of Thornhill, and Ross (Jane) of Oro. He will always be loved and remembered by his grandchildren Kristofer, Katie, Sarah and Matthew. Dear brother of Jean (Jack) BARTLEY, Marjorie▲ (Allan▲) MANLEY and sister-in-law Margaret HOWSON, all of Peterborough. Predeceased by siblings Eva, Nellie, Harold and Cecil. A successful real estate agent, Murray spent many years in Eugenia where he and Pansy raised their family. The family will receive Friends at the Fawcett Funeral Home, Flesherton on Saturday, December 17, from 11: 00 a.m. until the time of service in the chapel at 1: 00 p.m. Cremation followed by interment at Burn's Presbyterian Cemetery, Feversham.
